to add to this, i think it was the first one because i definitely remember playing it as if i didn't know what a selection box was. i built like 30 units and i inched them forward one by one in the direction of the enemy base, moving at maybe a fifth of a screen per click. i don't remember if i ever beat the first mission but if i did, i must have felt insanely elated.
so if you're wondering why rts tutorials to this day have basic shit like an explanation of a selection box, it's for literal children or people who have never touched an rts before. though i think adults would realize that there must be a better way to do it than moving one unit forward at a time even if they hadn't played an rts before

    Star Wars: Empire at War.

This was also one of the first PC games I ever played, and the first one I officially owned, at the ripe old age of eight. I still vividly remember the excitement I had when I figured out I could also play as the Empire within the campaign and skirmish matches.

I picked this over Total War: Empire at a Walmart. I'm real happy I ended up picking the Star War, because eight year old me would have have probably been grossly overwhelmed and disappointed trying to learn the Total War all by myself.

I still play it to this day.

The heyday for citybuilders and RTS games were the late 90's and early 00's, only recently there was a resurgence with the rise of indies over AAA. If you were born in 2000, you'd likely have no experience with classic RTS titles unless you played World in Conflict. More likely you played Starcraft, assfaggots, or Red Alert 3 or something.

Same here, but I wasn't born when it came out. It was around 2007 and my cousins came over one day and played it on the family computer, they left the game there. That game is the reason why I got interested in history and strategy games.

RA1 on the PS1. Console games were always very superficial to me so seeing someting like this on a console was very unprecedented. Then soon after that, games like Tiberian Sun and Age of Empires 2 were released which were a huge leap in RTS IMO, and the PS1 version of RA1 no longer seemed so special.

I think it was Red Alert 1, but it was AoE2 that I played a lot.

I remember being a teen in the 00s and having my pick of new (ish) RTS games to torrent and play over VLAN with my bros. We'd try out all kinds of different games, some were shit and some were fun. It was a kino time

The very first was Warcraft 1 on my uncle's PC, when I was 8 or so.
After that - Total Annihilation. I was so green and young and stupid I couldn't figure out how to produce new units.

I played all of the Command and Conquer games (even Renegade) in sequence after getting the First Decade box set as a kid. Before that it was Earthsiege 2, but that isn't really an RTS.

i remember being 4 and my dad sitting me down infront of a CRT monitor on the floor and showing me starcraft. i also remember watching my older brother play sega genesis games so i’m sure i technically played sonic or something as my first game. but when my dad gave me my first pc is when i have more memories because i played as much as i wanted. i don’t even know how i made it so far in those late 90’s games and pokemon when i couldn’t even read.

unironically cannot disprove this cause I cannot think of any other RTS games back then. wild, cause it's PDOX slop before PDOX even existed.

I do believe it was Warcraft 2 demo edition on some Mac shareware CD, goddamn I miss the feeling when those times were fresh. The first real RTS I ever actually owned was this edition of Starcraft, having demo'd the hell out of that as a kid too.

    Fuck I have no idea.

Warcraft, KKnD, Red Alert? Might even be something else.
I played a lot of demo discs and RTS was hot so it might have been something else even.
