Let's talk about party-based dungeon crawlers!

    >What are you playing right now?
    >Any release you are looking forward to?
    >Do you prefer a fully custom party, or pre-made adventurers?

In my case I have been playing Bard's Tale Trilogy, which is pretty simply but also quite fun. Been looking forward to Mystic Land which seems cool and perhaps a slightly less austic version of Grimoire.
    >>
    >What are you playing right now?
Elminage Original, debating on going back to Wizardry 6 before or after completing it now that I’ve gotten more used to some Wiz clones.
    >Any release you are looking forward to?
Not particularly, not because nothing looks good but because there are more than enough available for me to play in a single lifetime.
    >Do you prefer a fully custom party, or pre-made adventurers?
Fully custom. Part of the fun for me and I imagine most into the genre is party building and finding new ways classes work together.
Anyone try that Stonekeep sequel(?) for the Wii? The original is another that I want to get back to before too long.
    >>
Just did a solo playthrough of Dungeon Rats, was brutal but a lot of fun trying to tip the odds in your favor while being seriously disadvantaged every fight.
    >>
recommendations for something rather fast-paced like M&M6-8? can be turn-based
    >>
    >>3994534
Monster's Den series. originally made with Flash.
    https://store.steampowered.com/curator/33419667

Book of Dread is the shortest one unless you play Endless mode.
    >>
    >>3994534
Unironically Bard's Tale Trilogy. It's pretty basic and most encounters end in less than a minute. You need some tolerance for old school trap bullshit tho.
    >>
    >>3993456
I hate the fact that I can play a game like Wizardry but if I am not dedicated enough I end up dropping. It's just time consuming.. I know what to do and all, but if I stop playing I end up having to start over. It's either you fucks wit it, or you have to stop playing and start all over again.
    >>
    >>3994678
Maybe starting with something like Wizardry isn't the best option. A less obtuse game like Might & Magic could fit you best.
    >>
    >>3994678
I had to replace a party I lost in wizardry gaiden 2 not too long ago, but it's not as bad as you think it might be in terms of "Starting over". think of it this way:
    >You still have your maps you drew and no doubt made notes on where important things are
    >any items you sold to Boltac's are there to be bought again for your new party members
    >Because you mapped stuff out and have access to better gear right away (especially if you had a Bishop at Gilgamesh's Tavern to work as a bit of a bank on top of identifying stuff), you can go grab plot coupons you need and can grind much faster to get back where you were
    >you have a chance in some cases to build up certain party members better this time around, like making mages you plan on turning into fighters and vise versa
    >>3994711
I've never played Might and Magic, outside of Dark Messiah but I know that doesn't really count. Is it dungeon crawling too?
    >>
    >>3994713
    >Is it dungeon crawling too?
Kind of? It's an important part of the experience, but it's also true that the series turns towards more of an open-world/adventure focus. That said, if Wizardry 8 is a dungeon crawler then so is M&M.
    >>
    >>3994715
I've never played Wiz 8 desu, just 1-3, 5, and Gaiden 1 and 2. I plan on going back to 4 eventually but it's really its own thing from what I can tell and I wanted more party building. That, and when I heard you can export 3 into 5 even on PS1 I was all in on that.

    >>
Don't know if this is the place to ask this but figured it's ny best shot - I played this steam demo for an indie old school style grid based sort of dungeon crawler first person game years ago , maybe between 3- 5 years back ? Could be more though. The only thing I can recall about it however , is that it had a deep dark blue UI elements , and the tutorial quest took place in this underground cave system , very descriptive text heavy and exposition heavy, and I think the story had something to do with aiding your tribe by exploring these cave systems ? I know its very vague but It's all i have to go on. I tried searching for it in my library and idk if it got delisted or if I'm just retarded but I don't see it anywhere . Or anything that fits its description. Any help is much obliged, thanks !

not that guy, but you can import 6->7->8 and they're a trilogy so that would be badass. I've only beaten 8 a few times, but started out 6 and 7 a little messing around with party comps. they seem okay. 8 is pretty sweet if you ignore the shitty graphics
    >>
    >>3996110
    >Paper Sorcerer
Is it bad? Both the premise and the aesthetics look kinda cool, it would be a shame if it's shit.
    >>3996899
You can also import the party through the Bard's Tale Trilogy. IMO one of the major adventages of full party costumization is that sense of total progression, of having "your guys" actually be the heroes across an entire series rather than a collection of pre-determined OCs.
    >>
    >>3995321

Insal is for picking the lockpick on the door Amber is behind
don't rest before you get her
    >>
    >>3999794
    Now that's what I call a res-erection!
    >>
    >>4000581
Can you actually get the scenes in the azure tower where you meet Insal again but he's had some accident/got caught in some deadly trap?
I know it's in the game files but I think there is a bug which makes that stuff not happen if you actually accept him into the party when meeting him first.
Maybe it's a wrong bit set and he re-appears if you don't invite him (and let him steal your stuff)?
    >>
    >>4000637
hmm, managed to finally google up a screenshot of that scene, so it does happen.
You havr to rescue him but not take him into party, shitty bug.
    >>
    >>3993456
I mostly picked up the adventurers you meet or resurrect, in EoB and EoB II, even tho they have worse stats. More flavor or something.
    >>
    >>4000655
That certainly is crappy, but I bet the bug doesn't appear much for people. Here is what I suspect is a common pattern:
    >start your new adventure into EOB 2
    >free insal
    >accept insal
    >lose insal
    >go down a couple floors
    >slam face-first into the learning curve
    >die
    >make a newer, better party
    >these guys KNOW
    >free insal
    >tell him to fuck off
    >see him later, strung up
    >beat EOB2
    >leave, having never experienced the insal bug

    yeah, but I
    >see wat insal does, or another 90s teenager buddy told me
    >RELOAD to not get robbed
    >get stuck in azure tower or the like
    >restart game again when I have an EoB-graduated party in like 2000
    >read the file with game strings in the meantime, noticing the Insal stuff
    >redo the progress so far, then PURPOSELY letting him rob me on the replay (while all +2 items and valueables as off-hand legal weaons are dropped to the floor)
    >finally finish the game, never finding the little bastard again
    this bugged me for years
I also never found the ancient guy.
And I kept training and training and training for days to get Amber to mage level 13
turns out the fucking engine implements maximum level limits for demihumans
    >>
    >>4000773
In my experience EOB2 did not trouble me with racial level caps. And then, EOB3 shat on my level 13s, making them 8s and 9s. I wonder if it happens to recruitables but not PCs in 2?
    >finally finish the game, never finding the little bastard again
But Jesus, I'm just glad this thread could bring light and air to this lingering shadow you've been living with. Whether you can lay the matter aside at that, or decide to run EOB again and see it through, we go with you in spirit, anon.
    >>
    >>4000872
I played it a lot of times, although not sure I got to end more than 1 time. I probably under-explored the crimson tower, too. I think I have the game so ingrained in my memory that I don't need to return to it.

I never got into Eob3 though. Between the high conventional memory requirements back when I would play it baremetal, me not having walkthrough or maps or buddies that finished it, and the ugly color palete the imported character portraits had, it didn't stick on me like 1+2, or Dungeon Master 1.
That one I compulsively replayed when I found the silly looking blonde girl with fruit or veggies in her backpack is an elf.
I dropped everything I was doing and rushed to rescue her from the magical mirror.
    >>
    >>4000773
    >And I kept training and training and training for days to get Amber to mage level 13
    >spoiler
googling tells me elves actually have Thief limited to level 12, not mage. Did I misreembered?

Also, googling I found some person't writeup that suggests EoB games implement dual-wield penalties (OMG never knew) and that is one reason to use ranger class - better thac0 actually.
Is that known to be true?
    >>
    >>4001526
Yes, this was documented in the manual I believe. But, I tested it out when deciding what class to make a few days ago, and I could not tell if there was a difference.

Also there is this asinine way to spawn hordes of Nadias and Jorils by over-using the teleporters on the first floor.
    >>
    >>4001772
It's probably better to skip grinding on these lower-level enemies, once you get into the azure tower, there's the furry weirdos that give much more exp per kill and hordes spawn on demand, you just need to press a button.

OTOH, the game is almost over and it's after you get through the worst part (beholders - well worst if you don't dodge their rays).

    >>4001526
also my post was vague and I was responding to rangers dual wielding. I couldn't draw a conclusion that rangers were any better at dual wielding. Rangers don't make much sense in this 99.99% dungeon game unless they were, though.

Playing Wizardy: Tale of the Forsaken Land. Maybe I wouldn’t call it a great game (certainly good) but it is soul overdrive with how alive the dungeons are. I'm at this weird intersection of really wanting to get into DRPGs but every time I play one I just kinda lose interest after a few hours. The last one I managed to actually complete was Touhou Artificial Dreams in Arcadia and that felt like an absolute slog. I did think Wizardry Daphne was pretty fun but it's also gachaslop so I knew eventually I'd hit the "log in do dailies log out" point and get burned out.
Anyone know any other good entry-level DRPGs for a fella like me?
    >>
    >>4030772

It depends on your aesthetic taste, but personally I think Demon Gaze is the best entry level DRPG.
    >Boss combat requires thought and reacting to things, but not overwhelmingly so
    >random battles aren't remotely oppressive, but in a few endgame places it's still "scary" to run into elites
    >Competent and simple storyline with just enough to keep you paying attention, but not much text or interference to get in the way of gameplay
    >Simple plot about overcoming your nature and becoming a better person that everyone can get behind, like a classic hero's journey
    >Dungeons are on the highest part of the spectrum for variety, but are not unfair bullshit mazes
    >Art style looks nice (aside from a few character portraits)
    >Music is really good, and you can turn off the vocals if you don't like Vocaloids
    >Kino final boss and even kinoer final boss for the sequel
    >Demon Gaze 3 any day now so you'll want to be ready
    >>
    >>4049652
    Try the following:
Grimrock/Vaporum (modern & nice looking, RT)
Lands of Lore (very accesible and noob friendly, RT)
The Dark Spire (Wizardry 1 inspired without the brutality, TB)
Dark Heart of Uukrul (puzzle heavy, TB with tactical grid)
Labyrinth of Refrain/Galleria (story heavy, TB)
Dragon Ruins & sequels (you just want to map & level up, RT autobattler)

you might just not be into dungeon crawlers
despite that I'll throw some suggestions out
another anon mentioned Demon Gaze, which I enjoyed
The same company did Undernauts, which is easier and has a neat aesthetic
Starcrawlers is a pretty cool one with some neat graphic flourishes for your attacks and a mix of randomly generated maps when you work for/against various megacorps in space as well as fixed ones as part of the main story. Its one of my favourites to shill
Might & Magic 3 as well as 4 and 5 if you want old fashioned adventurer with memorable designs and not as hard/involved as the Wizardry series
Dungeon Travelers 2 if you want full anime bullshit, but still a really fun and deep crawler
    >>

    >What are you playing right now?
Currently playing Etrian Odyssey III on Steam. I just made it to the 2nd stratum. I've played EOII:U, and EOV so far. After finishing EOV it has become one of my favorite games of all time.

    >Any release you are looking forward to?
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2731030/Algolemeth/
The programmable units gimmick where you don't directly control your party members seems interesting and novel. I hope it's good.

    >Do you prefer a fully custom party, or pre-made adventurers?
Generally I prefer a fully custom party because I like to try to make certain "builds" work like a "lockdown" team focused on status ailments and debuffs, and/or try to beat the game without a dedicated tank class/member like I did in EOV.

Hmm, my recruitables carried over from EOB1 got transferred without level change.
Gotta see what happens to the EOB2 recruitables once I have them levelled up.

Also whoa, they retouched couple of the EOB1 NPC portraits, didn't expect it. compare with >>4059532

I would expect this, since you non-importing players wouldn't ever see these portraits, iirc they aren't offered when creating.

However, EOB3 has a "feature" that is kinda cheat version of import.
If you give your characters a name of a recruitable character from EOB2 (not sure about EOB1 now) during creation, no matter what portrait you choose, upon start of the game, the portrait gets overriden to the stored portrait of that recruitable character.
So you can kinda get them, even if you lost your saves from old games.

I thought it would have 10 levels and I would be done after 20 hours but now I am at level 11 and there is no end in sight.
The core appeal is the biggest flaw for me. The game is extremely combat focused but the combat is real time with pause MMO tab targeting shit complete with threat management. Each encounter feels like a slog and there is nothing but combat with randomly generated MMOslop gear to get. The combat never really evolves into anything different, just the numbers get higher.

Also Dungeon Master may look dated as I said, but it is still not too dated to be hard to approach, unlike the older Wizardry games for example. It is fairly modern looking technically, despite looking fairly ass aesthetically.

I think they did a great job with Dungeon Master and there are higher-color versions if you want to play them, IIRC. The austere UI is actually quite nice, whatever constraints they had were worked within very well. Modern games could look at their jumbo jet control panels / character screens / etc. and learn something about leaving things out sometimes making the whole better.

    Finished Nyaz on the Switch

Its a rather blatant Wizardry clone made by a developer who has only made mobile games before.
The gimmick is that you play as cats. A lot of friction mechanics like negative stats during level up and alignment have been removed. Its closer to the Bradley formula of Wizardry where you are encouraged to change classes rather than stick it out with a single class. To that end an ideal party consists of 6 ninjas which have been leveled up high enough as both mages and priests to know all spells and have a sizable mana pool.
If nothing else it will make you appreciate the core structure of wizardry as it can carry something as uninteresting as this game for at least 12 hours. When I said a blatant wizardry clone I meant it. The game has nothing new to offer in terms of level design or mechanics. Since its supposed to be "beginner friendly" the level design isn't anything complex. The only good thing I can say about it is that certain encounters required some thought to overcome without taking too much damage but even that is completely negated once you have your murder blob ready.
Theres a post game dungeon which has enemies with innate spell resistance to negate the standard Nuke spamming but all that ends up doing is make you want to avoid encounters since the alternative is slogging it out for 5 minutes per encounter setting up buffs and debuffs to kill the hordes of enemies.
I would not recommend this to anyone. If in some dire situation you want to play this, play the Switch version even if you have to emulate it. The PC version is a mobile app running through a web browser none of the bells and whistles of the switch version.

I went in thinking it'd give me what I've been wishing the genre would do for decades (allow you to set routines for individual encounters to cut down on the menuing) and just be a normal dungeon crawler, but no, it had to be full trial and error bullshit where you HAVE to make mistakes and die before you can progress. It's stupid.

    i'm fuckin' back

Got the real basic layer of shit built. I've got a map painter tool that lets me build maps out whenever I'm bored at work or something. I've got the formation/row system in. I've got NPC dialogue functionality.

Eventually I'll sit down and start building frames for the UI/menus.

Music is going to be earthy acoustic guitar and some heavier electric shit in there. I'm taking a "music technology" class next semester that'll teach me how to use a MIDI composer, which will go a long way. I'm a big Buckethead fan, so that's the neighborhood a lot of the sound will be in.

Art's the thing furthest from my skill-base. I've been a dev for nearly a decade. I've got music down. Writing's going to be easy since I'm going for an SMT-esque mythology flavor.

Skill system is going to be like Digital Devil Saga's sutra system, but with some additions. I'm an SMT-babby through and through.

Eyeballing a "third row" system, where players/enemies can occupy a forward row that acts as a high-risk/high-reward thing. But that's way further down the road.

storage had nothing to do with it
after the disaster that was wizardry 4, wizardry 6 had 0 faith in it
it was outdated on release, using EGA graphics in 1990 while games like Might and Magic were pushing the envelope technologically
the developers basically had the choice between having more enemy sprites or more dungeon tilesets, they chose to compromise on the tilesets because they realized that anyone who was invested enough to get through the castle wouldn't mind it since wizardry used wireframe graphics before 6

Here's how this shit will work

Characters will have classes-- these are going to fill your usual roles; healing, damage, tanking.
One of my favorite aspect of dungeon crawlers is exploration. So, while exploring, the player might come upon "scriptures". Scriptures are equipped, and while equipped, gain scripture-specific exp. At fixed thresholds, players will unlock skills provided by that scripture, which can then be used to supplement their class.
Scriptures will also determine stat growth on level up.

I'm a random encounter babby, but playing through THYSIASTERY has me feelin' roaming enemies. That's a decision for later, though.

thats going to trigger a lot of people's autism
instead of them determining stat growth on level up you should have them provide stat bonus/malus based on scripture level for the character
that way you won't have permanently botched characters or trigger minmax autism of a player having to reroll his entire party once he has all scriptures for optimal stat growths

What's the point of dungeon crawlers? are they like the turn based/party based version of ARPGs? I mean in the sense that the whole point of that genre is explore and to kill monsters and get loot and levels for then to be able to explore more difficult places and kill harder monsters and get even better loot and higher levels. But also with nothing narratively interesting in between that loop. Like a good story or interesting characters

I didn't mean it in a critical way. I was just using the example of what I know that most ARPGs are, to ask if Dungeon Crawlers are kinda the same in that regard. You know, that the main selling point of them are the exploration and the grinding for the sake of power fantasy

    Even in the office building

    >>
I finished Evening Starter and its sequel Evening Survivor
They are H games heavily focused on Dungeon Crawling. The closest comparison I can think of is the Devil Summoner franchise of games minus the demon negotiation and summoning.
The first game has you taking risky jobs of fighting cultists summoning demons to pay off your debt of 200 million dollars after burning a warehouse district of the city down. The level design is pretty simple. You don't have many DRPG staples like spinners, teleporters and pitfalls. The maps range from schools, warehouses, hospitals and office buildings warped and slimed by otherworld ghost slime. You unlock the ability to buy better gear by paying off more of your debt. Instead of getting money directly from combat encounters you get items you have to sell on the black market to get money. This ranges from demonic body parts to snuff films. The game does a really good job of selling its contemporary setting instead of just being just a generic reskin. You upgrade your weapons by buying more powerful guns instead of Sword+1, most new enemies get a description and discussion among party members about their traits and at one point you get uranium as loot which you cannot sell in the black market because of obvious implications so it sits in your inventory for a while until your glownigger party member can safely hand it over to the government.
The combat remains somewhat interesting as you can't just auto attack your way through encounters and boss fights require some semblance of planning and gearing to survive.
The H content is largely optional with the best ending being the one where you pay off your debt and remain a virgin.
    >>
    >>4118912
Evening Survivor is a step down in almost all aspects. Firstly, it runs like shit. It looks better than the first one but it uses a 3d module for RPGmaker which isn't optimized at all. Second, the setting is a post apocalyptic one despite having more improved level design which removes a lot of the appeal of the original.
The H content is skippable but not optional. There is no such thing as a virgin run. The character customization is also simplified. Its a bit more harder than the original but you never really feel like you're building your party towards something interesting. The random encounters are harder than the bosses.
The first game took me around 15 hours to finish but the second one only took me 8 hours. I guess the second one was more of a cash in/rush job by the developer while the first one was a passion project.
They are weird games. As an H game none of the H content was appealing to me but it does use its adult rating to push some darker content so its not completely worthless. I would say Evening Starter is worth playing if you want to play a DRPG. Evening Survivor is only interesting if you want more of the same but slightly worse.

    1. cant set bgm volume seperate from voice volume. i often find that the music drowns out the voice acting, but not only i cant change its volume i cant even turn it off. the only reason such a basic feature is out is due localizers removing it while removing something else. i cant think of any other logical explenation
    2. costum party members are genderless. this really caught me by suprise. sure i can give them female sprite and female voice but the game never mention their gender. after playing sosc where character created characters had age and gender in addition to name im feeling like wondering- whats so extra about it. i was expecting a bit more wifey-experiance. the basement loli is cute but come on.

You just made me think about the extremely weird change from 1E (which is extremely heavily biased toward Gygax and his pecularities) to 2E. In 1E demihumans have unlimited level caps in thief, since Gygax didn't think of thieves as like political actors that would dominate the world and make it not-human-centric. So you could have your half-millennium old elf thief accompanying the party forever. But for some reason 2E rejected that and capped them harshly, including poor Amber from EoB 2.
    >>
    >>4130578
    >was wondering if somthing got removed on localization
iirc the localization for the original release was mostly a good faith attempt. Nothing like a 4kids rewrite, the overall plot and characterization is still accurate. However the wording of some parts was hard to understand and the jokes were sometimes localized but still retained the same harem anime tone. You'll likely miss a lot of the canon references and connections to the previous Experience Inc games due to how it's localized.
I do not know if Demon Gaze Extra had any of that fixed.

    >after playing sosc where character created characters had age and gender in addition to name im feeling like wondering- whats so extra about it.
The party members in Demon Gaze aren't really characters in the plot even as a collective, they're just hired adventurers that work for the canon protagonist who has a canon wife. The second game makes your party members established characters with their own social links if you want that stuff.
Also the answer to the audio critique is that the Japanese are retarded and bad with settings.

I've planned out the rough idea of what gameplay will be like. I wanted to move away from random encounters and make battles exist on the dungeon itself. Having critters wander the map and actually using the floor layout as part of the combat, make things a little more interactive.

Also speed will determine how often you take turns, rather than just turn order. Each combatant fills up a combat turn bar from 0 to 100%, giving them a turn. Adding abilities to manipulate that percentage, so a party member knocks an enemy back 50% with a skill and controls who moves when. Idea seems fun on paper at least.

I'm an artlet and a fucking retard so progress is slow. I'm trying for a mix of big wide-open environments and not just the usual sewer/dungeon tight spaces. Making the map interesting enough so it's not an eyesore to look at and creating good looking enemy sprites will take time. I'll just keep making garbage for a few months until it starts looking presentable.

    >>4135635
    >Having critters wander the map and actually using the floor layout as part of the combat
This is always a cool concept, but bear in mind that it also drastically affects the game overall. There'll naturally be less resources earned as you play and so you'll have to balance the boss fights or encounters with that in mind, you can't use the "just grind bro" excuse like other dungeon crawlers. There's also much more importance on individual encounters when they're effectively set pieces too, so you'll need to make those encounters more memorable and challenging or they'll just be cheesed while people call your game boring.
That's why I like the Experience Inc approach of having random encounters for draining resources, set encounter spawns as roadblocks in the level and encounters you intentionally summon for when the player needs to grind.

    >Also speed will determine how often you take turns, rather than just turn order.
That is a good idea, but it's also just the Digimon Story battle system. It's good because it makes the battles more dynamic, more of a back and forth with the player. You should add lanes and attacks that cover different lanes too. Lanes are cool.

    >I'm an artlet and a fucking retard so progress is slow.
I think that looks nice if it is your work. Just needs more accents and accessories to decorate and make different areas look less identical. People don't care about the dungeon looking samey, so long as the individual areas feel different enough to go through.
    >>
    >>4123849

I didn't play it much because it's a gacha but wizardry daphne uses 3d modeled characters that each play animations when they take an action in battle. Hate to say it but that gacha made a huge improvement in de-blobbing the blobber with that idea alone. Pretty expensive to make a game with that feature though
    >>
    >>4136614
Jagged Alliance 2 and 3 (much later, by some other company, but I liked it a lot, I think opinions are varied on it though).
All characters are mercs, and some have things like they won't join your team if someone they don't like is with you, or vice versa there's a little bonus for certain pairs that like each other, and I believe admiration can grow in 3, don't remember about 2. I think in both also, if people keep getting killed, they will raise their contract fee or refuse to join.
Wasteland 2 has a nice mechanic with Leadership. Companions have a chance to 'go rogue' and basically just decide for themselves what they'll do that round. This doesn't happen if you have someone that has a high enough Leadership.
Solasta has a thing where you give each character a background and tone, and things they say slightly change due to it, and there's a quest tied that comes up later related to their backgrounds, which I think is a nice way of giving a little personality.
