do you think eb64 could be better than what we actually got?
    >>
    >>4124983
I clung to that idea pretty desperately for a long time, but in truth probably not. Let's be real, the N64 was cool and cutting edge, but it had a lot of bad and clunky games. Even ones that were well-liked at the time. I don't even blame the Nintendo programmers... there were some enormous growing pains going from 2D games to full 3D, which amounted to lots of awkwardness in 5th gen games.
    >>
    >>4124983
yes because deltarune wouldnt be shat down by toby copying mother 3's rushed storytelling
    >>
It's hard to imagine a RPG on the 64 being good when there's not much reference point there.
    >>
    >>4124983
    No.
    >>
    >>4125057
    >Let's be real, the N64 was cool and cutting edge,
It wasn't. Cartridges ruined any potential it could possibly have.
The insane hardware limitations of N64 destroyed large part of FF7.
    >>
    >>4125081
There aren't many RPGs on the system due to the nature of the genre (most developers of RPGs couldn't afford to manufacture N64 games), but there are at least examples. So it isn't like say, 2d fighters, where the rare example (MK Trilogy) is quite bad and doesn't indicate that the platform can actually do the genre.
Ogre Battle 64 looks and plays great, and is a substantial, long game. RPGs could definitely be done justice on the platform.

    >there were some enormous growing pains going from 2D games to full 3D
There were no growing pains. It's just the boomers in charge who genuinely believed that the transition from 2D to 3D is just a technological gimmick and not a drastic change of the presentation, aesthetics, gameplay and even the genre itself, in other words: a complete change of the market offer, only because there's a new console and everything MUST be 3D, no matter how fucking ugly it's going to look like.
PC games weren't affected by such retarded politics until late 90s when EA started to actively fuck things up, see King's Quest VIII and Ultima IX.
    >>
    >>4125359
PC games didn't get ruined by having 3d graphics for no reason in 2d gameplay genres (strategy, isometric rpg, etc) until the 2000s.

I hate mother 3 as it was released so yeah, there is no way it was any worse

Do you remember the FMV craze once CD-ROMs came out?
    >>
    >>4126584
Vaguely remember the tail end of it, one of my friends had Star Trek Borg, but even as a kid I could tell those weren't "real" video games.
I'm talking about how in the 2000s you'd get sequels or followups that looked like complete ass compared to the previous game. Like Civ 4 after Civ 3 and Neverwinter Nights after Baldur's Gate 2.
    >>
    >>4126584
The FMV craze made a fucking CD-ROM mandatory to play new games (while a pirated RIPs without an intro, outro and several cutscenes could be like what, 40 megabytes?), but it didn't wreck the market offer that much.
Point and click adventure games were affected the most and even then the FMV- heavy games like Phantasmagoria or Tex Murphy appeared more like a subgenre rather than a replacement for the old formula.
No such thing with 3D, it was pushed by the suits too early, it looked like shit, it clashed with the availability and prices of the hardware. 3D was much worse than 650 MB CDs filled with FMVs.

    >a drastic change of the presentation, aesthetics, gameplay and even the genre itself, in other words: a complete change
    Yeah, so growing pains.
    >>
    >>4124983
No. The platform was a failure by design.
    >Nintendo 64 cartridges range in size from 4 to 64 MB and often include built-in save functionality
    >>
    >>4124983
No. Only delusional fags think otherwise.
    >>
    >>4124983
In 2D? Maybe. In 3D? Nope. The N64 just did not have the power to create single cart good true 3D rpgs.
    >>
    >>4125359
Or developers just got bored with 16-bit sprite games and wanted to try new things?

People love to vaunt SNK/Capcom level sprite work and animation, but what they conveniently forget is how flooded the (declining) arcade scene was with their fighters and beat-em-ups.

People got bored of that stuff. Developers got bored making those games. Audiences got tired of playing them.
    >>
    >>4124983
I wish they still kept this on fucking consoles but they had to pander to nostalgia
    >>
    >>4130758
    Said the delusional fag
But at most, it had to look close to what Maiden of Darkness was gonna look like if they went back to sprites, because even Capcom at that time was already doing memorable rpgs that hit harder than Itoi's Studio Ghibli recycled plotline and aesthetic

    >Or developers just got bored with 16-bit sprite games and wanted to try new things?
Sub 80 IQ take. If you were born 2x smarter and were only a halfwit instead of complete moron, you could notice there was a lot of games which kept the technology appropriate for the existing gameplay. PSX and NDS got awesome 2D games with some occasional 3D-2D eye candy years after the supposed death of 2D presentation, POE got a rich crowdfunding campaign- that's how you can tell the argument of audience getting tired was a complete bullshit.
Developers always want to keep the stable, already developed engine as long as possible. Suits want to throw everything out of the window to follow what they imagine as "trends". See Electronic Arts and what damage it did to IPs under its control in late 90s and early 10s.
Look how they butchered the Dungeon Keeper. Twice. While Westwood somehow still managed to polish their voxel engine used in Command Conquer games to its limits.
    >>
    >>4131271
Wasn;'t there an attempt to try to recreate the FF7 OG in 2D so it could fit an N64 cartridge and it turned out it was still impossible without massive cuts of the existing content?

    >n-no u...
Go back to your discord, queer. Oh wait, you can't! Hahahaha!
    >>
    >>4133381
    >there was a lot of games which kept the technology appropriate for the existing gameplay
Games which were clowned on both by the media and by gamers who wanted new and exciting 3D experiences. I don't think you appreciate how revolutionary 3D graphics were for the time, even though with the benefit of hindsight a lot of those games are ugly and clunky.
