It mogs Half Life into oblivion. The level design is the most creative and ambitious I've ever seen in a shooter.
>>
yeah that era of "fight like 6 enemies for 2 minutes then spend an hour running in circles around the map looking for colored keys and doors" shooters was garbage

halo genuinely saved shooters
>>
>>12894857
no. quake is 100x more polished and pleasant to play encounter to encounter. jedi forces does some interesting things but it doesn't mog quake.
>>
>>12894882
I thought the same when I was younger. Id drop a game if it took me more than 15 minutes to find out what to do next. The older I get, the more I love key hunting.
>>
>mogs Doom
>>
yeah ok

how many people won a ferrari playing this game
>>

for me, it's the concussion rifle

It’s funny how this game is largely forgotten despite literally being GotY’97.

>I suck at video games - the post
Please hold my hand and show me where the next item is! Also give me achievements! I need achievements or I can't play, there's no point. Won't someone please tell me I did good? Can't you mark the location on my automap that never closes and can't we have a list of all active quests that takes up 1/3 of the screen? K thnx bi

Never got a console port, so peasants naturally despise it.

Id assume they just haven't heard of it first, you really are the Vegans of gaming.
>>
>dude what if Kyle turned evil lmao

>largely forgotten
It’s been a long time. The game is almost 30 years old, so there have been multiple generations of gamers since. I’m not surprised. People had already forgotten about it in the early 2000s because the pace of how much games were improving was so fast. Nevertheless, it’s a classic and a great game. I was one of those kids obsessed with it because it was one of the standards for a few years there.
>>

>you really are the Vegans of gaming.
But we're talking about PC, not Nintendo? I'm confused.
>>
>>12897057
The scale of the levels in it are still impressive even now.
>>
>>12894857
quake still had better DM tho
but yea, of course the dark forces singleplayer campaign absolutely mogs everything else in the genre. no contest. and i mean that literally, as this was very much the era of "story in vidya is like story in a porno". dark forces has an actual story and even choices and narrative and cutscenes and dialogue. it was way far ahead in that regard
>>
>>12897074
>as this was very much the era of "story in vidya is like story in a porno".
That was a response Carmack had for why id games are so simple, it wasn't an "era". There was plenty of story in RPG's and adventure games. Adventure games were almost nothing but story.
>>

i lik mara jade desu so the b8 and switch didnt bother me too much
doesnt she go on to bang luke in the comics?
>>
>>12897076
it absolutely was that entire era of shooters, and doom literally was the one that defined it as that, as everyone was trying to ape dooms success. carmack would say something, it would get published in a mag, and so everyone else started trying to do that. its why duke was all snarky quips and toilet humor. its why every other shooter didnt even fucking bother with a story. by Q3 or UT99 you sometimes didnt even rly have a singleplayer campaign at all other than just fighting bots.
amongst all of that you had DF1+2, which were heavily story driven, and clearly had the majority of their focus put on their singleplayer exp.

its absolutely the odd one out of the era. youre gonna have to really reach to find any other FPS up until like HL or gaylo that tried that hard to make a good singleplayer campaign. and by then were already getting into the next gen of shooters entirely. the boomershooter era was defined by its lack of story, and focus on the DM/MP exp. DF1+2 bucked that trend
>>
>>12897102
Shooters were considerably different, but Carmack was speaking on video games as a whole.

>it's why every other shooter didn't even bother with a story
Story was pretty important in
>Turok 2
>Turok 3
>Strife
>Hexen
>Marathon
>Outlaws

But yes, it was not the norm. For shooters. It was not the norm medium-wide.

mindwar fucking sucks tho, so i guess i cant blame you

The scale, the design, the puzzles, the story, etc. Even though it’s “forgotten,” I think it’s endured with such a large fan community because it’s still almost a perfect game by today’s standards. Yeah, the graphics, but at the time they were cutting-edge for games, and I think the retro look is becoming more appreciated as times goes on and jeet “developers” keep hogging more and more ram and hd space for bland ultra-realism. For that period, it has to be in the pantheon of defining pc games alongside MechWarrior 2, Quake, Half Life, Warcraft 2, SC, Civ 2, et al. I think it’s only weak in multiplayer capabilities. And the expansion is notorious for big parts clearly being unfinished.

The story is told the exact same way as Doom and Heretic and is exactly as "deep".
>>

I liked Dark Forces 2's graphics, even now. Then again, I enjoy simpler graphics. Allows your mind to fill in the blanks, yadda yadda yadda.

Holy fucking based

Halo One and Two didn’t have achievements or “quests”

Keyhunting is lazy game design

star wars games can never not be slop because they are licensed games and inherently unoriginal. that leaves them as a fun diversion or novelty at best, not anything that can massively impact pop culture or vidya history.

Same. I loved System Shock 2's graphics too despite being bad even for 1999.

You don’t know what slop is.
>>
>>12898086
Actually, Dark Forces was very influencial to Duke Nukem 3D. It's just that basically nobody's ever noticed it except me. I'm pretty sure the initial pitch for Duke Nukem 3D before they got Greg Malone to craft its identity was "let's just re-do everything Dark Forces did"
>>

>keyhunting = lazy
You just don’t like being challenged. All the keys in df2 aren’t really that difficult to find, and you’re very often rewarded on the way with power-ups, fun combat, and good satisfaction at having solved a puzzle.
>>
>>12899005
>key hunting
>in df2
Most of the game revolves around solving puzzles to advance, not finding keys. There's more switches you need to find, which I guess you could call keys, but the game leads you to them.
>>

>Keyhunting is lazy game design
tell me you didnt play the game without telling me you didnt play the game.
the only things youre ever really "hunting" in DF2 game are the optional seekrit areas. which youre probably just gonna do anyways, because its fun, they usually give you a ton of ammo and powerups, and they also award you with more force powers to unlock every level
