How popular was the Saturn in Japan?
>>
>>12896474
distant 2nd, barely edging out the n64. though it won a year or two
>>
The Saturn was relevant from 94 to 98 and the N64 from 96 to 2000.
Also they had completely different target audiances, the N64 in Japan was almost exclusively targetted to pre-teens and young teens (who before the N64 were still mostly playing on SNES even as the PSX and Saturn came out); while the Saturn was targetted to older teens, adults, arcade goers and hardcore gamers ; before settling for otakus later in its life.

So different timelines, different audiances; so saying that "one *won* vs the other" is stupid and irrelevant. It's like applying modern logics in which all consoles come out at the same time and target the same audiances.

Holy SHATJEETPT

It never was the sales behemoth that many people like to paint it as, it always did barely above the PS1 but when FFVII came out it pretty much died off.
>>
>>12896474
It did alright. It basically ended up filling the void in the market left by the PC Engine not having a strong followup console

Nope it's the contrary
>>
>>12896474
Sega fans still delusional and coping this hard decades later
>>
>>12896474
PSX was the normie console and beat the piss out of Saturn. This is a fact.

The difference is Saturn still has some popularity today. PSX is recycle bin trash.
>>
>>12896474
People brought it for Virtua Fighter and that’s about it
>>
>>12896474
Quite popular:
There are 153 SEGA Saturn games released in the year 1995.
There are 362 SEGA Saturn games released in the year 1996.
There are 392 SEGA Saturn games released in the year 1997.
There are 224 SEGA Saturn games released in the year 1998.

Too bad it is mostly just shmups, shitty hentai, shitty puzzle games, and mahjong with titties.

Saturn in Japan is very overrated.
>>
>>12896474
It was a Virtua Fighter machine. Nothing else sold even close, the highest seller being I think Sega Rally at 600k vs VF2s 1.6M (and that's not counting VF, VF Remix, and Fighters Megamix aka Saturn VF3).

>>12896481
Only really relevant from 95 to 97. For 1994 it was only out for a month, and by 1998 they already stopped production and relied on old stock, with the exception of the Skeleton consoles, and any games done in 1998 were rushed to get done as the console was axed (Touring Car, House of the Dead).

>>12896476
>though it won a year or two
It outsold the N64 for maybe 1 month by like a thousand units. N64 was selling better every other time.

>>12896495
Wasn't it also head to head with the PS1 in the US as well, up to 1996, and then flatlined from 1997 onwards?

Saturn is only popular in western countries nowadays, in Japan it is equally recycle bin trash. You can get JP consoles and games for a fraction of the price of the US versions.

Japanese Saturn stuff is worth more than Japanese N64 stuff. The consoles AND the games are more expensive. You can pick up even headline N64 titles for $10-20 (expansion pack bundles aside), with many for less than that. I bought a boxed, complete copy of Mario Tennis recently for 1 yen because I bid on it whilst drunk and nobody else bothered.

The only thing that has any value is the 64DD.

NTA but I believe when he said the saturn won a year or two, he meant against the Playstation, not the N64. The PS1 didn't start becoming a juggernaut in japan until 1996 and Virtua Fighter was a big deal. I don't know the exact sales numbers, but it would not surprise me in the slightest if the Saturn outsold the PS1 in Japan before Resident Evil came out.

Saturn was effectively dead in North America before the N64 even came out (Virtua Fighter 2 was the last game to bump sales in 1996), PlayStation sold more consoles on launch day than all of the early months Saturn had, Saturn only beat 3DO about 1.5 Million more consoles in NA.

The first data point for the PS1 on that chart is in January of 97. That's not very helpful for this discussion.

It was certainly popular enough with developers.
The Saturn had an active lifespan of 2207 days.
The are 1028 Japanese Sega Saturn games.

That comes out to a new game coming out just a little less than every other day.

What are you talking about ?

Watch more carefully

You need to learn to read charts Anon

I come from a different dimension where Sony wasn't able to secure Dragon Quest VII exclusivity and Saturn got an enhanced port
>>
Not very much and Bernie Stolar saw that
>>
>>12901091
Nah, Saturn was very popular in Japan. Bernie just killed the Saturn in the U.S. because he's a clueless cuck.

DQ7 does look like a Saturn game so that checks out
