Do you play retro flight sims, anon?
>>12905504I do not. I did play Falcon 4.0 and Falcon BMS for a while, but I haven't invested in any of the new fancier sims. I just don't have time for that. The old ones were super comfy. I remember playing some Falcon game on the Macintosh back in the late 80s when I was just a little kid. It was super cool.
>>12905504my uncle had copied disks for F18 and F14 sims.in CGA graphix. but i never figured them. 2hard4me. didn't have the manual either.
>>12905504I do. But only to prove that i'm 3retro5you
I'm a frequent flyer of Il-2 Sturmovik, ever since I was a little oneThe later games are decent but there's something about 1946 I've stuck with after all these years. I think it's just the best in terms of bang for your buck regarding content. It's nice having the European, Pacific, and Mediterranean/desert theaters all in one go, rather than shelling out for overpriced expansions and individual planes. the modding scene is great too. It's had a bit of a resurgence, lots of nice stuff being done by the community lately, a proper VR mod came out a couple of months ago rather than the usual vorpx fuckery, and there's some other good stuff in the works, regarding dynamic lighting, modeling wake turbulence, changes in AI etc.
>>12905817I love that game, I just wish there were more options for quick battles.
>>12905504>Do you play retro flight simsSadly without a real joystick it just isn't the same.Despite the hall sticks being pretty good it's not nearly enough and not good for your thumb.
>>12905817Love that one too, never liked how the later titles are mostly just focussed on throwing you directly into high-action dogfights. Flying a bomber mission and having to do the whole thing from takeoff until you land again, including just flying towards your target in formation for an eternity, is peak comfy. Actually hitting your target after you figured out how to use the bomber's targeting device is also satisfying as fuck.
>>12905909In the past I've flown bomber careers solely from a gunners seat, it can be pretty tense just sitting through flak on the way to the target hoping the next hit doesn't tear your wing off. It seems to vary between complete milk runs, or you being the only returning plane out of nearly a whole squadron
What are the good "accessible" flight sims?
>>12905913That sounds fun, I should try that too some day.
>>12905932I only really have a WW2 frame of reference but as mentioned above, IL-2 1946 is good. It has some more complex mechanics like managing radiators and other engine management stuff but that can be toggled. It's also not keybind heavy like other, more full-fidelity sims like DCS, you can get away with just a cheap joystick and use the keyboard for the rest of your binds, if needs be, there's not a huge amount of inputs you'll be constantly making during flight anyway. (I assume you have no HOTAS/other stuff at this stage.)
>>12905932It's from 2009 so I guess I am a sinner against the holy /vr/ rule
>>12905504Red Baron sometimes.
>>12905504is someone finally aislopping the good graphsim shit?because A-10 and F/A-18 needs a unified port
>>12905504Is there any appeal besides nostalgia? What reasons would you give a newbie to try them out instead of modern ones?
>>12906253Because seriously though, have you ever tried to play one hour or DCS?
>>12906253>What reasons would you give a newbie to try them out instead of modern ones?"Newer ones" essentially constitutes DCS World, Falcon 4.0, and that's it. Greater, more accurate and realistic simulation does not instantly replace the distinctive game design of many older sims. There is justification that some older sims are just flat-out inferior, but then there are also some sims, or sim-lite games, which had actual design put forward for them that made them unique to themselves. Strike Commander is one such game, as is F-15 Strike Eagle series. F19 Stealth Fighter, F117 Stealth Fighter, F-22 Lightning 3, and Blue Max: Aces of the Great War are some games that had unique gameplay that made playing them more interesting than just simulating the plane. Strike Commander combines flying with a mercenary story and managing the money needed to keep your squadron operating. F-19 Stealth Fighter makes avoiding detection central to the mission, with different rules of engagement depending on whether you’re operating during cold war, limited war, or conventional war. Those are reasons to play them even if you have no nostalgia for them.
>>12906294>Strike Commander combines flying with a mercenary story and managing the money needed to keep your squadron operatingThe latter aspect is very overblown, you pretty much need to actively try to go broke in that game.
>>12905817I think flight sims woild be great for VR. I'm considering getting a setup for Quake but I just can't seem to bring myself to do it.
>>12906325Strike Commander also emphasizes fun over realism. The flight model is incredibly simple, and a lot of the procedures, if not most of them, are automated by default. It's basically a modern day equivalent to Wing Commander. The 80's and 90's were full of sim-lite games, which I think is preferable to the full "true sim" games, since if the only requirement is realism, it doesn't leave a lot of room for experimentation. Of course, if you go too far in the other direction, like Ace Combat, you just get a regular shoot em up, which has it's own, separate appeal.
>Do you play retro flight sims, anon?Never, even though the sim genre was probably my favorite throughout the 90s and into the early 00s. I started with F-117 and F-19, then quit entirely after several years of playing multiplayer in IL-2 and tinkering with F4: Falcon Forever.Sims aren’t really about stories or characters (inb4 Strike Commander or sci-fi sims like MechWarrior); they’re mostly about technology and complexity, at least for me. So whenever a groundbreaking sim came out, I stopped playing the older (similar) one.
>>12906402>F4: Falcon ForeverI meant Free Falcon.
>>12906402Longbow 1 and 2 had amazing campaigns. Shame they are completely broken on modern systems.
>>12906402I'm retarded, so complexity was never a main goal for me. I just liked the variety in realism of vehicle damage and flying military machines around big open spaces.
>>12906428>and flying military machines around big open spaces.weeeeee
now that Jane's FA got a reverse engineer project, i hope F-15 as USAF is nextand maybe combat sim 3
>>12906910I'd like Jane's ATF, and Longbow 1 and 2.
>inb4 not a sim
>>12906959By that logic, After Burner is a sim.
