Why was Twilight Princess so weird?
    >>
    mogged by majora's mask

They were so stunned and rattled after developing such a masterpiece as Wind Waker and getting such a hostile reception, they completely forgot how to develop video games. Twilight Princess is the result.

Fans complained that WW was too childish, so Nintendo backpedalled and attempted to appeal to the N64 duology fans by making it edgy.
Kinda reminds me of the unholy meta loop Sonic games would get stuck in a only few years later.
    >>
    >>12896906
It was a backhanded approach, an insincere attempt at being edgy and it shows by the fact it had zero staying power and basically the entire audience shifted over to saying sotc was how zelda should be made. To nintendo silly scary faces and white eyes are what spooks gamers.

Nailed it. Nintendo made the mistake of listening to the whiney fanbase.

The fanbase did not ask for "nauseating grotesquerie". They were crying out, "We don't yet know that Dark Souls will exist, but we want a somewhat easier version of it that has Link in it!" and Nintendo mulled that over and farted out yet another campy menagerie of hideous caricatures, but with some extra darkness tacked on this time.

    >>12896701
It had to be, because Wind Waker was so homosexual.
    >>
They tried too hard to be deep and serious as a counter reaction to Wind Waker.
    >>
It wasn't, this is the only cutscene where the game is like that.

I laughed my ass off because it was trying so hard to be dark/edgy and fell flat on its face. What makes it even more embarrassing is that majora actually accomplished what tp was trying to do with vastly inferior tech.

because windwaker was really cartoony and that pissed a ton of ppl off

The ugly truth about TP is that it was a game the Zelda team didn't really want to make. They were gearing up to make a sequel to TWW, but they got word that TWW underperformed, especially in NA, and they were so clueless and out of touch they were genuinely taken aback and had to inquire NoA as to why this might have happened. NoA pretty much told them how it was, that NA players were expecting something darker and more mature, basically OoT on steroids, and TWW was the antithesis of that. So they ended up scrapping whatever they were doing for TWW2 (though they kept the engine for the most part) and pivoting toward what would develop into TP, but they hit several snags along the way to the point that development stalled, at which point fucking Miyamoto had to come in and "upend the tea table" and bring enough focus to the project to get it across the finish line.

But playing the game, you can tell there is a disconnect. There are scenarios, characters, and plotlines that are intricately set up, only to barely matter and instead fall back into familiar formulas with hardly any narrative purpose intact. This is especially obvious past the halfway point, where shit just kinda happens with barely any explanation, and you're left to fill in the blanks as to the how or why.

Unleashed is a massive trace of Toilet Paper, to be fair.

    >>12896701
Because mutts hated WW, so they made it muh dark and edgy.

It's on part with ocarina of time in that regard

    You make no sense

    >About the scene where Zant snaps his neck, what was that supposed to represent?
    >Aonuma: I don’t know! (laughs) We had a cutscene director, I don’t know what he had in mind for the story, but he made amazing cinematics!
The cutscene director was literally making random crap that looked cool, no overall writing crew. It’s why the story just seems to be all over the place.

Zelda fans trying to pretend they're hardcore fantasy was some of the most adorable shit I think I've ever seen.

    >>12904185
    Hey, not true.
Japan hated WW too, and Nintendo just went "um um um um actually people in Japan just don't want to play video games anymore, we're not owned we're not owned!"

People thought they would use the better graphics of the Gamecube to keep pushing in that direction with less limitations
    >>
    >>12905162
That spaceworld demo that Anouma hated didn't help matters, either. People expected the next Zelda to be more like Ocarina of Time instead of a cutesy cartoon.
    >>
    >>12905153
Japan wasn’t that interested in the N64 either, to be fair. The console itself and OoT were overwhelmingly more popular in North America.
    >>
    >>12905175
Yeah, this was a huge miscalculation on Nintendo’s part.
    >>
    >>12905830
They wanted to try something new. Nintendo shitposting went through a weird stage back then of bouncing between
    >All Nintendo ever does is make the same thing over and over again
    and
    >Nintendo changed what was working perfectly, it's shit and proof that they never knew what they were doing!
    >>
    >>12905879
Kek that’s exactly what happened when they made two similar open world Zelda games in a row. People started saying they missed the classic overworld and dungeon structure, hence the OoT remake.
