Can anyone recommend me ROMhacks where you can have and use Cosplay Pikachu, from ORAS? I love them to death, but don't know a single ROMhack that includes them.
>>
I want to create custom Gen3 sprites with special focus on replicating the RSE and FRLG art style (more so the latter). Already did some experiments over time (picrel, focusing on projects like OW sprites for items and pokeball variants, or altering signs for more variation), but have some troubles with basics.

>Software
What software is recommended for this hobby? Free (I'm using GIMP for a couple of years now) or premium (e.g. Asperite)? Would prefer FOSS, but wouldn't mind buying a software license if it's good. GIMP lacks features which makes animating sprites tedious, and I don't want to spent money on something I might eventually discard.

>Color Palettes
How do I create custom color palettes equal to those used in RSE and FRLG? Are there rules (e.g. color theories) or doesn't it matter because GameFreak also used arbitrary colors for their palettes? How do I use "GBA-fast" colors only (considering the GBA didn't have a color selection as vast as modern tech)? Are there special settings or ways to check if the color is "correct"? I've been copying palettes from existing sprites, but it seems rather odd and cheap when multiple sprites are similarly colored. Or should one try to use as few color palettes as possible by copying palettes?

>Color Gradients
Similar to palettes, but specifically focusing on how to create brighter / darker colors. Are there rules or is it random as well?

>Saving sprites
Aside from randomly pasting all results onto a blank, what's recommended to orderly array sprites? Maybe templates? How should one name and archive sprites in folders? What image file formats should be used, both to not tamper with the quality and to assure the accumulating amount of sprites don't become "messy"?

I notice others providing documentation for their games regarding where to find certain mons and whatnot. Of course, there are games with their own dedicated wikis, but my game is intended to be a one-time small scale adventure.

Oh yeah, an NPC for mints is a good idea actually, and she'll give/sell the Gracidea down the line too.

This NPC is meant to be the type who decorates flower crowns, puts it on your head and laughs, so maybe she could give or sell stat feathers in addition to flowers. (And sure, Ho-oh & Lugia's feathers too.) I already have plans for a seperate NPC who gives/sells/something mochi anyways.

Just watch a buncha tutorials to cover your ass, that's exactly what I'm doing. Essentials has a lot of easy-to-locate plugin support too, but uh... try not to get too greedy.
>>
>>59682265
Once you're half decent at coding or if you have knowledge on some other system or this one, you'll start to have some kind of idea on how a certain thing or feature/s can be achieved.
>>
>>59682247
>Do I need to be a good coder to use essentials
Only if you want to do something that can't be done in 90% of real pokemon games.
>>
>>59682100
entirely up to you man. some people will bitch and refuse to play your game if there's no documentation. personally I think it's relatively harmless, and people who want to discover things can just not look at it, you can also limit what's included in it. but you just gotta decide where you draw your line in the sand. it's your game, make the experience you want to make, don't compromise on that.

I played and I thought it was really generic. There are a lot of tiling issues in this game, but my biggest gripe is that the story has no point. You’re sort of going through the motions. It isn’t until gym 4 where the champion gets called out for cheating with a mythical where it got interesting. I wouldn’t know beyond that though cause I dropped it around the second evil team raid at around the same time. The ending I saw on YouTube doesn’t imply that anything really changed. This game also uses Gen 5 music poorly, either it’s a bad midi conversion or doesn’t fit the mood.

I spent 10 hours on this and It felt like a waste of time.

Puta madre, coding a single ability, and I do mean the one and only ability I intend to code for my project, has proven complex. I have always heard that it was difficult while moves were easy, but this is something.
>>
>>59682826
What's the ability do?
>>
>>59682837
It's an elaborate ability so I (attempted to) code merely one of its effects - to not need recharging if Hyper Beam and its variants finishes an opponent.

I think I also tried to give it the effect of Klutz too, by putting it in the same bracket as it, a bracket meant to ignore items.
>>
>>59682840
>to not need recharging if Hyper Beam and its variants finishes an opponent.
Is this for Essentials?
You could copy the fainting check from Moxie, and replace the attack raise with whatever code resolves the Hyper Beam recharge.

Took a bit of fanagling, but I managed to achieve it! I actually used Moxie for the first run but I used the wrong bit of code, so this time I used Moxie for the template of the ability's effect.
>>
>>59682933

I don't remember if it was an RBY or Stadium thing, but I believe Hyper Beam's recharge condition was also fulfilled with breaking a substitute.

something with a lot more dungeons. or maybe a more metroidvania map? i kinda like the early-mid game part of pokemon the best, so something that makes that last as long as possible. like that bit where you have a bunch of new areas you could explore or where the otherwise mediocre tms, like water pulse, feel like amazing novel options for your team or where an early evolving otherwise bad pokemon like fearow or roselia is the powerhouse of your team. not sure how many other people appreciate that feeling like i do.

Regarding color palettes, some of this could be wrong so maybe someone can correct me but each asset gets a limit of 15 colors plus 1 more that serves as your transparent background color. Picrel is a DS sprite but I believe the same rules apply to GBA.

Whatever color is the first in the palette (in this case the light sky blue) will be treated by the game as transparent, so the sky blue won't show up in game. You then get 15 colors left for the sprite itself, and these 15 colors are shared for ALL the entities actions (in the case of a player character, standing/walking/running up, down, left, and right must share the same 15 colors)

These same rules also apply to tiles and menu icons. A house would be made up of multiple tiles, so a house could have more than 15 colors, but each individual tile making up that house is capped to 15 (because remember, the first color in your palette will be made transparent)

Personally, I would heavily recommend aseprite, it's just the most sane option. I save in pngs since jpegs mangle the coloring terribly.

Banning for offsite activity is the most unprofessional thing, it's basically what caused Relic Castle to go kaput.

>>
>>59684323
you can choose any basic pokemon as your starter - even ones that don't evolve like milktank- and whichever you choose will have perfect ivs
following pokemon
difficulty options- rather than 'easy/hard' you can set various options to decide WHAT makes it hard. you can toggle if expshare is held item or partyshare, you can toggle if npc pokemons will have better ivs and evs, maybe increaser wild pokemon held item rate or put a price tag on pokecenters and computers. you can even have nuzlocke as game option, for those of us weak willed enough to need it locked by the game.
every pokemon will be dateable, and date event differ by nature/personality rather than by pokemon type. obviously moemon.

first of all David, stop with the 3rd person bullshit. we all know it's you. come on dude.
as for the video, the fact that it portrayed incestuous rape at all is fucked up. it doesn't matter if he got punished for it in the video. making a video with that subject matter at all is twisted and nobody wants somebody capable of that in their communities. the fact that even 4chan found it over the line should tell you something. not a single person who watched that video though "oh, this is a guy who thinks raping little kids is bad" they watch it and think "this guy wants to rape little kids"

no problem, in regards to your color gradient questions, just use typical hue shifting, this is a good video if you aren't familiar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG4_X4xt46c

beyond that, there is a technical limitation on what colors can actually be displayed in game, but it's kind of pointless and not worth thinking about.

The requirement is that for the colors you use, all the RGB values that make up the color must be divisible by 8, this is true for both GBA and DS. (See picrel for one example, all 3 RGB value numbers are divisible by 8).

The reason this limitation is kind of pointless to think about is that (1) most graphics hacking tools will automatically change your rgb values to be divisible by 8 upon upload, and (2) tweaking rgb values by a few numbers to make them divisible by 8 is negligibnle on how the overall color looks, so even if you dont keep in mind the rule, you'll hardly ever be using a color that is wildly outside the scope of what the GBA/DS can display.

Like I said, this is really just a technically limitation that's barely worth keeping in mind but I also wondered about what colors I'm allowed to use and that's the answer. If you want to be autistically authentic, down to the RGB values, this is the way to do it, but I wouldn't go back through all your sprites and make sure they follow this unless you're deranged.

>it seems rather odd and cheap when multiple sprites are similarly colored
every color the gba displays on screen requires a bit of memory, cutting down on the amount of colors the GBA is showing at once is mostly for optimization
For example if I have an MC, a Professor, and a bug catcher all using the same exact 16 color palette. Then the GBA is only running 1 palette to show off all three of those sprites, which would free up some memory that can then be allocated for things like animation frames, particle effects, etc.

The story starts with Pokemon Opalo's ban. They started targeting everyone who was even slightly associated with EricLostie (which was practically all spics) and they dug up xitters for ANYTHING that could be used against them, even if the dev games themselves were clean of such things. I remember them saying that a simple one-piece swimsuit fanart of Marnie was banworthy, one that took A LOT of digging to find. It wasn't anywhere on their sites, and it wasn't even that risque, but they used the excuse of the Twitter being linked on the site even though they have never done so before.

The backlash was fast because everyone liked Elena and her games. Eventually Relic Castle, while doubling down and saying that they were right and justified, said their main-main admin will examine the game Remniscencia and handle it by xemselves.

They were also aggressively denying being racist to spics, but... come on... you guys literally started going after them because of the actions of one. What else can you call that?

If the alternative to AI was waiting God knows how many more years before we had reliable DS hacking then fuck that.

Whats more, hacking GBA has been solved for nearly a decade now and you can still count on your fingers how many hacks are actually worth playing.
Rom hacking has ALWAYS been about wading through the sea of shit to find the gems, don’t blame AI for the deluge of shit projects when we were gonna get shit projects regardless. If AI accelerates the timeline for getting some good games, then I’m all for it.

Either iv alterations shouldn't be available or ivs shouldn't exist. Having variable ivs is flavourful for playing pokemon like an rpg or challenge run, it distinguishes your mons even more. The issue real pokemon games faced is that they also want to be competitive battle games at the same time, where optimization is necessary, so they introduced caps to reduce the amount of time it takes to get optimized pokemon. Champions barely if at all suffers from their removal (setting all ivs to 32) with the only catches being trick room is a little less optimized sometimes and gyro ball isn't as powerful. Evs, post gen 2, act both as flavorful rpg elements while also being a tool of expression given how limited they are, though they have a catch of always making new party members somewhat weaker than current ones at the same level. you can either keep them or leave them, I'm playing Ghost Grey for the first time, and I'm appreciating their exclusion.

It's about the GBA-aesthetic, randomly choosing colors without a plan behind it just doesn't feel right and will stick out. But if it's as negligible as you say, then just setting up an art tool to do the job should be enough.
>>59685016

Thinking of doing Mega Evolutions for the Galar fossils. There are four Mega Stones, each corresponding to the four tops and halves. How should I approach this?
>Non-focus half fully degenerates and allows user to become a pure type or they become half ghost-type, explained by a similar phenomenon to G-Corsola, Dragapult, etc.
>Non-focus half gets converted into elemental energy and gets reshaped into a supposedly accurate body for the other half, so the mon retains its type.

In any case, their abilities are all Speed Boost variants - -vish gets Attack, -zolt gets Speed, Draco- gets Defense (its ability will randomly pick between Def & Sp.Def to raise) & Arcto- gets Special Attack

Having a look at their stats again

>-vish adds more Defense
>Arcto- contributes Sp. Atk (& some Sp. Def)
>Draco- contributes Speed

So maybe it is more logical to have abilities correspond to this. Plus making it so that Mega Dracovish won't have an Attack-boosting Mega might prove... better.

They also just run the games on the actual DS hardware that is in the 3DS
Have you never noticed how long DS games need to boot?
Install https://github.com/ZallaxDev/emerald-3ds and a VC inject of emerald and just compare the two
The dual screen emerald runs as a 3ds game while the vc inject runs as a gba game

GBA used 5bit per channel rgb, that's the only real hardware limitation the colours have. 5bit means that you need to divide the 255 channel values by 8 to get them normalized between 0-31, each. There's many ways to get them clamped to 5bit values you can google.

For tiles, the palettes almost always have a "black" for outlines and an "off-black" for drop shadows, you emulated that well in the traffic sign objects.
The off-black can also be used in shading as a generic "dark color" regardless of the hue you're working with. So, you can shade both a red and a green object with it, as long as you use it in moderation. It is also useful for outlining the "tops" or lighter parts of an object.

I don't have much advice to give you beyond that, since what you posted shows you're capable enough at emulating a style without having every single particular written down and spoonfed to you.

Good job and good luck, anon!

Mathematically speaking, there are 32^3 colors to choose from?
>"off-black"
So basically the darkest used color =/= black? Are there also multiple off-black colors when different color shades are used (e.g. green and brown in plants), or is there only one off-black per palette (e.g. one off-black being darker than the other, line with yellow)?
>So, you can shade both a red and a green object with it, as long as you use it in moderation.
In terms of adding seperation lines within an enclosed area of the sprite?

One further question to ask: Are there official sources / tutorials / leaked documents by GameFreak on how they create(d) sprites, like how they sketch out a design and translate perspectives, shades and textures to pixels? Or tutorials by unrelated artists who you'd recommend?
>>
Basically, I'm trying to balance things out by choosing one starter from each trio per Generation to appear in my game. The idea is that I balance them with three reps of each of the three main starter types.

>Gen 1: CHARIZARD
>Gen 2: Meganium
>Gen 3: Blaziken
>Gen 4: Torterra OR Empoleon
>Gen 5: Samurott OR Serperior
>Gen 6: Greninja OR Chesnaught
>Gen 7: Primarina
>Gen 8: Rillaboom
>Gen 9: Skeledirge

For the OR ones, which do you propose I pick? Be it based on preference or what makes sense.
>>
>>59691398
I realize my wording might imply that they're starters in the context of the game I'm making so I will clarify that they're all wild encounters in at least one form. So if you want to run monotype you could have three startermons.
>>
>>59691398
>gen 9
>not the cat

>>
>>59691444
My game is set on an island in the middle of fuckall so I'm picking choices that follow this logic i.e. Pokemon that are based on animals that could've gotten there somehow and Pokemon who themselves could've gotten there.
>>
>>59690867
ai slop. it's somewhat interesting in the early game but it gets quite boring by the time your starter fully evolves, feels like just waiting until i'm strong enough to progress to the next level. camera gets really bad as it goes on. pokerogue and emerald rogue 2 still clear it.
>>
>>59691398
Torterra is probably the most interesting if we're talking about typing, but Chesnaught's role is more unique as a starter. Serperior is either painfully mediocre to bad (yes worse than u-samurott) or it's incredibly one dimensional with contrary, so I wouldn't choose it unless you plan on changing it a bit. Empoleon kinda overlaps with U-Samurott and Primarina quite a bit, so I'd say Greninja's role as a fast attacker is more unique but it could steal too much of the attention.
>>

>>
>>59691648
Essentials is kind of clunky anyways, it has a certain stink that's hard to remove, is pretty laggy etc. It's definitely easier to get into than romhacking but romhacking has better results.
>>
>>59691654
I personally found Essentials as a good way to prototype. You can very quickly make something and get to playing it for testing purposes.
Start a project there, get some ideas down, don't worry about polish, then transfer as much as possible to a ROM base.
>>
>>59691654
I've only made one relatively simple game via romhacking and I remember it being a pain in the ass to work with and having to constantly troubleshoot fitting things within the memory so it would boot or not crash. Granted that was a long time ago so idk how far romhacking tools/tech have come since then. I imagine its still the best way to go about making a game if its something that's 1:1 to a baseline pokemon type game.

But for what I currently want to try its something a little less simple, like a more involved story with "cutscenes" and some more intricate mechanics - granted it'll still be amateurish dog shit by comparison. But at least personally the fan games I've played that have the same feel as what I'm going for all seem to be made in essentials and not romhacks so I'm guessing there's a reason.

@Announcements

Quick ping to let you know about a small change :nonno:

After giving it some serious thought, the rest of the team and I have decided it would be best to remove our projects from Hackdex following the recent developments regarding generative AI.
Hackdex allows the use of generative AI in any area, as long as developers disclose how, to what extent, and in which areas it was used. As you can probably guess by now, we are against this kind of use, hence our decision.

This isn't about demonizing Hackdex or anything like that. We simply don't want our projects hosted alongside others that make more or less extensive use of generative AI, or that outright lie about using it.

What does this mean for you? Nothing, really. The games will still be available for download through Discord and PokéCommunity.

So, if you no longer see Pokémon Odyssey and Pokémon Odyssey II on Hackdex, now you know why.

Thanks for reading, and have a nice day!

Given it's an AI translation, it's almost certainly an AIbro shilling a translation that wouldn't have existed anytime soon without AI support.

No, I'm just sharing an experience I enjoyed and wish others to enjoy, but maybe that is incomprehensible to some

>It's a Chinese made hack of heartgold. You basically play kantooo again but the game is not heavily inspired by the anime, the manga and by the original games still. For example, Team Rocket is now actually threatening and vicious as fuck, and the game is more narrative based and has a lot more side quests. Everything is more fleshed out
>It's not new, but it's been recently translated with IA and it's great
was this post also perhaps recently translated with "IA"

>how do you have over 7gb in hacks
16 DS ROMhacks take up 3.08GB alone.

Here's the entire list in case your or anyone is curious. I'm pretty selective, even though it sure as hell doesn't look like it, and I try not to download demos unless I find them super interesting. I didn't count the size of Pokémon fan games, since I keep them in a separate folder.
I'm always on the hunt for more ROMhacks and fan games.
>>
>>59692714
not going through KANTO a 10th time, sorry...
>>
how about this for a start of a hack: kanto gets nuked and you leave it and pick the region to move to but its only Japan based regions

how about kanto gets nuked and you defend another region from kantonian immigrants

What are some some of the better or more notable curated dex hacks? I'm getting sick of bloat.

Rom hacks almost never support transfers to official games, so you don't need everything under one roof.
Official games were always a platform in where you could use every single Pokemon up to that point.
>>
>>59692774
There's a difference between "I want to have all Pokemon be obtainable in some shape or form, transferring from other titles included" and "I WANT ALL 1025 POKEMON TO BE NATIVELY OBTAINABLE IN THE GAME, ALL CRAMMED INTO THIS ONE SINGLE REGION, AND NONE OF THEM CAN BE POSTGAME ONLY".
>>
I need more Chinese Essentials/Hacks. Don't worry I can actually read Chinese, probably.

toying with the idea of making the doc into an actual site, which would allow for things like filtering and maybe even allowing people to submit reviews.
Would there be any utility in a concept like this?
>>
>>59692774
yes, the code should have every pokemon, but the region itself having only 400 catchable mons is fair

that new one with a trailer today, epsilon, does support it apparently

Are any of the NSFW games good? As in good gameplay for a pokemon game that happen to have waifu stuff on top?
>>
>>59693034
its my turn to ask this in the next thread
>>
>>59693047
I didnt realise it was a common refrain
I also guess that means the answer is none of them

>>59693034
You're better off taking an existing game and editing the trainers to be nude.

Didn't realize that there were actually Japanese people out there who play Essentials games. You know, since they're a bit prideful of this kinda stuff, you know what I'm saying?

overworld pixel sex or Full CG image like a VN?
>>
>>59692920

>>
>>59693053
You know how it is my mans. When you're trying to promote a Pokey to the man game, the best spots to promote that kind of stuff are places that are too prude for NSFW. And when you do go to places with NSFW indie games like LewdCorner or F95, most of the people there would rather do their original I.P., or if they do parody, they overdo that shit and sacrifice story, relying on the I.P. a bit too heavily and just make every girl a one-dimensional bimbo with tits that are obviously far too oversized even if you quadruple their canonical bust size., or they're afraid of Pokemon bringing the DMCA hammer down, or a mix of two of these.

That being said, what if I aimed to do it someday? After I'm done with my own sfw projects of course. And maybe only ever post it on this thread.

How do you debug when making romhacks? There is no way you would just recompile and run it every time to see if it works, right??
>>
>>59693217
I could imagine one that focused on just a few girls and had CGs for them throughout the game being good
like the dawn vn but with actual pokemon gameplay
though like >>59693231 said I feel like most people wouldn't want to put in the effort for that when they could make their own stuff that doesn't get risk of getting nuked
