Not a fan, but it's not unplayably bad or anything.
    >even as someone that likes Kojima's art her take on Simon here just doesn't fit, I think even she thought so since her modern takes on Simon are much closer to the earlier designs
    >hitboxes have been altered on your whip and subweapons, very annoying if you've familarized yourself with the x68k version
    >new difficulty is nice for newcomers but offers nothing for fans of the original
    >remixed soundtrack doesn't fit the tone of the series but I guess they wanted to do something different after years of remixes so I don't think it's too bad as its own thing
Just not really worth revisiting outside of curiosity. CV1 was my favorite prior to playing x68k and one of the few things that held it back in my mind is feeling too easy after a few playthroughs so the new difficulty of x68k was great for me.

3, Bloodlines, 1, SOTN, Rondo, Game boy advance stuff, 2, 4, Chronicles and 64 tie at the bottom. I like things about all of them. Even 64 isn’t so bad. I think 4 has great presentation and music, but its just too easy and the all directions whip makes it so casual.

I've only played Chronicles and 1 so far... I loved Chronicles' arrage mode, didn't even try the OG due to hearing how the X68000 is for more hardcore fans. I went this route as I wanted to start with 1, and this seemed similar, but with the added difficulty settings, and saving, it was great, I got through on Easy with 5 lives at first, then Normal with 3, after that I put Chronicles down in order to try out 1, and I love it so far... still, the Frankenstein boss is filtering me, and the one time I got through it was the corridor before the Death boss that did it, this is rough, but fun. I'm not sure if I'll manage to beat it though, I hope I can, we'll see.

I managed to beat CV1 and it's truly sublime, it pissed me off a lot more than Chronicles, but it's a better video game, and the one I'd replay over the other. Now I'm going for CV4 or Rondo of Blood probably, I like the simplicity of using the whip and subweapons, linear levels, but I want something more comfortable and/or with saves/password.

People get really hyperbolic about Chronicles vs. x68k. The biggest difference is just that Chronicles Original Mode is less difficult than the real original game. You get a more generous hitbox on the whip and some of the bosses are easier. All the other differences are just minor tweaks in enemy behavior and positioning.

I honestly don't know what people are talking about when they say Chronicles is some horrible butchered version of the game. They never go into any specifics. Either they're talking about Arrange Mode (which IS so much easier than the original that it's a completely different experience), or they noticed something I didn't, or it's just a meme people repeat.
    >>
having a existential breakdown in a fetla position on the floor > any castlevania or metroid game

When I was growing up I was all about the Sotn and gameboy advance/Nintendo ds games. At 35 I decided to try the old stuff and now those are my favorite. Rondo. 3. Etc. I wish they would go back to making one like that again.
    >>
    >>12894746
Graphics are worse quality, cropped at the top (with the HUD covering part of the screen on top of that), and stretched.
The cropped screen makes it that during vertical scrolls, eneemies spawn later than they are supposed to (which makes a big difference when it comes to flying enemies).
    Some enemies have worse AI
The whip hit detection is WAY more generous than it should be. Combined those last 2 points together and you get things like the Werewolf boss being one of the hardest bosses in the original, turning into a pushover in Chronicles.
The sound quality is atrocious, hitting candles isn't supposed to sound like you're popping balloons.
The timer depletes faster than it should. This makes one stage in particular (the lab with Frankenstein's monster) MUCH harder to complete without dying due to lack of time and using a checkpoint, if you know what you're doing and hurry the fuck up (and run away from Frankenstein's instead of killing him), you'll have barely 10 secs left once you clear the stage vs 30+secs in the original. Instead of fixing this, they added the option to turn off the timer in "Arrange Mode".

So in short, gameplay is fucked, sound is fucked, graphics are fucked, and you didn't beat the game.

I think the werewolf is plenty hard in Chronicles. I agree with you about the sound and visuals being worse, though.

    >>12896303
You should play both. Arrange is a fun easy mode with a great soundtrack, but Original is much much closer to the intended experience. If you don't play Original, you won't know what people are talking about when they talk about Chronicles being hard.
    >>
    >>12896303
Then it's the exact same thing except with my-first-romhack tier damage modifiers to make it easier, and now you play as a faggot and can turn off the timer

Personally I think it's really nice of the game to say to players
    >oh yeah you want easy mode ? in a port that's already made easier than the original? Well then you'll have to play as a faggot.

It's the worst castlevania game but to be fair it needs to be put into context. By the standards of early game boy releases it's not bad at all. It's just the least good game in a series where almost all the games are really good
    >>
For me it's still 1, 3 and 4 for the top 3, then Rondo, then a toss up between Bloodlines, Chronicles and 64.
SOTN and the others I consider a different series and only really played SOTN, it was a good game but I prefer the classics.
Simon's Quest I never finished, got lost and bored, maybe some day I'll finally go through it, just because it's part of the original trilogy.
    >>
    >>12885332
I know everybody wants to dickride III but honestly I don't get it. Yes, it's a return to form after the not-quite-failed experiment of II and it looks great and sounds great and the extra characters are fun, but...the NA version of III almost feels spiteful. It's not that they failed to balance the game so much as I'm not sure they even tried. There's just so many dickish parts, and the ones that really stuck out to me this time were
    >that cocksucking waterfall stair level where every bone tower is expertly positioned to be a maxiumum pain the ass where the fireballs always catch you just as you're coming to the top of a stairway while the infinitely respawning kamikaze winged demons keep reminding you of how sluggish and janky the controls are whenever you're using stairs
    >the swinging pendulums that launch you face-first into oncoming bats that come flying in from offscreen that leave you so little time to react that you have to basically start your attack animation from the other side of the screen before you're even moving in that direction.
    >the doppelganger who has the same weapon, speed, reach and attack animation you do but does four times as much damage so you have to hit him five times for every one time he hits you
    >and of course death's fist phase which is and always has been shit
I just don't see what it has to offer over the later games that ditched the assrape difficulty spikes. Rondo and IV are the exact same style of game, they look better and have better music, better controls, and they're difficult in places but never as sadistic as the worst parts of I or 3. So...how are they not better games? 3 is a great game, and still worth playing but I would never, ever consider it the best one. I'm not even sure it's top 3.

Creating a character with the slowest movement and worst controls in the franchise and then giving them some of the hardest platforming sections of the entire series was definitely a sadistic choice.

I never made it past Stage 2 when playing on original hardware and had to absolutely abuse save states to even complete it on a emulator

    >>12901298
that section where the exploding eyeballs destroy the bridge forcing you to make pixel perfect jumps was bullshit

Nah, the Japanese version difficulty is a joke. Too many crosses (and equivalent) handed to the player.
Also Grant is better in US version, people who think he's better in the JP version are only looking at the theory on a surface level and didn't actually play the game. In the US version you can have a constant choice between stabbing and throwing the knife, in the JP version you only have the throw, how is that supposed to be better I don't know.

Maybe play the JP version as a first playthrough so you can play easy mode before playing normal mode; but if one intends to only play once (in which case he didn't beat the game) he should play the US version
    >>
    >>12906043
    >Nah, the Japanese version difficulty is a joke.
The JP version's difficulty is far more consistent and it ramps up naturally. The US version's later difficulty is absurd and the early game is shockingly easy because you can take a billion hits. The US version starts off so much easier than the JP version, in fact it's so laughably easy that it's a slog to replay.
    >>
I dont think classicvania is comparable to the other games at all
    >>
Why is there no romhack for 3 that has the Japanese soundtrack and no censorship, but US difficulty? You'd think that was a no brainer
    >>
    >>12906212
For years now the average romhack consist in embedding gameshark-tier cheat codes into games and calling that "QoL". If you asked they'd probably be saying "just play the Japanese version lmao" and then cope by pretending it's the only "dev intended" version and the US is "rental difficulty" and what not.
If anything they'd probably rather add "QoL" to the JP version but even that's unlikely now since NES nostalgia is over
