>this killed the dreamcastdo ps2 fags really? Soulcalibur alone shits all over this garbagio
>>12901991PS2 had a notoriously bad launch and most people thought the Dreamcast was better until late 2001
>>12901991Are EA Sports Madden 2001 and NHL 2001 really that good? Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check them out!
>>12902268Looked up Smuggler's Run from among the list, it's not worth it. Chances are that both sports titles are in the same boat as well.
>>12901991NopeThis didhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCj0OqZ8ByQ
>>12901991Where's The Matrix on DVD?
Bernie Stolar had a better vision
>>12901991>soul caliber is better than unreal tournament OP is brown
>>12901991I wonder how long it took PS2 to outsell Dreamcast. I'd be shocked if it took more than a day.
>>12901991This has to be bait.
Dreamcast was underpowered it still had a better and more optimized library by 2001. It was the fact that there was no Dynamite title like metal gear solid or Final fantasy on the Dreamcast meaning that people would not buy it anymore after the final fantasy and Metal gear solid and call of duty and FIFA consoles we're all out.
>>12901991SFEx 3 and Tekken Tag mog SC1
>>12901991Maybe you (loweffortposting anon) should read printed magazine from those years to learn the truth
>>12901991No. Privacy Killed The Dreamcast. Maybe You Should Get Your Head Checked.
Dreamcast controller couldn't even handle Time Splitters.
>>12901991Soul Calibur 1 is so overrated. You can beat the AI on the hardest mode spamming 1 single button. Tekken Tag 1 and SF3EX3 shits all over it.
>>12901994I wouldn't quiiite say notoriously bad launch. There's a lack of an immediate "killer app", but there's plenty "for everyone" while IIRC, most launches before and after don't ever reach this amount of games
>>12901991Huh. I always thought Shattered Skies was a launch title.>>12902835SFEX3 can't even mog EX2+.
>>12901994>PS2 had a notoriously bad launch and most people thought the Dreamcast was better until late 2001HAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA
>>12903236The PS2’s launch lineup was kind of shitty. Frankly, I don’t think any PlayStation console has had a truly great day one launch lineup.
>>12901991You dnt know JAK
>>12903259Implying the PS2 had a bad launch is like saying ice is hot.
>>12903236PS2's launch lineup was absolutely a case of quantity over quality, almost all of the games in OP's image are completely forgettable. All the notable titles like GTA3, FFX, AC4, DMC and the like didn't come out until the following year.
>>12901991>2 mech kinos on launchwas gun griffin any good? never seen anyone talk about any of those games except the Sega Saturn titles
>>12901991You forgot the PS2's killer app
>>12903860The most hilarious thing is that Sony would then go on to literally pack in a Blu-ray movie with the PS3, and it was this one of all things. Was there really no better film in 2006?
>>12903868plus it was just the movie, without any of the bonus features the standalone bluray release had. so even if you like the movie its stupid
>>12903868Just goes to show that even back then Sony made bad decisions.
>>12901991DON'T TALK SHIT ABOUT SSX
>>12903868it's because will ferrell is a satanic freemason that sold his soul
>>12903868I fucking hate Will Farrel. The only time he ever made me laugh was when he roasted the midget boss in Elf and half of that was Dinklage's angry reaction.
>>12903868>>12903874>>12903876>>12903916>>12903941At least we got this out of that absurdity.
>>12903821The PS2’s launch was successful, but the actual lineup of games available on day one was pretty lame like >>12903857 said. There were a good amount, but most weren’t very good with no real standout must have title.
>>12903857>>12903992If we were talking about the PS1 I could agree with this, as I genuinely only remember one of the launch titles for it. The PS2 had plenty of great games on launch SSX, Smugglers Run, Armored Core 2, TimeSplitters, Midnight Club, Dynasty Warriors 2 all were great games that are still fun to play. Not to mention early 2001 was already dropping great games, you didn't need to wait long for more games to drop. There's also the whole fiasco of most people not being able to buy consoles until late 2001 simply due to the demand for them being so insanely high. The PS2 launch was genuinely one of the best console launches I can think of and to say otherwise is clown shit. For comparison the Dreamcast had Sonic Adventure, Soulcalibur, Powerstone, and a bunch of admittedly good arcade titles. Now that's not bad but when the majority of your launch titles are games most people already played in the arcade it's not really impressive. Now those 3 titles I listed are all good games but that's 3 games on launch, and not too much came out in 2000 beyond Code Veronica and a shit ton of arcade and PS1 ports not exactly a good lineup.
>>12903179Sorry fag Dreamcast is garbage, I understand this as I actually own one
>>12903860Matrix DVD came out in late 1999, 1 year before the PS2.At least try to make sense.
>>12904501The PS1 list (NA, at least):Air CombatBattle Arena ToshindenESPN Extreme GamesKileak: The DNA ImperativeNBA JAM Tournament EditionPower Serve 3D TennisThe Raiden ProjectRaymanRidge RacerStreet Fighter: The MovieTotal Eclipse TurboZero DivideAnother list with perhaps "something" for everyone, but worse than the PS2 list and a sheer lack of killer appThe big question is, is it better having a small launch is a big killer app, or is it better to have variety, even if forgettable? I think the filler app is definitively preferable as it doesn't get forgotten like this>>12903860>>12904554I seem to recall something about The Matrix DVD and the PS2I asked the clanker and yes"Yes. Sony specifically showcased The Matrix on DVD at the PlayStation Festival 2000 (February 2000) to prove the PS2's DVD player was "top notch" Time Warner also moved the Japanese DVD release up to March 17, 2000—just two days after the PS2's March 4 launch—expressly to "catch the wave of DVD enthusiasm sparked by PlayStation 2's release" The result: The Matrix DVD was the best-selling software (i.e., disc) sold at PS2 launch in Japan, with 600,000 units in its first two weeks"
>>12901991It was disappointingCheck the late 2001 PS2 releases. Gran Turismo 3, GTA, Ace Combat 4, Baldurs Gate DA, MGS2.... where the super fun actually begin
>>12904563Nigga, this is america. Fuck what happened in Japan.
>>12904501>all were great games that are still fun to play.Meh. None of them would even come close to making a list of top 20 PS2 titles. I agree with >>12904563 that a must have killer app at launch is better than a larger amount of mostly forgettable stuff.
>>12904576The PS2 was good from the day it launched in America actually.
>>12901991Armored Core 2 clears the entire Dreamcast roster, and you get the added bonus of backwards compatibility with PS1, granting you access to three more Armored Core games that also clear the entire Dreamcast roster. Hope this helps enlighten you.
>>12903097OP is an idiot but so are you for judging any fighting game based on AI/singleplayer.
>>12905364>clears No one was using this terminology back in 2000.
>>12902405No? Brown would be thinking the opposite, Soulcalibur is a more white game than unreal tournament
>>12901991Piracy Killed The Dreamcast>>12902401Bernie Stolar Killed The Sega Saturn
>>12901991The ps2 was only out a couple of months before sega announced the discontinuation of the dreamcast. They aren't even same gen consoles. The dreamcast was up against the n64 and the psx.
>>12905412Actually the PS2 launched in Japan in March of 2000 and it very quickly eclipsed the Dreamcast there.
>>12905428In other words, the PS2 launched in Japan a full year before the Dreamcast’s discontinuation and several months before Dreamcast piracy became a thing. Curious.
>>12901991Where my x squad homies at? It isn’t good, but I bought on launch
>>12904615>None of them would even come close to making a list of top 20 PS2 titles. This is kind of a retarded argument, like of course the best games for a system will come out later in the consoles life, but I understand your point of needing hyped up game for the system and there was a few I can recall people being pretty excited for namely Ridge Racer and Timesplitters, but those didn't carry the same hype that something like Mario 64 or Luigi's Mansion did. But those consoles also launched with a quarter of the games. As a more personal note I do consider Armored Core 2 to be an excellent game and easily my favorite of the launch titles, I still play it every few years. That's just me though and I know not as many people resonated with it as much as I did.
>>12906245I agree with this take too. A killer app is definitively better than a bunch of games that are gonna be forgotten once the console finally starts getting plenty of good stuff, but launches are just kinda special in a way. Big fan of odd launch titles like Feel the Magic (not retro), or the kinda title you probably would have never bought otherwise but end up liking to some level, like Pilotwing for example could be one, Bomberman R (not retro) and yadda yaddaI wasn't there at the PS2's launch, I got a GC a bit later but wasn't rich and I was still young enough so that I still couldn't follow launches at the time. Pretty sure I had the net but I wasn't religiously following game news and releases yet, so these launches just kind of happened. Anyways, my point is that it's easy to criticize it if you weren't actually there
>>12906258For me it was I Am Setsuna for the switch and Wave Race/Star wars for the gamecube. and I guess red steel for the wii
>>12904554The DVD may have been out but players were in the hands of people? The PlayStation 2 was only $50 more than the cheapest DVD player on the market, and it doubled as a game console.
