Grass is normally the best choice because the majority of your wild-caught grass pokemon are early-route shitmons.

early route fire types are super rare, though
    >>
    >>59690898
Are all great pokemon in general except Chikorita and Transcat
    >>
    >>59690898
What do you need a grass type for?
    >>
i thought grass was the easy mode as it was good against the first few gyms at least in gen 1 i wonder who are the easy modes of the other gens
    >>
    >>59691244
My gut says most of the time water is the easy mode. It’s pretty much always water simply because water is such a broken type (only two weaknesses and grass isn’t every offensive while electric types are relatively rare). And they get ice coverage privelge. And they get Surf/waterfall the two only good HMs in combat.

I only ever pick the Grass starters. I just like the color Green and, fortunately, the Grass starters all tend to be my favorite Grass-type Pokemon in their regions.
That said, Fire starters are arguably the "best" to go with because Fire-type Pokemon are so scarce in comparison to Grass and especially Water-type Pokemon.
I am sure we will get a ton of new Grass and Water-type Pokemon in the new region since it is an archipelago, but we really do need more Fire-type Pokemon.
Archipelagos are hot, right? Surely how hot it is in the region will lead to there being more Fire-type Pokemon. Or have a volcano area just filled to the brim with them.

If by "Easy mode" we take it to mean "beats the first two gyms", between Johto and Galar there's none (with Grass in Gen 2 being akin to Fire in Gen 1 and having first two gyms strong against Grass) and Fire is the "easy mode" for Paldea (Bug and Grass being the first two gyms there).

    So true

    >>59690898
Gen1: Vileplume and Victreebell are as good as Venasaur in-game
Gen2: Johto's weird "actually a sequel" design means we get Vileplume and Victreebel again, though you can make your Gloom a Blossom instead.
Gen3: Shrifty sucks but Ludicolo is great
Gen4: Roserade is good, Cherrim sucks
Gen5: Leavanny, Lilligant, and Whimsicott are all good early grass mons.
    Gen6: Gogoats kinda a shitter.
Gen7: Arguably doesn't even have any early grass types.
    Gen8: Eldegoss is serviceable
Gen9: Arboliva is a good single player tank.
So not only are grass types not limited to being early game, the ones that are are usually good by their debut games standards. The only gen you can kind of argue this is Johto, since the new grass mons are generally shitty, but they aren't really the "early route grass type" in function since GSC was generally about reusing the Gen1 Pokemon in new ways with the new gen2 mons being "secrets"

    >>59691517
checked its learnset and skiddo/gogoat doesn't seem that bad
good special bulk, decent attack, usable speed, has a grass immunity, gets coverage, setup, and recovery via level up, etc
maybe it's a shitter compared to a starter or some older mons but in a playthrough it functions perfectly fine
    >>
    >>59690898
    >Vileplume
    >Never felt the need for a Grass type in Johto
    >Breloom, Shiftry, and Ludicolo are are serviceable
    >Roserade is great the entire game
    >Leavanny & Lilligant are great. Simisage is better than you’d expect
    >Gogoat is good
    >Tsareena is kind of in a gray area of being early but is still good
    >Eldegoss kind of mid. Applin is useless for the first 3 badges. Can get several old stone evolutions before even the first badge at least
    >Didnt play SV so can’t speak on that
More often than not there’s an alternative that works for the main campaign
    >>
    >>59691517
can you even get shiftry or ludicolo before the 5th gym in hoenn? with one cartridge anyway
    >>
    >>59691731
Only way is with EV training minigame in ORAS iirc. Nuzleaf can evolve shortly afterwards though
    >>
    >>59691737
eventually ill get around to playing those games
    >>
    >>59690898
Grass is normally the worst because every game drowns you in flying and poison type enemies for most of the run
    >>
Grass is usually the best starter to choose because plant monsters are kino and way more interesting than fire monsters or water monsters.
    >>59691173
Chikorita is actually the greatest one of all.
    >>
    >>59691689
yeah gogoat is solid, perfectly good for a playthrough

    >who are the easy modes of the other gens
    >Gen 2
no one in particular has an advantage over the first 2-3 gyms off the top of my head
    >Gen 3
water, mostly because while grass can also roll Roxanne easily enough and no one has an edge on brawly, by the time you hit Wattson you have a water/ground to trivialize him
    >Gen 4
Grass I suppose, though I cant remember if Chimchar gets fighting attacks early enough for Roark
    >Gen 5
Fire, mostly for the third badge but you also have fighting attacks for the second one
    >Gen 6
I barely remember the gyms in this. Isn't bug first? Fire I guess
    >Gen 7
Water I suppose, how early does it get fairy attacks?
    >Gen 8
I could not tell you the order of gyms in this game
    >Gen 9
As above but even less because its sort of open world
    >>
    >>59693100
Cyndaquil has an advantage over Bugsy and even evolves early and one could technically count sprout tower as a a psuedo gym (i think it even has more trainers than falkner's gym). Though (at least in the orignal) Falker's mud slap gives it some trouble.
    >>
    >>59690898
When I have the water starter, I don't NEED grass.
And I'll have an electric type to deal with the later game water trainers.
    >>
    >>59693105
    >Cyndaquil has an advantage over Bugsy
you're right, that slipped me for some reason. I have it in my head that cyndaquil takes ages to get good fire attacks but it does get ember at least
    >>
Overall I would think taking a Fire starter is a much better early game decision.
Yeah, the early Grass types are kind of shitty but at least they exist, the first true early game non-starter Fire type was like fucking Pansear, every Fire type beforehand was mid game at the earliest or more commonly towards the ass end.
    >>
    >>59691244
    >who are the easy modes of the other gens
    >Gen 2
Has a hard mode in Chikorita. Cyndaquil and Totodile are pretty even.
    >Gen 3
Mudkip stomps the whole region. When he evolves his only weakness is grass, which has no gym and is very easy to counter.
    >Gen 4
    Pretty balanced between all three.
    >Gen 5
Tepig. Wrecks gyms 2 and 3, almost unkillable as Pignite if you give him eviolite, absolutely rapes gym 7 if you're playing BW1, and in a weird twist he's actually the best for rock types because the arm thrust multihit breaks sturdy.
Haven't played anything more recent than that.

    grass is shit
    >>
    >>59690898
Grass is a type that most people don't give a shit about having on their team. Water and Electric cover most of its bases while generally having cooler mons and moves.

Grass sucks when a number of early mon are Flying type.
    >>
    >>59690898
Nah, there's usually a couple a pretty good grass types to choose from, tons of other great water types, and maybe 1 other good fire type. I almost always go fire.
    >>
    >>59690898
Bellsprout is better than Chikorita and its the 1st wild Grass type in Gen II.
