    >>
    >>12898058
    Doom 2016 maybe
    >>
well obviously the only reason 2000's gets more votes is because that's when the majority of people started playing video games. before that, PC gaming was niche, and consoles were cool but for most people it was probably more like something you did when you were bored, and there was no real gaming culture to be a part of yet.
    >>
    >>12898124
Sorry I'm drunk I meant to say Doom 3.
    >>
    Not retro
    >>

No it actually got more votes because 2000s games weren't restricted to the same rehashes of 2d games where you're limited to going left and right

if we're explicitely talking about "The best games" and the voting reasons were the sixth generation and the last year of the fifth, then I understand why it is favored. But in general terms, I'd say the 90's have better games on average thanks to arcades.

    >>12898213
I absolutely would pick 90s, especially for just the PC variety.
    >>
    >>12898312
    he's right though

Even through something as basic as sales data, 6th and 7th gen consoles were the most influential in games in terms of market variety and cultural impact

Today games as a whole are bleeding out fast because conventional gaming has been priced out from the younger generation. It's more common to find Zoomers into other media rather than games, and gen Alpha won't have childhood memories to hold onto by the time they grow up if this memory shortage keeps up for much longer.
    >>
    >>12898213
I wouldn't choose the 90's because it would mean giving up everything I've ever earned
    >>
I feel like the 90s are nore consistent. 90s PC games plus almost all of 4th and 5th Gen would provide unlimited amounts of games to play for the rest of my my life. I like 6th Gen but PC gaming was declining in the second half of the decade and 7th Gen has a lot of trash.
    >>
    >>12898902
This. Only the first half of the 2000s is worth a damn with only the psp and DS and late ps2 stuff providing anything of substance.
    >>
    >>12898180
Yeah instead we got a bunch of 3D rehashes trying to rip each other off.
    >>
even though i grew up with the ps1, i must admit that stuff like mgs3, burnout 3 and san andreas mog the vast majority of the previous gen. low poly is heckin soulful, but gen 6 was the peak gameplay wise. you are free to prove me wrong
also, pokemon gen 3 hoenn mogs gen 1 and 2

The point is that Doom intentionally looks very old and pixelated compared to a 2000s 3D action game like Assassin's Creed. Also most young people wouldnt be able to even recognize that zombie soldier in the pic as being from Doom, it's just some flat, pixelated, blurry 2D thing compared to Assassin's Creed which is instantly recognizable as it features the main character.

If they used OoT and CoD2, nobody would even recognize the latter as CoD2 because it would look so generic while OoT would be instantly recognizable and would thus win the poll.
    >>
    >>12898991
the average moment in cod2 will be infinitely more entertaining than anything in oot.
    >>
    >>12898029
Time will do that. The 90s are far enough in the rearview mirror that current 20-somethings never lived it.

To make a comparison, a very good argument could be made that the 70s was the peak decade for cinema. But if you took a poll there's zero chance it would win.

Take solace in that we lived through the best era of gaming even though it dies with us.
    >>
    >>12898230
I want to go back too, but I wouldn't pick 90s games over the 00s.
    >>
    >>12899646
there were plenty of great PC games that anon clearly doesn't know about. if all you had to live with was console games, maybe i could agree. i've been a pc gamer since 91, i could easily survive. i still play many of those games today.
    >>
    >>12898029
This a weird cut off. The golden age was closer to 95 to 05.
    >>
    >>12898029
Its not really a loss. The aughts were the first decade that gaming grew to encompass casuals, the people who grew up with Halo and Asscreed. Of course there are going to be more votes, there were more people involved. Doesn't mean the aughts are actually better - it was a much better hobby when there were no casuals, no browns and no normies in it.
    >>
Good, I want people to finally stop inflating retro prices. Go inflate your gtas and halos
    >>
    >>12899646
"Going back" is a different question than what decade was the best for games. The 2000s was amazing for actually having access to all the games from the 90s. The PS2 was a goldmine for arcade compilations, for example.
    >>
    >>12899669

    >>
    >>12899942
    >better versions of all that
Let's go through the list shall we? Or, at least some of the list
    >Doom
All others after this were a down-grade. Different, enjoyable, but the original is still best.

    >Wing Commander
The only better ones were the ones from the 90's that released after the first one. Other than that, all others are dogshit.

    >Sam and Max
Nice efforts, but mostly just walking simulators with occasional puzzles.

    >Master of Orion
Again, all imitators are absolute dogshit.

    >Diablo
Diablo 2 is better, I will give you that one.

    >Warcraft 2
    Warcraft 3 is also better.

    >Quake
    Still the best, unquestionably.

    >X-COM UFO DEFENSE
I don't even think it needs to be said how much better the original is.

    >Duke Nukem 3D
I think we're all aware of the travesty that was Duke Nukem after DN3D released. A few consoles games were fun on the PS1 and N64, but in the 2000's and beyond, he became an absolute joke.

    >X-Wing / TIE Fighter
Still GOAT Star Wars space action games.

    >Daggerfall
Depends on what you prefer in an RPG; believability and immersion and actual roleplaying? Daggerfall obviously beats Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. You can simply do more.

    >Mechwarrior 2
Mechwarrior 4 is the peak, I'll give you that one.

    >Age of Empires
Age of Empires 2 was the peak, and guess what...1999 release date.

    >Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Rainbow Six 1 and Rogue Spear have yet to be topped. Rainbow Six 3 got close, but the ragdoll and suspect AI killed it as a successor.

    >Aliens vs Predator
People like AVP2 for the multiplayer mainly, and its singleplayer is okay...For the marines. AVP 1999 had much better balance between the Marine, Alien, and Predator campaigns and was a more well-rounded experience.

    >Everquest
The only MMO I played as an adult, and now have nostalgia for only a few years later.

    >Starcraft
Think it's obvious the original is king. Starcraft is decent, but pales in comparison in terms of execution and replayability.

    >Tomb Raider
    No-brainer.

Yeah, nah. The gameplay is very shallow and the choppy 5 fps animations are objectively bad. More modern games like Crysis are objectively better. The only thing Quake did better is not being a storyshit game, but MW2 and MW3 Spec Ops missions, the pinnacle of all FPS games, aren't story driven either.

    >>
    >>12900568
While the stereotypes of PC gaming in America weren't quite as bad as Japan, normies absolutely did look down on PC gaming for the most part. Computer gaming in the 80s and 90s was seen as something for smelly, autistic nerds with caustic personalities or perverts obsessed with playing Western erotic games or pirated hentai games. The 2000s made it even worse with MMOs and flashslop. It doesn't help that even today on /vr/ and /v/ PC gamers tend to be the most bitter and obnoxious demographic in gaming, with a massive superiority complex and chip on their shoulder.

Can you buy a boat in Skyrim? Can you climb in Skyrim, I mean actively climb over things as a dedicated action? Can you use banks? Own a wagon to haul your loot around?

There's simply way more investment into actually roleplaying in Daggerfall it's not even funny.

all of my friends that i grew up with had consoles, played video games every once in awhile, but were far more interested in getting laid during their teenage years, and most of them eventually got married and had kids. None of them play video games anymore or treat it seriously outside of what they can blow an hour on in between being an adult. unlike me, because i never grew up and i've been doing the same thing for 35+ years. sad to most normies maybe, but i know what i like and i dont have or care to spend my time on anything else outside of work to survive and fund my addiction.
    >>
    >>12898029
I think it needs to be understood that the 2000's was when video games ballooned in popularity.
80's and 90's, it was mostly seen as kids and nerd stuff, and while there was an increase of popularity towards the late 90's, it still pales in comparison. And quite a lot of people that grew up with games back then that aren't nerds have moved on. Where as even normies that grew up with games in the 2000's are still playing games well into adulthood today.

And I’ll bet more than half of the people who answered le silly poll weren’t even alive to have played games during most of the 90s. Add to that, the early 2000s are doing a lot of the heavy lifting for that decade, and early 2000s was basically 90s fumes.
