Did Doom 2 really scare people at the time?
    >>
Not nearly as much as people destroying the quality of life with AI.

Why didn't you post this in the Doom general, that is always up

IDK but I got scared playing Duke Nukem as a kid.

The first one did a bit in some stages, I was pretty young though, maybe 12. Doom 2 not so much
    >>
    >>12904309
It didn't look like that in the 90s, it looked darker and pixelated on the monitors of the time and it did have a more mysterious and unsettling vibe

Fucking uncanny valley Doom. Looks like Doom at a glance, but then you just take in all the details and notice how off everything is.

when you're like six years old and accustomed to watching Barney and Nick Jr., mechanized demonic horrors and walls made out of flesh and screaming faces are a bit of a trip.

Doom 1 maybe, but not Doom 2. I was 10 or 11 when Doom 1 released. It was maybe scary as a first time player, not knowing what all the zones were and where they were coming from, but at some point I played it enough that it was not really impressive enough visually to be truly scary. Once you see some creepy 80's movie, the entire dynamic changes to one of "this is kind of silly in a cool sort of way".

nta, but back in like 94-95, my friends and I played some Doom over a modem, and on map15 there is a cyber demon at the bottom of the elevator from spawn, we would always drag him up into the spawn and deathmatch him with pistols and fists, respawning instantly if we did, sometimes 3 in a row eating his rockets. Bodies littered the floor after. Was so much fun.
    >>
I wouldn't be surprised if the occasional uninitiated player got jumpscarerd by a monster closet but culturally it was entirely viewed within the context of juvenile blood n guts action not horror. you didn't play doom to get a fright.

I was a kid, never had seen a first person shooter or even a first person game before which means it was mindblowingly realistic, and was raised Christian. When all you've played is stuff like Mario and Mega Man, it's scary. Especially when you've been stuck in a maze-like level for a while, and suddenly get jump scared by a random demon. But it was never intended to be scary and I assume adults didn't have any issue with it.
    >>
    >>12904456
Probably because your question is asinine and not worth engaging with

    >But it was never intended to be scary
It was intended to be a BIT scary (some of the more dark and spooky levels, some of the ambushes, etc), they were influenced by horror movies and stuff, but primarily, it's about the action and exploration.

E3M2 scares me to this day

no i thought i was really cool when i was a kiddo. but that DOOM1. i didn't know there was a DOOM 2 until i saw a pirated Final DOOM(the real DOOM 3) for PSX.

    >But it was never intended to be scary
During Doom 3's development, John Romero was asked to give the team advice in an interview. All he said was "make it scary".
    >>
My dad rented Doom 64 and played it in front of me in the middle of the night once and it scared the shit out of me even though I didn't understand shit that was happening in it.

It ended up being one of my favorite Doom games.

I played Doom 2 when I was 7 or 8. The answer is: mostly not. It was more like an action game for me.

The only "disturbing" and "creepy" parts were the ones with dark rooms and dismembered and impaled bodies. Also, that sprite with the souls screaming in the walls and that weird feeling when everyone was dead and you had to revisit empty zones with dead bodies to find a key. Also, the reversed "To win the game you must kill me, John Romero" sound.

Yeah, it wasn't scary like watching a horror movie and not being able to sleep or being jumpscared by playing Slender, but it did evoke feelings of uncanniness. Doom 1 was more horrific in that way, specially Knee-Deep in the Dead. The music also plays an important role here, you would most likely be more scared by playing PSX Doom or Doom 64 as the music is ambient and more dismal.
    >>
it's actually a very interesting topic to consider how Doom was always considered "scary" and was always pushed as being partly a horror game.

OG Doom and Doom 2 of course have some spooky or suspenseful music tracks and a few moments with darkness and monsters that are genuinely scary, but it was really with the PS1 port onwards that Doom was always trying hard to be scary.
New even spookier music was added and the darkness became almost so dark that it defined the games, notably Doom 64 and Doom 3 which are primarily known as the games where you can't see a goddamn thing.

This reminds me that there were some people in Cambodia who managed to allow being purged by the Khmer Rogue by pretending to be mentally retarded. Not retarded enough that they couldn't be useful manual labor, which is what they wanted, but just enough retarded that they were confident you weren't a dangerous intellectual and murdered you.

Of course, OP isn't under duress, he does it for the love of the game.
