I think it's fair to say that the ultimate goal for most retro gamers is to have an arcade cabinet in your home.

I really want one. I always have. I have various arcade PCB's that I run via a supergun but I don't have any cabinets. I'm hoping to finally pick one up next year.

Do you have an arcade cabinet? Even an emulated multicade could be cool if it's done right, most of them are garbage though. Feel free to post cursed 1up slop in this thread too.
    >>
No the ultimate goal is to have a job which pays me enough to afford my hobbies and to invest in retirement, that and free healthcare.

I can care less about a fucking arcade cabinet....
    >>
    >>12902532
I have about 10 of them, but only my MVS i use to swap boards with. Would love to some day get off my ass and build homes for all my homeless pcbs.

    >>12902542
Look at the fukin normie over here.
    >>
    >>12902542
I already have all of that. What I don't have is an arcade cabinet.
    >>12902551
10 cabinets??? Dude that's awesome. Would you mind posting a picture to show off your collection?
I used to watch this guy on YouTube who did these really long unedited videos of himself buying and repairing old arcade cabinets. He knocked down all of the walls in his basement and turned it into a dedicated private arcade, even had an electrician go on there and make it safe to have everything running. It was such a cool setup, I always loved watching his videos. Unfortunately he randomly stopped uploading like 5 years ago despite having tons of subscribers.

I'd like to get two cabinets. One for my PCB collection and throw a MiSTer into the other one.
    >>

A Snow Bros cab would be nice to own, since it's shockingly close to Genesis hardware. (Which itself was inspired by System 16 hardware.)

    >I think it's fair to say that the ultimate goal for most retro gamers is to have an arcade cabinet in your home.
It is, until you own one. Then once the novelty wears off (about a year for me) you realize it's still the same games you've been playing all along. And that you can get the same experience sitting in front of a monitor on a desk with your arcade stick on a small table.
    >Do you have an arcade cabinet?
    Not anymore.
    >>
    >>12902559
I would have to post multiple pics because its spread out and some are in storage, but i will try and post something if i get time later. It's nothing fancy, some lined up against a wall and would love to get a basement arcade built for everything some day. What i have consists of a gold cab MVS(was paying off a big red cab last year but owner accidentally sold it to someone else), Vigilante, Time Pilot, Time Pilot 84, Capcom Bowling, VS Super Mario Bros, a table top Quiz Master game that at one point was something Nintendo, a 2 player Daytona USA and if you want to count them, i have a Midway and Konami official multi cabs from the 2000s that are like proto 1up Arcades, except they used actual crt monitors in them. I'm in talks with a local guy to buy his Junior Pac-Man cab that is in rough shape. I would still love a candy cab just to use for board swapping.

Also theres an anon on this board with a garage full of vintage early 80s machines that blows everyone else away.

Anon... that's exactly why arcades died once people could play them at home
    >>
    >>12903370
    >That's like saying the novelty of going to the arcade will wear off because you can just emulate
It absolutely did for me. Especially in these days of the free-to-play arcade where the normies treat it like a carnival where you go in a circle, play everything once, and leave without saying a word to anyone you didn't come with. I've gotten some of the dirtiest looks from people for just standing there watching them play asking to play 2p. I've also just walked up and slammed the 2p start button without saying anything, and this almost always results in the other person walking away.

Extra note: when you're pretty good at arcade games the benefits of paying $10 to play all you want starts to look less appealing. I can play for 15-20 minutes at a time on a lot of games on one credit. If I'm there for several hours that's not going to add up to $10.
    >>
    >>12903491
That's not why arcades died. They died because they were no longer the most powerful hardware available that you could play.
    >>
    >>12903569
I still enjoy going to my local free play arcade with my friend, but i do wish more of them also had a means to just let you walk in and pay to play as they were meant to be. I'm always passing by my local one at the mall it's in and i would stop in and play a round or two of Q*Bert or Zoo Keeper if i could just pop in some quarters and not pay for a full all day pass.
    >>
I have multiple cabs, which I bought before they exploded in price. I generally would not recommend. Playing them is fun, maintaining them (and the PCBs) is not fun.
    >>
    >>12902532
I'd love to have one, especially for Armed Police Batrider. It's just that the entire affair of buying, owning and maintaining used arcade cabinets is so risky.
Buying: You have no reliable sellers. You have no idea if the cabinet has defects or issues. You don't even know how long it'll last. For all you know, no matter how pristine the quality of the cabinet is when you receive it, the thing may very well break down in a year. Then there's the shipping fees that are probably insane, especially if you're buying a cabinet from overseas.
Owning and maintaining: If parts of the cabinet break down, you either have to hope that someone knows how to fix it. Or, a safer move would be to actually learn how to fix simple issues yourself. As such, having arcade cabinet collection as a hobby should require the hobbyist in question to know how to fix a good chunk of hardware issues himself.

Wow that's what the "barcades" are like? That's so gay. I mostly see those "cheap thrills" or whatever the fucking name is an although the massive space invaders game is cool it seems everything is on a timer and it just eats your tokens and tells you to fuck off.
    >>
    >>12903467
That's not true. I have a ton of games and consoles and even several arcade boards, but I don't have an arcade cabinet (yet). I'm planning to get one in the spring but it's not a finance problem. It's a space issue.
    >>
    >>12903491
Arcades are so dead that I go to one frequently
    >>
    >>12903569
That's pretty gay. The arcade I go to is standard, put in a coin to get a credit. Also they hold tournaments and stuff all the time. Recently they started doing Virtua On tournaments which I've been wanting to take part in but it's on Wednesday nights and I'm busy at that time.

Having everything on free play sounds super unappealing because you could just credit feed every game in there. There's no more challenge to the games anymore at that point. Where's the fun in that?
    >>
    >>12903591
What's the problem with maintaining them?
For the PCB's, I wrap them in anti static bubble wrap and put them in plastic boxes on a shelf when they're not in use. That keeps them safe. Apart from keeping the dust off them and not letting them get zapped by static there's nothing else to maintain. It's very rare that a game needs a recap, I've certainly never had to do it. Sure some games might have suicide batteries that need fixed but after you rewrite the chips a single time they're fixed forever. What is it that you have to do that's so annoying?

I can understand about the cabinets though because of the CRT monitor. I have considered getting a modern LCD cabinet and converting it to JAMMA but that feels like some kind of mortal sin.
    >>
    >>12903630

The thrill of the hunt is part of the fun.

Take care of your stuff and it will last forever.
    >For all you know, no matter how pristine the quality of the cabinet is when you receive it, the thing may very well break down in a year.
    Ok? So fix it.
    >Then there's the shipping fees that are probably insane
Why would you ship an arcade cabinet? Do you want it to break?
    >especially if you're buying a cabinet from overseas.
Why would you buy from overseas? Cabinets are everywhere.

If all of that is too hard you could just get a kit for a modern cabinet and stick a MiSTer inside of it. There's nothing wrong with that.

I literally told you that it's not a financial issue, it's a space issue. That's why I'm planning to buy it in the spring, because that's when we plan to be finished with the remodeling.

    This thread is pathetic.

Why do you even have PCBs? Who are you trying to impress? Is your obsession to consume and collect so latestage and mindbreaking that you decided fucking PCBs was the way to go?

What is the point of having an arcade cabinet in your home? Did you even play at arcades growing up, or do you just want to larp as a Gen Xer? Given by your post of the Astro City, maybe you want to larp as a Japanese Gen Xer.

Don’t make assumptions about what the rest of us want, trying to justify your own poor financial decisions.

    >>12903661
I had a JP Liquid Kids PCB die in storage. No clue what's wrong with it. I have a WonderBoy that will randomly glitch out, I assume bad RAM somewhere. 1942 had very low audio, but that was fixed by a recap. My The House of the Dead cab recently developed some sort of audio interference, unsure if it is just a bad audio pot or if I need to recap the audio board. Double Dragon board that fails initial self test (I forget the name of the chip that reads bad, but it's apparently a common problem, and sometimes is actually due to an adjacent chip failing and not the chip that reads bad; I replaced that other chip, since it is easier to get a replacement, but of course the problem wasn't resolved). TMNT had scratchy audio, and I think I replaced the culprits (tantalum caps) but I don't recall if I tested it long enough to see if the problem had resolved (apparently this is a common problem).
I have some other boards that have developed problems, but those are some of them.

they are pretty cool, fun and have some great recreations of classics, it's just not the same feeling. there's just so much going on with a real machine that it sort of feels alive. you get feedback through feel that software can't really give you. being able to nudge/tilt machines in various subtle (or semi-violent) ways is way too easy in software games/emulations.
    >>
    >>12904012
That's sorta why i haven't bought one or tried to make one. I don't have a ton of experience with pinball but my favorite arcade has some tables and I do enjoy playing them. They had an Adam's Family table and that was my favorite to play. I'm just worried that a digital table won't scratch that same itch.
    >>
    >>12904038
    >That's sorta why i haven't bought one or tried to make one.
I plan to make a real full sized table in the future. during my endless browsing around for ideas and asking for advice, the power and IO board to control all of the switches and solenoids (that eat up a lot of power), also a good idea for a game that doesn't suck, will most certainly be the trickiest part for me. the ever increasing costs is making it much harder to achieve this goal. making the software, dmd graphics and audio is the easy part!

The thing that's ironic is, if you went back to the peak of either the 80s or 90s arcade booms, all any of the players cared about was being able to play the games. They craved them. And they'd play them any way they could get their hands on them.
So today you've got a guy like OP who has these thousands of games at his fingertips waiting to be played RIGHT NOW, but he does not do so, because he desires to play them the *right* way, that a person who is from the era of the Right Way would not give two shits about. They wouldn't wait for a cab, they wouldn't be making posts on this desolate wasteland of a website, they'd be playing the game right now, right this minute.

    >I think it's fair to say that the ultimate goal for most retro gamers is to have an arcade cabinet in your home.

I think that's a fantastic goal fo arcade fans. But it depends on the type of gamer you are, and the space you have a available. Some gamers are console collectors or handheld collectors, so arcades don't appeal to them.

It's funny. Arcade cabinets when they were first released were sold for a MASSIVE profit. Standard arcade cabinets were essentially just a cheap wooden cabinet that used the cheapest wood possible (like particle board or MDF), a CRT TV, cheap joysticks, the arcade hardware, and some artwork slapped on top of it. Then some company like Sega or Namco would sell the cabinet for $7000 to 10000 dollars. The company made a fortune.

Unbelievable when you think about it. That's a huge amount of profit when you think about how little actually went into the cabinet.
    >>
    >>12903569

That's not how you should calculate it. You are paying for access to these machines, their electricity costs, and their basic maintenance.

You should be thinking, "How many machines do I get access to for just $10 dollars?".

This isn't the 1980s or 1990s anymore where you brag about how much you can stretch a quarter. Those days are long over.

My ultimate goal is take care of my wife and leave the world a better place than I found it. But an arcade cabinet is pretty cool
    >>
    >>12903809
Dude it's a cabinet. The same size as a book shelf. It's not a giant sofa or a car. You HAVE the room. You just don't want to admit it. Stop thinking that you need to create a "special space" for a cabinet. That's what stops so many gamers.

I had one in my garage. Then moved it to my living room. Then moved it to another room. There's always space.

    >nah. they're mostly shit. I want pinball machines. Arcades I can emulate all day or plug jamma adapters into cheap boards i get online from cunts.

Most people aren't like you. They want the entire experience of the arcade cabinet including the physical presentation.

    >pinballs are an entirely different level of pain and fun

There is literally a pinball emulation scene too. People emulating real pinball machines and companies try really hard to shut it down.

Not sure why you don't know this.

    >as a kid I never even cared what the cabinet look like.
Because you have aspergers. That's okay but don't pretend that everyone is the same as you. We actually care what the cabinet looks like. It's part of the experience.

    >The thing that's ironic is, if you went back to the peak of either the 80s or 90s arcade booms, all any of the players cared about was being able to play the games.
Wrong and wrong. I'm from that era. The arcade was a social gathering place for the local community. It's how you many kids played with people, made friends, and met rival kids in the local community.

If not for the arcade, you would have never met your annoying rival named Gary who lived 20 minutes away in the same neighborhood. You would have never played endless back forth epic matches on Street Fighter 2 with crowds of people watching.

Nope. Judging by your post, you were probably that one overweight kid in a coat who looked annoyed and sat in the corner playing that one shmup game and gave anyone a nasty look who wanted join on Player 2 and help out.

What's the matter? Can't handle the opinion of a 49 year old dude who lived through the final years of the golden age of arcades?

I was there anon. I LIVED it. I was saw how good things were at the peak of arcades. I've played on giant ass machines that you can't even find in arcades anymore.

(Rest in Peace ... Ridge Racer Full Scale of Las Vegas Treasure Island arcade....wherever your rusted remains are. RIP)

    >>12906831
That's assuming he even went to arcades at all.

Weren't you the anon complaining that no arcades or pinball exist near you? Well this is the "official" solution that pinball companies provided. So spend the $5000 and buy one.

    *American arcades

Arcades are certainly on their last legs even in Japan, but there were many great arcade titles that came out long after arcades had died in America. There were some really cool games available to play in Japanese arcades even in the 2010s. I haven't gone to one in a few years but I used to love playing BlazBlue and others on the NESICA cabinets.

arcades are thriving in china. they are always full. reason being they are subsidized by the malls as loss leaders to generate traffic. you can get 10 minutes at a iidx machine for like 10 cents. in japan they are alive but like america they are subsidized by claw. usually its claw on the first floor and arcade on the second. arcade has people in it but its not packed. pachinko is way more popular sadly

    >>12906890
Ive seen dudes who rented an old 1 bedroom apartment. They had one or two cabinets inside their house. Just an old Tekken 3 cabinet sitting inside their living room. They bought it for 150 dollars. These machines aren't exactly expensive. You just need to have the will to actually do it and go buy one.

    >japan
Arcade companies are the ones killing arcades in Japan. They force business into "profit sharing" contracts where they agree to give 50% of the profits the arcade machine earns back to the arcade company. You must also agree to install their monitoring software and keep the machine connected to the internet at all times. If you don't agree to this contract, then the arcade companies won't sell you their new arcade cabinets (looking at you Sega, Namco, and Konami). There's no way small Japanese mom and pop arcades can stay open with those kinds of harsh conditions. So they shut down. Arcades would be thriving in Japan if it weren't for those greedy arcade companies.

the problem worldwide is that machines are simply too expensive. and if they are cheap to replicate the question becomes "why wont the user just replicate it at home"
    >>
    >>12906865

Oh it's you. Thread's over everybody, pack it up.

    >>12906921
They need to be expensive because China will copy it and build knock off designs made with inferior materials. They don't respect copyright laws or trademarks.

So they need to offset the costs knowing China will just copy it. This was an issue in the 1980s and 1990s with China building knockoff cabinets and arcade motherboards (like Street Fighter 2 "rainbow edition" ) and selling them worldwide.

I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that you believe that you can buy Japanese milk in America or the fact that you think I'm American.
    >>
    >>12907110
We get Japanese milk imported from Japan all the time. Especially if you live in Hawaii or the West Coast of the continental USA.
    >>
    >>12907160
Well I don't buy newspapers so that's the best time stamp you're going to get. How do they ship the milk across the Pacific without it going bad? There's no way it's moving by plane.
