I don't think Dietrich's story is satisfying at all and I don't why people like it. Dietrich himself doesn't have any motivation besides wanting to fight and only makes a handful of decisions, saving Esmeralda (whim), entering the games and fighting Mars (fight autism) and fighting Cetus (fight autism). The rest of his story is driven by Fabio who runs around playing with machines so he can lore dump. These scenes could play out in any order and the result would be the same. At the end Dietrich decides he doesnt actually want to fight Mars to the death at all so he gives up so he doesn't die. There's also like 2 scenes where he interacts with Lyrah in which nothing important happens.
