They transitioned from a normal freemium model where you earn free currency and unlock whatever you want, into the EoS freemium model where you are forced to unlock everything in a specific order including things you don't want. This has killed literally every freemium game it was used it in, I don't know why any dev would implement it unless they were intentionally trying to kill their game.

Nobody knows exactly why it's ending, but it's probably politics, as the playerbase isn't that small and the interest is definitely still there. If that's the case, hopefully we're going to get a successor of some sort like others suggested but knowing TPC it's unlikely to happen
As for what's bad about the game, it mostly comes down to two things: monetization and balance

It's a weird kind of feel bros, it's kinda like visiting your friend that's dying from terminal cancer and catching up with them, then leaving knowing that was probably the last time you will ever talk with them.

I’m going to sound fucking crazy because there IS a balance issue especially with new mons but I don’t think it’s intentional or incompetence (at least not most of the tike some cases itt pretty blatant). The pace at which they add mons means having proper time to play test fully likely isn’t feasible, also they give each Pokémon a unique gimmick so that also have to factor that in. And even then if a Pokémon does poorly is it because the pokemon is bad or because it’s difficult to master. It’s telling that they still regularly did balance patches for Pokemon introduced in the first era of the game .

like, just include all the starters and eeveelutions (eevee can evolve into any of its eeveelutions depending to the move picked at the beginning) from the get go so people aren't bummed out when a new mon is revealed
there are so many mons, and some even have interesting gimmicks
