Do you plan on using AI to retro-fit (no pun intended) older games, to make dream games you think should've been made, or to finish unfinished projects that were leaked, or to simply mod older games? To what degree do you think AI will be accepted within the retro gaming hobby? Strictly using it as an easy/cheap/fast way of setting up and booting titles on modern machines, or completely remastering the game with AI?

The reality is that we are never turning back the clock, and AI is going to be with us forever, like the Internet, or smart phones, or crypto-currency. The only thing you're going to see from an AI bubble popping is consolidation, not a reduction in prevalence. The internet is actually more ubiquitous now than it was in 2000.

>>12873554Yes. I imagine it will be possible in the near future to ask an AI to improve/tweak the CPU behaviour in a game. For example, most retro fighting games have no online scene, the CPU in their arcade mode sucks, and it's very unlikely that you have someone to play against locally. You could ask an AI to improve the CPU in the arcade mode so that it plays like a real player, resulting in a fairer experience. You could also ask it to simulate an online ranked environment, designing different "players" for you to play against, each with their own behaviour, and allowing you to rank up as if the game actually had an online ranked mode.

>>12875434i dont get it either. the value is "haha, crazy" for a minute, like those video edits where it's "mr bean in cyberpunk" or some shit. the thing with mods is they sometimes might improve the game a little, making something in the original stand out. these mashups however kinda walk over and ignore the substance of the originals, not really adding or improving anything.i dont dismiss these as bad because "they're ai", ive yet to see anything worthwhile. i doubt anything of actual value will ever emerge. meh

Yes. I want to replace the guards in the original splinter cell with women, and sam fisher with a woman too. I have several blender models that would make good candidates, and I'm somewhat experienced with game modding, but Splinter Cell for PC is a bit of a black box. It would probably be easier to just make a stealth game in godot or unity from scratch, but that's also a massive pain in the ass. Some day I'm probably going to get an agentic AI to do it for me.

>>12873693For me it's:If even its author didn't play it, then I won't play it.If its author didn't have time for it, then I don't have time for it.If its author doesn't like the game, then I don't have to like the author or his slop.If its author is a serial liar, I don't have to trust him. It's very simple. >>12873554I used Arena.ai to vibe code two small projects I've had brewing in the back of my mind for the past two weeks. 1. DevilutionX (open-source, hand-crafted, pre-AI Diablo 1 decomp) with optional Gauntlet-like arcade combat. I've always loved the lore and atmosphere of Diablo's Sanctuary, but damn, the gameplay just isn't for me. I loved playing Gauntlet as a kid however, so I thought I'd try to prompt a combination of the two. It mostly worked, although the Gauntlet mode only activates in dungeons at the moment. Maybe in the next iteration, I'll ask the AI model to extend it into the overworld as well, although I'd have to tweak the health-draining logic to be more forgiving due to the scarcity of health items and loot. 2. Mr. Boom (open source libretro Bomberman clone) with two optional custom modes>Pressure CookerPlayer speed gradually increases along with the bomb blast radius (No power-ups/diseases, just a fight for survival against your own motor skills)>B-Daman BattleA simple shootout mode that mimics the gameplay of Bomberman B-Daman for SNES that supports up to 8 players. I'll post them here once I've ironed out some issues.>>12877217You'd have to ask an LLM to decompile one of those games first. There's an open source clone called OpenCombat however, so you could use a free service like Arena.ai, post a link to the github repo, and ask it to parse through the source to make the AI more intelligent.
>>12878438>modderBut I don't want to mod anything. Mods are gay and autistic. I want something new from scratches.

No I don’t use ai. I use. si.
So after a few tries I managed to make a lua script with Grok for Mighty Final Fight which can show me the enemies' hp. Of course that if the ram addresses for the data weren't on the net already it wouldn't have been able to do shit.
>>12883757>RAM addressesYou're very lucky, indeed. I tried using Copilot to create a romhack for a Genesis game but trying to use the BlastEm debugger was a pain in the ass. Tilelayer Pro is so archaic it's practically useless, and all of the alternatives have to be built from source.I thought I'd try generating some new GameShark codes for Crazy Taxi, but the one RAM explorer for Flycast has to be compiled from source. I thought I'd build it with MSYS2, but it's only compatible with Visual Studio, and it needs all these extensions that would eat up the remaining storage on my C: drive. I just gave up in the end.
>>12883757Why not having it so that enemy lifebar shows up below the player?
>>12883820This way they're always visible, and not only when you hit them. It was just an experiment to test things. >>12873640>>12873632Not quite related to AI, but when I had more free time a few years ago I started watching some basic lectures on coding and then got Godot and did some tutorial games on that. It's not impossible to pick up, even though I had a very rudimentary understanding through experimenting and googling results I was able to achieve some basic things like making a 3D model move around with controls etc. With AI now you can probably do the same, but then accelerate your progress by getting AI to give you suggestions on coding like 'I want to make X happen when Y is input' etc and it'll give you some code to use. Before AI you could achive the same result with some leg work like looking up videos or going to forums or trial/error but this would make it a bit easier?

Apparently there's a decomp/recomp of Crusader: No Remorse that enables smooth scrolling and other improvements but I don't know how to run it
>>12885670The streets need them
>>12885723I don't care if you dislike MUGEN, but I do dislike it, yes.I would much rather play a fighting game made with care and love than the slapped-together nonsense of a typical MUGEN setup.

>>12886280Is this AI? I looked at its sources, it seems to be a composite of an existing engine and resource pack that do not have AI listed in their github. If the AI is applying the resource pack to said engine it's not that impressive.
>>12885723Mugen does suck. Not gonna pretend I didn't play it as a kid, but as an adult yeah that shit is stupid
>>12886319I'm not a schizo enough to give a shit. It's a new thing. Probably used AI, I don't know
>>12886332Mugen is an engine, baseline mugan is just karate man, there are projects that transform that into a full game, Mugen is fantastic as an early open engine, obviously most people did just use it to make a dream roster hodgepodge though.
>>12886337Kind of feels like you were trying to do a gotcha by posting it without context in the AI argument thread.
>>12886345>I'm having a schizo momentOkThis is the "cool mod shit in videogames" thread. It just happens to be all AI, because everything is AI, including that Mario thing probably
>>12886342I've never played or even seen a Mugen thing that made me go "wow this has the polish of a commercial product"
>>12886364Read the first post in the thread, the question is "do you plan to use AI in projects", not "post AI projects."If doing the bare minimum of reading the opening post and then glancing at some attribution on github is schizophrenic I guess I should be institutionalized, but at least I won't be mentally retarded like you.
>>12886378No, and I don't think you could even release one if you wanted to, it's not something you can legally license for commercial distibution, but that doesn't mean those projects don't have worth.
>>12886381Well it's not my fauly the OP typed the wrong words in the opening post
The truth most of you are unready for is that proprietary software is worse than AI slop. I won't condone vibecoding for original projects, but AI has done enormous good in effectively making all software open source. While I would prefer these reverse engineering efforts to be done by real people, the fact that these games are no longer locked down by the publishers is a good thing.
>>12886552I'm hoping that Craft suite gets better. Photocraft doesn't have generative fill, so it's useless. It takes like 3 seconds to open versus Adobe's 15 seconds
>>12886552>The truth most of you are unready for is that proprietary software is worse than AI slopI don't agree, but it doesn't matter because proprietary software going forward will be ai slop anyway>these games are no longer locked downmaybe I've just been lucky, but there hasn't been any retro game that I've been unable to play with good old piracy and emulation. the pc ports look interesting, but even if they were being lovingly crafted by intelligent human beings I would still prefer the original experience anyway
>>12886697>but there hasn't been any retro game that I've been unable to play with good old piracy and emulationThat's beside the point: decompilations allow us to learn how the programs work so we can modify them and do as we please with them.
>>12886704>I play castlevania with zero from megaman! do you?
>>12886714I play bloodborne with path tracing. do you?
>>12886714I fixed your game's shitty bugs and improved the framerate. Do you?
>>12873554>AI slopInherently not retro
>>12886924maybe we need a /vv/ for vintage videogamesor /va/ for antique videogamesproperly old, no changes, no patches, no translationssure, in 2046 castlevania with zero from megaman will be an antique. but I will be dead. probably
>>12886936>entire board is 1 sega system post per week and nothing else
>>12887023Sounds like heaven.
>>12886936>Inherently not retroNeither are romhacks then.
>>12874978Link?
>>12873554Not sure when we'll get there, but porting video games into other genres does sound kind of cool. Imagine Star Wars: A New Hope but as a point and click adventure game in the style of Fate of Atlantis.
>>12887313Not him, but depends on the romhack and how much of it is period accurate or able to run on a real system. This isn't exactly the gotcha you think it is when we've had plenty of threads here debating about things like emulator-exclusive romhacks.Hell, throw sourceports and such into the mix too. People here were ragging on decomps not being a true experience long before AI static recomps were a thing.
>>12887594>we've hadYou can "suck my nuts" for all I care with your "discussion-having", the fact of the matter is if using an AI is inherently non-retro, than so is any alteration past the point of the /vr/ thumbnail.
>>12887623That is a stance people have had in the past, yes. You're bringing up nothing new.
>>12886924Retro isn't old, it's in the style of old. Look up the word. Retard.
>>12873554I was in the other adventure game thread, and saw this one, and would just like to say, I can't wait for AI to allow easy solo authorship, so I can start making adventure games of my favorite properties, like SCREAM.
If I get ambitious enough I might try to use AI to finish Dinosaur Planet. The Discord troons seem to have given up on it at this point.
>>12886378King of Fighters Anthology comes pretty close.
>>12886378Card Sagas Wars?
this whole board is just one guy samefagging about AI slop at this point

Has anyone had issues with Claude's identity verification? I had to cancel my pro account and request a refund because it wasn't accepting my ID.
>>12894018...you need to give this shit your ID? Why do AI fags support this?
>>12894025You need to give your ID just to use X/Twitter
>>12894027Maybe if it thinks you're a spambot or something.
>>12894027>>12894025What the fuck retarded countries do you guys live in? I'm in the US and I have not been prompted o present a form of id for anything from AI to setting up a utility at any point in my life in the past 20 years to date... including ai and paying for any subs ever.
>>12894034You need to give them your info if you want to see 18+. Maybe not for posting. I never post on that shit website so I don't even know
>>12894025>>12894039I live in the US, but it prompted me to verify my ID after I ran out of session usage, then it rejected my state ID because it's expired. You need to upload two forms of ID if you want to use anything about a Pro-tier account.
>>12894048*AboveI think people should be aware of this before they use Claude. It seems to have accepted my refund though so this could also be a way to cheat the system setting up multiple puppet accounts for free usage.
>>12894048It's all worth it to recomp N64 games and put Mega Man X in everything.
>>12894057I've actually already got a lot of use out of it in one session, I repaired Twisted Metal 2 for the PC and now I am making some aesthetic presentational changes and after I'm going to get into adding new characters and levels, rebalancing the game. It's surprisingly good.
>>12893975Holy BASED thank you.
>>12873554I have a pet project where I'm training my locally run LLM on the hardware documentation of my favorite retro console and building an engine for it. I intend to make original games with my custom engine once it's built out enough. it's amazing technology and I've fully embraced it.I'm not big on one-shotting stuff or getting some premium model to just spit out something based on a vague description because that's boring and uncreative. But I see no problem with genuinely using it as a tool to expedite the process of things you already comprehend and know how to do by hand, as opposed to just letting it imagine and invent things for you.
>>12873554Just bought a Claude subscription, starting with ripping assets from current unripped games, going smoothly
