after dropping it 18 years ago shortly after it released, i just finished unleashed via UnleashedRecomp and figured i'd share some thoughts here instead of /v/ or /vr/ since they don't care...coming back to it, i didn't hate it as much as i did years ago. there's a lot of good in the game, but there's also a lot of bad that nearly cancels it all out.>aestheticsthis game is more beautiful than i remember. i'd say one of the best looking 7th gen games period. every area has its own themes, barely any reuse anywhere between them. the little hub cities have tons of character. seeing them at night is just so cozy. you want to live in them. the music is...OK. not great, not horrible. only track i even remember is rooftop run, arguably the most notable level from the game (since it was in generations too) but honestly it only got worse as the game went on. the island hub used gamelan which was a pleasant surprise. the end game boss music was dogshit. completely forgettable EDM dubstep shit. during the final part where you're super sonic flying through the air dodging rocks and picking up rings ala s3k's doomsday zone, i couldn't help but laugh at how shit the music is compared to s3k's.>gameplaythe day stages comprise of several set-pieces all strung together in various ways/lengths: free-running, quickstepping with the bumpers, automated 3D going through loops and shit, 2D with light platforming, automated grinding, automated grinding with quickstep, probably one or two others i'm missing. if you've played a boost era game you know what to expect. you either enjoy them or don't. it is a little too on the automated side for the most part but you still need to memorize them well if you want S rank.(1/?)

I've seen some Japanese people complain about the Knuckles Clan/Echidna Clan change. I didn't know it was important to them. Also, the pronunciation of GUN, which English dubs never got right, now the English mispronunciation is used in Japanese as well for movie synergy. I'm also happy to see them talk about the removal of ages from the profiles, I have no clue why you fags are so insistent on defending that particular bastardization of Sonic Channel whenever I complained about it over the years.

>>586090726biggest problems with day stages are the lengths, QTEs, and fuckass dogshit deaths. most of the stages go on for way too long. no other way to put it. at their fastest most of them take minimum 4 minutes because there's just so many automated set pieces. the QTEs suck, they're just lazy game design. thankfully if you fail most of them you just take a different route (later stages you need to succeed or you die). and them the fuckass deaths. there are A LOT of them. biggest ones being when you're boosting and you just fall off the stage into a killplane. could be homing on enemies and you ran out, could be you boosted too many times in a freerun section. THIS is the real difficulty of the game, avoiding these janky fucking deaths. they only increase in frequency as the game goes onnight stages...coming back to them i didn't hate them as much as i had before. Tbh the bmup aspect of the game isn't that bad. it's not really boring; if you level up Combat you consistently get new moves to try out. it's a little on the easy side. some sections are a little gauntlet-y and require you to be defensive since there's no health pickups for it's not that bad. so the levels alternate between bmup sections and platforming sections. jumping off platforms, poles, tightrope walking. it's all...OK i guess. most of my deaths here came from no depth perception indicators e.g. shadows when you're jumping onto a platform. so many times i over/underestimated a jump and died. this is just lazy game design not to include something. and much like the day stages, they are way too long. they routinely take 20+ minutes. were they half that they'd be more tolerable but the lengths as is make them slogs to get through(2/?)

I was reading the Narusaku HOAD today and it kind of feels fitting to what's going on now.
>>586090958the game got worse with its bullshit as it went on, culminating in the final level eggmanland. just so many bullshit deaths off into the aether again because you blasted at the wrong time. then there's this section where you're running on a conveyer belt against it, there's energy beams you have to jump over and there's no good indication how close/far you are so you constantly jump into them and when you're knocked down you fall back further on the belt, many times to your death. most cancerous sections of the game. not fun at all.>bossesthe bosses range from tolerable to putrid dogshit. funnily enough the tolerable ones are mostly the night ones where they are proper action bosses. but again in both stages they take way too long. with the night stages you're often twiddling your thumbs waiting for the boss to finish up with its animations so you can do an action. the day stages are lazy horseshit. they're all autorun sections where you have to slowly dodge lasers coming at/toward you until it's your scheduled time to hit. no skill at all, just giant timesinks.the final eggman boss is actually probably the most enjoyable boss since the downtime is kept to a minimum. you finish him off with QTEs though (just like all the other bosses). 1st gaia in retrospect is OK, you have to get good at timing these punches to fireballs which was frustrating at first. perfect gaia is dogshit. the fight is a visual mess. when you're attacking the dragon heads it's hard to tell if you're going to take damage from the rocks, then you also have gaia attacking you which further muddies up the screen...just an all-round unpleasant not fun final boss.another thing i hated that didn't fit above: there's a couple falling sections ala casinopolis in SA1 but the controls are very clunky/unresponsive and it's a pain in the ass to move out of the way of obstacles. step backward in that regard. also the 2 flying stages. pure QTE cancer that should have been cut.(3/?)
