online gaming still had n-word functionality

We had great games and every new title got progressively better looking and added brand new features no games had prior, and so did new consoles. Communities were real and didn't ban you if you offended some precious little snowflake, and different consoles actually had different hardware and strengths to them instead of just being an umpteenth PC box. Portable gaming was huge and also benefited from all the above. Online play was optional and everything came with great single player content, console games worked out of the box instead of requiring to be always-on and downloading 100GB of patches every month.
The great studios from the 90s were mostly still alive and churning out new titles, and most great game series was still getting revolutionary new titles.

It was all around better. Nowadays, the last time a game impressed me graphically was 15 years ago, and every decent new title in a big series is some kind of fanmade expy that sometimes gets lucky enough that the IP holder allows them to name it a new entry.

Nothing like this AI slop for sure.

People really are going to use AI with VR headsets to completely simulate bygone eras because the present sucks ass.

For single player games it's not a lot different to now really, other than graphics I guess. You're still sitting in front of a screen with a controller or kb+m.

It was exciting at the beginning, we were finally seeing the future of gaming beginning with the Dreamcast. But after the Dreamcast died because of piracy, things went downhill from there. Microsoft entering the console wars was quite unexpected and unwelcomed. PS2 was overrated as fuck. As for Gamecube, what was Nintendo thinking not including a DVD player? 6th gen was a disasterous wave of bullshit. But after the Dreamcast, I ended up owning a PS2 because I knew all the games I would want to play would end up on that console. I ended up selling my PS2 for a Gamecube and Xbox instead, despite my hatred for Microsoft, I wanted custom soundtracks for my games. I also wanted to play the RE Remake on Gamecube. Best decision I've ever made and it was the first time I played Splinter Cell on Xbox and became a huge fan of that game series.

Something vaguely creepy about seeing an AI recreation of things you lived through, presenting itself as the real thing.

    >Something vaguely creepy about seeing an AI recreation of things you lived through, presenting itself as the real thing.
because it's a cruel pastiche. it's like a museum diorama made from someone far in the future that only had written descriptions of the highlights of the time and they decided to shove everything into one setting. look, the xbox! look, the PS2! look CRTs! look, half-eaten domino's pizza! look pacsun! all shoved and blended together that to people who actually lived through it looks like an uncanny valley slurry of shit. also because it's replicating consumer-grade HD digital video which obviously didn't exist then (or at the very least wasn't widely available)

    >Dreamcast died because of piracy
Incorrect, the reason the Dreamcast died was way way more complex and had a lot to do with Microsoft. As it's well know MS really wanted to collab with Sega and got shafted in large part due to Bill Gates smelling like rotten cheese on account of his obsessive milk drinking and lack of hygiene.

Anyways so Gates retaliated to make sure the Dreamcast would get as little market share as possible and actually paid for every single MS employee to buy a PS2 on launch and once the Xbox launched they activated a kill switch for SegaNet that they in part helped develop although not directly. This caused massive issues and any Dreamcast owner who used it late in it's life can confirm the servers were iffy at best. This being Sega's main source of income from the DC at this point crippled them and they had to just cut it before it got worse and this action probably saved the company from bankruptcy.

The Xbox would then release and steal practically all but the most dedicated Casters (this is what Dreamcast fans called themselves). To reiterate piracy had nothing to do with the DCs death because the only money Sega ever made was through SegaNet, something unavailable to pirates.

You're right, I'm not a fan of JRPG. And yes the Gamecube and Xbox were a perfect combo.

    >>12903182
False. Piracy killed the Dreamcast, by driving away third party support and causing Sega to lose money since Sega was banking on Software sales to keep them afloat. They couldn't afford piracy and was left with no choice but to shut down production of the Sega Dreamcast.

    >>12903279
    Thank you.

    >>12897970
AI and you still had to slip the black guy in.
    >>
    >>12903635
Cope. Third party devs largely abandoned the N64 in favor of PlayStation during the fifth gen and Nintendo still managed to get by on the strength of their first party titles. What’s Sega’s excuse?
    >>
    >>12903662
Third Parties didn't abandoned the N64, it had a pretty healthy third party support due to lack of piracy and moderate success. Whereas Sega was losing support because of widespread piracy.

Sega’s own first party games should’ve been enough to keep the Dreamcast going, but let’s face it, they just weren’t very good outside of shallow arcade stuff.

I’m going to assume he meant 3D gaming. I will give the Dreamcast credit for being the console that fully bridged the gap between arcade and home console 3D graphics.

Nintendo had absolutely zero chance of getting Final Fantasy back, zero. The PlayStation brand was way too dominant in Japan and Europe. Why the fuck would Square opt for Nintendo when Sony had an install base of 100 million potential Final Fantasy customers?
