I had a ton of hype for this but I can't help but feel let down now that I've played it. Everything just feels cheap and junky. Is it something you just had to be there at the time or what?

for a console that lasted 3 years, it has a pretty good library
    >>
    >>12897795
    Fair.

I never minded this though. It was cool seeing demakes of popular console titles, though that's just me, instead of thinking "This is worse..." I think "Hey, more of that IP I enjoy!" and it's all good, as long as it plays well.

I'd say my favorite example is Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace, I always wanted a sequel to Spider-Man: Enter Electro, and I never got it... because I was looking at the wrong place, on the PS1, but the sequel came out on GBA.

GBA rocked and felt like a portable 2.5D PS1.

    >>12897774
It's essentially just a portable SNES with a few ok other games on the side. But even the ports are pretty bad imo, with a couple just being ok (Yoshi's Island, Aladdin).
A few of the weirder Japanese games (Wario Ware, Rhythm Heaven) are really good on it.
Pokemon shat the bed in Gen 3 so it's not really worth it for that either.
Castlevania games are pretty decent on it, as well as Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.
Plenty of those Megaman games too if that's your thing.

I think it's heavily glazed by nostalgia, I have a lot more fondness for the GB and GBC personally, but I can see why some people hold the GBA highest. It's a good stopgap between the GBC and DS tbhdesu.
These days I think the only reason to emulate it would be for some of the above games, and maybe a few of the FF ports as they have marginally better localisation. But you have better on the SNES and GB/GBC imo. There are a few decent romhacks for the pokemon games, but eh.
    >>
    >>12897774
At the time for portables, I was into the NeoGeo Pocket Color, as it paired well with the Dreamcast. However, I did quit video games when the Dreamcast was to be phased out. So I sort of got back in due to a cheap Gamecube bundle that included a Gameboy Player, and all I would play were whatever I could get for $5USD or less to ease my addiction. For cheap games, I just kept finding amazing game after amazing game which got me back into video games mid-generation of the 360, so I have the GBA titles played on the Gamecube to thank for that. While portable games may have a tendency to be compromised or limited ports, some end out being the best versions like Double Dragon Advance. The runtime for some of the games can last quite a while too with strategy and RPGs which can challenge the player. I do wish the sound was more robust, but it is just a great continuation of the SNES style of games I loved.
    >>
    >>12897774
It was only ever good as a portable SNES (with worse resolution, colors and sound).
I've played it a lot because I've never had a SNES and because you could use it anywhere, but nowadays playing actual 16 bit SNES or Genesis games is the much better alternative.

The people who hype it up are those who refuse to play old games (that they didn't play on release) and grew up with the GBA (so to them its the only acceptable way to play 16 bit games).

Actual 16 bit home console games and 2d playstation games are much better than anything on the GBA.

    >>12901280
    >Castlevania games are pretty decent on it, as well as Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.

Imo only Advance Wars 1&2 and Warioland 4. The Metroid games on the GBA are worse than Super Metroid, the Castlevania games worse than Symphony of the Night and the Fire Emblem games are worse than the SNES ones.
At best they are tolerable if you want more of the same series.
    >>
    >>12897774
I don't really like 2d platformers and stuff, but the better 2d games that I played were on pc/consoles. Fallout 2, Jurassic Park, abes exodus, etc. the gameboy/ds games always felt kneecapped by Nintendo's scope. I wasn't impressed by a handheld until the psp

    >Actual 16 bit home console games and 2d playstation games are much better than anything on the GBA.
This is a retarded take. The games on the GBA are made by the same devs, except with 10 years of experience and on better hardware. Of course the GBA has better 2d games than gen iv.
    >>12901280
    Play some action games, pussy
    >>
    >>12897774
I loved it and still do. One of the benefits of the GBA was that, as another poster alluded to, it allowed devs to make the minds of games which would not have been seen as console-worthy at the time, as in the majority of 2D games. For instance, if not for the GBA, the "Metroidvania" style Castlevania and Metroid games would have probably died out even sooner, as would have other 2D platformers, like Wario Land 4 and the Zero series would not have existed. Nowadays with the plethora of indie developers churning out 2D games, it doesn't seem as big of a deal, but back then it was indeed a lot more meaningful. Even now I think the lack of dedicated handheld consoles with weaker hardware and the corresponding acceptance of smaller, relatively dated games has left a hole in the gaming landscape. At best we get stuff like Metroid Dread and Echoes of Wisdom/LA remake, but gone are the days when we would see Nintendo (or one of their "2nd party" studios) put out a new, fully 2D Zelda game with relatively minimal padding that doesn't feel like it's trying to justify itself as a proper console release.

    >It's essentially just a portable SNES
Honestly it was so much more, devs were mostly lazy. We could've had more rudimentary 3D games if people tried.
    >>
    >>12902171
The rudimentary 3D games on it weren't very good though. Better than the late SNES with extra chip copes but still pretty bad.
    >>
    >>12902216
Big Mutha Truckers was an impressive effort IMO. They could've made a completely different game for GBA, but instead they downscaled the DS version.
    >>
It had several problematic trends working against it that squeezed the number of quality original titles and exacerbated the mid tier shovelware releases. definitely a disappointment for what was a suped up 4.5 gen system under the hood.
the nucleus of quality original games is still enough to make it worthwhile I think.

By that logic games nowadays should be better than ever because those devs have even more experience and playing old games would be pointless. And every new game in a series would be better than those before it.

But things don't work like that, do they?
And that supposedly better hardware has an extremely low resolution screen, an atrocious soundchip and thanks to the lack of a backlight in the first version every GBA game is extremely bright and oversaturated. And besides that it's also very clear that those games were low effort projects that recycled as many ideas as possible from the home console games they were based on. While also being more casualized and easier.

    Lmfao no. Holy shit no.
    >>
    >>12897774
It's really good if you like action games. I mainly got it to play Mega Man Zero games, but there's also tons of other good action games too, like Astro Boy, Double Dragon Advance, Dragon Ball Advance and Gunstar Super Heroes. I also used it to play Mega Man Battle Network games and JRPGs like the Fire Emblem and Golden Sun games.
Despite its sound card limitations, the GBA had a richer library of exclusives than any Nintendo handheld before or since.

    Limitations are good.

    >But things don't work like that, do they?
And that supposedly better hardware has an extremely low resolution screen,
This is a talking point that only affects modern emulation. No one in 2003 ever talked like that. The graphics are maximally good 2D.
    >an atrocious soundchip
It's a stronger snes but with no dedicated soundchip, meaning the cpu has to share the load with everything else. in practice this means a lot of cpu-heavy action games use a soundtrack that is almost 8 bit sounding. Not a problem
    >and thanks to the lack of a backlight in the first version every GBA game is extremely bright and oversaturated.
every game i played looks beautiful on ds lite
    >And besides that it's also very clear that those games were low effort projects that recycled as many ideas as possible from the home console games they were based on. While also being more casualized and easier.
kek yeah right. nice sweeping generalization about thousands of games you never played. maybe its true for like two of them.

    >No one in 2003 ever talked like that. The graphics are maximally good 2D.

No one in 2003 considered the GBA to have good graphics. In that time, good graphics were those of FFX or the Resident Evil remake. People were disappointed that the GBA was still a 2D console. Almost no one wanted maximally good 2D in 2003. Journalists criticized ports for having worse graphics than the originals (and the GBA for having too many ports instead of original games).

There was some point around that time when I got a gameboy player and was initially happy to play GBA games on a tv. That happyness quickly faded away as most games looked terrible on a big screen. I still played lots of GBA games because I could play it at any time and didn't have my own tv and because I wanted more Metroid, more Zelda, more platformers and was still somewhat enthralled by the Pokemon mania.

    But OP asked:
    >Is it something you just had to be there at the time or what?

And the answer is yes, you just had to be there at that time. Playing most GBA games nowadays is pointless when you could just as well dive into the vast library of SNES games if you want maximally good 2D, or play 3D games on the go if portability is the important thing to you.

    >>12897774
the gba has a small selection of marquee original titles that are decent and worth playing.
    >>
    >>12903357
the snes has terrible hardware for action games compared to a gba. it can't do too many sprites and it has input lag in the controller ports. the only advantage it has is a separate sound chip. you are a shitter who just wants to nod your head along to le ebic music, the gba is for playing actual skill based games

    >(with worse resolution, colors and sound).
I'd argue that color wise it can be as good as the SNES or even better, except that the console came out with no backlight so games adopted a garish extremely light palette to make up for that.

There is no excuse for the horrible sound hardware though.
