Is this a misunderstood masterpiece like Majora's Mask or is it rightfully hated for being shit?
    >>
    >>4131230
It's basically, "What if BoF was a roguelike, complete with post-death progression systems?" Considering how prolific roguelikes are today it could be argued that DQ was ahead of it's time. (Similar, yet different, situation with FF13 and it's battle system which is basically an auto-battler, that genre has taken off these days, and in a sense it was also ahead of it's time.) Ultimately though BoF is about being a power fantasy, and while all dragon transformation systems have guardrails in place to prevent overuse... the guardrails in DQ feel bad because the inch you closer to a game over which is unlike any other game prior. Sure, DQ is built with the idea of unlocking things after deaths and even starting with better gear you banked, but was that the experience your average BoF player wanted at the time?

    Not really.
You tack on the fact you can't even save without consuming a resource and that is just one too many smacks to the face. For BoF fans who like roguelikes it's a welcome remix of the two. To just plain BoF fans who have no interest in roguelike gameplay... I think they'd rather play BoF1 over it and that's rough man. BoF1 definitely shows it's age.
    >>
    >>4131230
It's good. Not a masterpiece, but it's the best BoF game.
    >>4131255
"BoF fans" are a worthless demographic so taking a risk at their expense was worth it
    >>
    >>4131230
    Yes.
    >>
    >>4131230
literally nobody has ever heard of this game
    >>

    The box art is hideous
Square getting an actual artist was unirionically one of their better moves
    >>
    Awful playing blind or new.

Fun and good once it clicks

What does that have to do with a Capcom game?

Only mutts got hideous box art.
    >>
    >>4131436
People would have bought dragon quarter more if it didn't have such an ugly box art
It mattered back then before constant internet access reviews were a thing
    >>
    >>4131230
    It's fine
Luring enemies into a bomb trap is fun and the exploration is tense, but character movesets are way too boring, the pseudo-tactical system is wasted with fast bosses that you can't really position against, and while clobbering bosses in 1 turn with the dragon mode is very satisfying, the D-counter feels too oppressive to ever use it even occasionally
I wish other developers ripped it off to try to spin it in a more traditional setting
    >>
    >>4131274
Bofags liked cuck quarter. That's why it's shit. They also sharted on 6 despite having the best gameplay for non brainlets
    >>4131448
    >Plain symbol
    Bofags everyone.
    >>
    >>4131519
    Speaking of mutts.
    >>
    >>4131521
Mutts liked dragon quarter the most, wannabe brownoid. Crapcop is literally to laterally the muttlarp Japanese company. Whites and Asians with brains preferred 6. You see that now with gachas.
    >>
    >>4131522
You've posted twice and both posts are nothing but mindrotted toxicity and buzzwords. Took a wrong turn from /v/?
    >>
    >>4131521
    >Toxic
You retards started it with shitting on 6, Fagroid. My favorite game in the franshise is dead because of 4 and 5 fags. I'm so glad the leaks revealed crapcom's next breath of fire is a another gacha. Least the best mc can be get the respect he deserves
    >>
    What a dumb bait.

You killed my favorite mobile jrpg. Fuck you, burgerfag
    >>
    >>4131522
    >be me
    >played 3, was fun
    >then played 1 and 2, was fun
    >played demo of 4 but was getting too old for JRPGs by then, never bought or finished it
    >never even heard of “Dragon Quarter” outside of /vrpg/
    Simple as
    >>
    >>4131230
Yes. Simple but effective story, cool mechanics that you don't see often and don't often see combined, and the art is great. It doesn't play at all like the other BoF games and the tone is also vastly different, so it's understandable to be disappointed or not interested if you're a BoF superfan. But there's no use being bootyblasted about it now.
    >>
    >>4131230
    >misunderstood masterpiece
obviously yeah since right after DQ that dev team went to help develop dead rising and look how that got received, despite having very similar game structure and meta progression focus.
    >>
    >>4131230
It's kinda both. Once you "get it" a lot clicks, but then you remember how much the game makes you effectively grind before you get it
    >>
    >>4131230
I would be seen in a better light if it didn't carry the Breath of Fire name
    >>
    >>4131836
    >despite having very similar game structure
DR didn't have a "if you do this, you speed up the game over counter" mechanic that DQ had so that was one mistake that they corrected when going from DQ to DR
    >>
    >>4131912
DR didn't have a developer-sanctioned cheat button to win any fight in the game, either.
Game breaking powers need game breaking consequences.
    >>
    >>4131912
    >DR didn't have a "if you do this, you speed up the game over counter" mechanic
it did, it was called "rescuing survivors/killing psychos at the expense of scoop timer"
    >>
    >>4131914
    This.
It should also be noted that if one simply saves the dragon form for the bosses--which is what most people did in the other games anyway--the game was balanced that you'd have more than enough D-counter to still win the game. The game does want you to use the dragon transformation.
    >>
    >>4131230
It's the best game in the series by far, and an excellent RPG in general.
    >>
    >>4132084
    >The game does want you to use the dragon transformation.
So it wants you to speed up the game over counter.

    >>4132050
    >it did, it was called "rescuing survivors/killing psychos at the expense of scoop timer"
you can do both at the same time
    >>
    >>4131230
I bought it for 10 bucks and played for a bit but it didn't click with me. Its too different from its beloved predecessors I don't know how they couldn't have expected backlash
    >>
    >>4131230
    Did people like Lightning Returns?
    >>
    >>4132931
The people who actually played it: yes
The people who LARP as having played it: no
    >>
It's like Unlimited SaGa in that it's shit, then as you play it enough it becomes good, but if you KEEP playing it then it kinda becomes shit again because you've learned too much of how it works and can see the flaws more clearly now.
    >>
    >>4132931
Haven't played enough of it to form a full opinion, but it's better than XIII-2 so far.
    >>
    >>4132931
It plays fine but it's really fucking stupid narratively and kinda NEEDS you to care about XIII as a story to work.
    >>
Dragon Quarter remains the only good Breath of Fire game.
    >>
    >>4132931
I dropped 13 early on and skipped 13-2, but I'm actually glad I gave LR a chance. It's a solid entry.
    >>
    >>4131522
    >Crapcop
I was going to ask if you are literally 12 but based on your language that might be too high of an estimation. Do your parents know you are browsing 4chan little one?
    >>
    >>4134817
It's a solid game from start to finish and it gets better as you unlock more progression mechanics, like the Ant Colony, which is the best Faerie Village in the entire series.
    >>
You need to treat Dragon Quarter like a Roguelite and not like a true Breath of Fire game. Same with not using anything Dragon related because it speeds up the game over counter and it hitting 100% is a game over unless it happens in the final battle.
    >>
    >>4143517
Misconception. You can use the dragon form to kill every boss and even a lot of random enemies without hitting 100%. People just don't understand the game mechanics, which is consistent with their low IQ screeching.
    >>
    >>4143517
Oh no, you should absolutely use D-Dash on occasion, especially on a fresh save. Can use it to blast past tough encounters and save a bad situation in which your bait plan isn't working.

Very low D-Gauge cost and a potential get out of shit card for far less gauge cost then having to completely fix a shit pull by transforming mid battle and using dragon attacks to right what was botched.
    >>
    >>4144927
This. Those fucking Element Lizards or whatever they are in the cramped hallway area can fuck right off. Zip past them and don't bother, because you WILL pay a fuck ton more in resources than a tiny smidge of D Counter.
