>>12880718How the fuck do I get gud at anti-gravity racing games? Not just /vr/ ones like Wipeout, but any of them in general. They seem to handle very differently from conventional racers.
>>12885228Well, even AG racers seem to differ between each other. I only have experience with F-Zero and Wipeout - F-Zero is easy to pickup but the challenge is winning the races in harder difficulties. In the SNES and N64 games you should master double tapping the shoulder buttons for quick turning, and be gentle with analog inputs for the N64 game (use a lower sensitivity setting if emulating). Been so long since I last played GX that I can't give you any tips there. As for Wipeout (classic trilogy and BallisticNG), it's a complete different ballpark. The ships are more weighty and harder to turn, so you have to prepare your turn in advance and make judicious use of the side brakes. Sharp turns will require you to turn very early and use side braking so you take it in a "drifting" form. You can also shift the weight of the ship up and down, which can cause it to speed up and slow down respectively. If F-Zero is easy to pickup and hard to master, Wipeout is hard to pickup and even harder to master. Begin with 3 which has gentler physics. Once you get the hang of it, the modern Wipeouts will be easy to handle.
>>12885316I want a Wipeout game that plays like F-Zero. I like everything about Wipeout apart from the actual driving. I'd also be willing to settle for an F-Zero game with Wipeout's weapons.

>>12885316>Wipeout is hard to pickup and even harder to master. Begin with 3 which has gentler physics. Once you get the hang of it, the modern Wipeouts will be easy to handle.Damn. I guess I'll do this since a friend of mine gave me his copy of the Wipeout Omega HD Collection for PS4. I'll start with Wipeout 3. Or maybe I'll just keep the Omega Collection on my shelf while I ease my way into the genre with F-Zero. Which F-Zero would you recommend for a beginner?
>>12885443>Which F-Zero would you recommend for a beginner?Just pick whichever you want to play. I started with GX, then SNES, then one of the GBA games, then X which ended up being my favorite. The 3D titles are easy to play, just hard to beat the CPU on harder difficulties, but try the easier difficulties and you'll git gud eventually. Mode-7 F-Zeros require some practice.
>>12885494Thank you. I'll keep all of those games in mind as I sift through YouTube to see which one I like the look of best.

>>12885434I made it a personal mission of mine to try and pin down the best old dirtbike games. Championship Motocross 2001 has a career mode where you have not only tune your bike for each event based on surface and weather, you also have to maintain and rebuild your bike periodically or else it'll break down on you. EA's Supercross 2001 (just called Supercross on the box) is probably the best freestyle game on the PS1. MTX Mototrax is a dirt bike Tony Hawk game, though an unfinished one. they struck gold with the THPS4-style open levels with missions and gaps scattered around and special tricks and the like, but it's like they ran out of ideas for cool levels so there's only 4. Freestyle MetalX is basically the Dave Mirra to MTX's Tony Hawk. basically the same thing but a bit worse across the board. Freakstyle is made like (and I believe by the same devs as) SSX, and would probably be the best dirt bike game of that era if it weren't for the utterly abhorrent catchup the AI has in races. no matter how good you do you are fully at the mercy of the COM not just strapping a booster rocket to their bike and blowing past you at 200mph at the line.
>>12889023the psygnosis games. 99 or 2000 are the definitive refinements of their F1 engine. unfortunately every single PS1 F1 game is a clunky chore to play because the hardware just can't handle 20+ cars going that fast around a track. you're much better off booting up modded GP2 in DOSBox.

are there any fifth gen rally games with a full WRC season and grid? Colin McRae is missing events and teams.
I do wish there were more classic need for speed style games. Games where it is cool street tracks and cool cars - real or fiction doesn't matter - without a heavy focus on many arcade styling of the time like timed checkpoints or a sole focus on beating other competitors. Just being able to do laps while weaving between traffic is very relaxing even at high speeds. Test drive does but the 3d games are pretty rough, burnout only really touches on that for the first two games and beyond that my knowledge of similar titles is sparse. Midtown madness and midnight club are sort of in that style but the open world doesn't scratch that itch.
The qualifying sessions in this game are kinda bullshit. You'll set the fastest lap during the 12 laps you have available and then find yourself 10th in the starting grid because the entire session is an hour long and the CPU will simulate superlaps for themselves, and you must have a good starting position if you play with damages enabled. The only counter is entering the pits in the penultimate lap and let the timer run (which you cannot fast forward in-game, only via emulator) so the CPU doesn't cheat. Oh and you'll have to go out of the pits a few seconds before the timer runs out and complete your last lap or otherwise they'll cheat too.
>>12892435Check out the differences - top is with simulated laps, bottom is no simulated laps. My time was the same in both, the one set in the post above.
>>12885227It's evil

As much as muh nostalgia goes a long way even with real hardware the playstation version of need for speed II is a hell of a lot easier to play when it isn't running at 10fps because of the cockpit view (setting GTE to being a single clock cycle in emulation really, really helps performance).

>>12893396You can get the emulated PS1 game running at 60fps with a hack too. I can imagine the DC triggers being kinda bad for sidebraking
I fucking hate this game so much. Fuck me for seeking F1 recommendations. The CPU cheats so much. So, in medium race length, the hard tires still degrade as fast as the softs (they only have an effect in the long race distance) so in theory everyone has to pit once per race. But Schumacher went and did all the race without a single pitbox stint somehow. I was 1 sec away when I had to enter the pits. All the other drivers pitted, but not our Schumi! couldn't be precious Schumi! stealing me blind! and he gets to be a world champion? what a sick joke! Ever since getting a decent sound setup (and not some garbled 2W TV speakers) I have really come to both appreciate and loathe the sound design of racing games. Even giving somewhat of a pass for the 16bit era and older where sure, beep boop is the best you can do (though naturally titles on the beefier hardware can sound very good) the amount of racing games even deep into the 32bit era where cd quality and the like was available have car engines that just drone and environmental sounds - like say, thunder - that are crunchier than my morning cereal.Obviously the games that do it well now pop more than ever before, especially given the engine revving is a sound the a player is going to hear continuously during play. I have come to realise how much of the overall gaming experience I had been diluting with the poor sound output.
