Sleepy
Highlander 2 isn't canon.
What're they building in there? What the hell are they building in there? They have subscriptions to these magazines, never wave when they pass by...They're hiding something from the rest of us.
bumpI worry how you gaylords will stay alive while I'm out of town.

>to make barracks, you need a blacksmith, and an alchemist, and a minimum of 20 slavesDamn this game is complex.I'm starting to suspect that Warcraft 3 with its "start the game, immediately build barracks" was actually the outlier compared to most strategy games.
>barracks requires an alchemist, then a blacksmith>all these buildings have costs that go in the thousands, and need all three ressources>barrack let you train a swordsman who costs barely more than a slave, and has piss-poor statsWhat is it with old RTS having insanely costly buildings but cheap units? I feel like I see that often, and it seems to go against what I saw in the Age Of games, or the breast milk thieves' own RTS.
>"light cavalry" has way better stats than the warriorFuck kind of warriors are these, clearly not the hulking brute with a two-handed axe.
Light cavalry indeed, these assholes have 0 armor.Like, none as all, any damage goes through them like a lubrified strap-on goes in an anus.
what the fuck is that, there's this strange thing in thereIt looks like a gnome house
>warrior comes out>just a faglord with a sword and a shirtAre you serious? I thought warrior meant a professional, a full-time raider/soldier/town guard. Not some peasant with a sword. That dude deals decent damage (8 dmg), but has low hitpoints (only 150 HP), and his sight is bad (next to the range). And worse than everything, it's SLOW. The warrior will only walk to his destination and start swinging lazily at his target.
I'm getting Old School RuneScape/Dark Age of Camelot vibes.I never played Dark Age of Camelot in my life, but if there was a RTS based on it, I imagine it looking like this.
>do all kind of very expensive research, cost in the hundreds>+1 damage>5% damage reduction for melee and ranged damageSince archers deal 5 damages, I'm not even sure it does anything.
>game has collectable cards>one of them shows the GiantWhat the fuck.
So, according to the game, light cavalry counter archers, but I have no idea if it's an ideal thing, like if they get bonus damage like in AoE2, or if it's a soft counter, like they counter archers only because they're faster.
HEYA LET'S KRUMP T'ESE GITS
KILL EVERYONE
>units get bloodier as they get hurtNEAT why don't we get that in more games nowaday?
>keep: mostly wooden structure, looks like a town hall>barracks: some stone structure, surrounded by a wooden palissade>castle: full stoneI like the escalade.
>you're ready for combat!Yeah, about that... the enemy already lies in the ground, dead.
I'm not finding any option to heal my units, that's a shame.God I miss Battle Realms. Love that game.
>towers have 1 000 hitpoints>catapult deal 30 damage pointsUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURGH
>defenses are downKILL THEMSKIN 'EM ALIVEBOIL THEMEAT THEMWE WILL OVERPOWER THEM, WE WILL LEAVE NONE ALONE, THE CODEX CALLS THIS MANEUVER THE STEEL RAIN
>dead unit decompose into skeletonsOh nice. Warcraft 3 and AoE2 both had this, but AoE2 replaced it to instead have the units sinking in the ground. It's not a change I like.
And there we go. That was just the tutorial.

Total War seems to be having a modding revival, with all the new M2ex stuff, removing unit, faction, province limits.Dunno if there are enough modders left for older games willing to revamp their mods with these changes in mind. This stuff would have been great a decade ago, that's for sure.

>>585475082No, that's the remake.With Abominable Intelligence icons.
>>585475198Oh... I have not been fallowing the news, drama, I though they added some sort of separate shitty remake and pulled that. I don't play Shogun, so I didn't know. This is much worse, it's kind of why I only rely on gog or piracy these days, nothing like steam or other stuff with servers and forced updates. That they break mods for decades old games is criminal.
>>585475407>I though they added some sort of separate shitty remake and pulled thatThat's exactly what happened. And I'm surprised it's "Shogun 2" and not "Shogun 2 Definitive Edition".
>>585475659kek, storm trooper looking nigga
But anyway, this shit is a good example why I dislike Steam and it's derivatives, forced online, forced updates, games as a services and so on. Also, these days games keep getting dlcs and updates for like decade+, in some cases, you just can't mod in peace, or just play at your own pace, unless they maybe support legacy version, but still. Devs need to learn to fuck off after x amount of years and make something else, especially if there is strong modding scene.

I've been seeing a bit of stuff about people hooking up LLMs to play civ. It seems like a fun idea, I'm thinking of trying it but I haven't crossed that line of letting the fucking thing run on my computer and don't know if I will though many people smarter than me seem to be ok with it.Mostly I want it to act more like a human. I'm drafting up some ideas on how to do that, like having a set of traits, exposed and hidden, which might be the same, but could also lead to things like acting forgiving but holding a grudge.Probably Civ5, if I do at all, though I haven't played it in a million years. I'm for sure interested in getting behavior that isn't just how many bonuses they have or just being unbeatable fully optimized which is boring.

>>585691328Alright, I can work with that. The biggest powerspike you'll get as a new player is getting used to direct control. With tanksvstanks especially. That sort of stuff.>panzershreks/bazookas whateverDesperation weapons or something if there's an armored car trying to run you over most of the time. If it's early war you should have at rifles and at guns. If it's later you at least should have a long pz4.In short do like a couple of cheapest inf you get to hold the objective, do a tank to bully his tank(s) and then do arty of some description to bully his arty and inf. Repeat the cycle until his tickets give up.
>>585692019how can i tell when the enemies start sending better tanks on conquestis it related to the stages? cause i noticed if i go stage 2 in research right away the enemies field tanks asap, usually they didn't when i stayed stage 1also sometimes u just don't have tanks or your tanks are knocked out, i could do nothing against the T-34s and shermans, they killed my 10.5cm arty then i legit couldn't do anything, try to sneak in for at nade they insta kill my inf needed panzerfausts or smthi forgot that they apparently spawn in armored cars sometimes, should have chcked that
>>585692239also i play war thunder ik about weak spotsproblem is my 7.5cm with HEAT couldn't pen t-34 ANYWHERE from the frontand i had nothing to flank with, AT rifle also doesn't do shit to it panzerfaust at least might have saved it
>>585692239>is it related to the stages?Yes.>short pz4 struggles against t-34>i play war thunder Then you should know how well heat performs against sloped stalinium armor. You want marders, long stugs, long paks, F2s, flanking 50mm pz3s etc.>AT infantryThey're good for early war but the problem is medium+ at rifles can't pen most things anywhere and bazookas have bad range. >>585729498if you're not balancing production logistics things and you have finite resources to keep track of you really shouldn't be a realtime game.
>>585729498Usually as fun as getting your teeth pulled thru your asshole since the game is fighting its own design. But some games do it alright, battlezone, spellforce.
>>585729498they're a nice change of pace
>>585731262They honestly can be. When done right, as in not like in related.
>>585729498I like them in SC2 for the most part but it depends on how many of them are an if the units or heroes are fun to use. No builds have sort of a structural problem where too often they are extremely slow and campy because there's either no penalty for taking long or the scenario out right requires you to play slow to conserve your units.
>>585729498Depends if there is healing available in the game, but usually these missions become just "move forward, heal, move forward, heal". They're very hard to make right.
>>585732303I really liked the final hero mission and the one with 2 Lucifers.

Can someone explain what the new stellaris thing is talking about? I tried to read it but I just glaze over it with their confusing business speak phrasing. It can convert people that aren't within your borders like dominion from a magical entity?
>>585791534Have you done psionic ascension lately? It’s like auras but for ethics and those within the aura will have their pops convert into that ethic
>>585792212That's interesting. Kind of forces military conflict naturally then (and purges). Trying to think how I could use it to my advantage for subterfuge. Criminal empires might be fun
>>585792478Theoretically if you form an ideology of your own you could be able to push it into other empires and *not* be forced into conflict because of their ideology imposing on you, but if you don’t care about making an ideology and your neighbor does idk how you defend yourself without purging them. Dlc seems neat but I also think it has the potential to be really disruptive and annoying
>>585792667The fact it works on machine consciousness too makes it seem like it might be too annoying lol. We'll see. Being a diplomatic powerhouse and converting people to your friendly empire as the galactic emperor seems neat for at least one playthrough
>>585792992At least for gestalts a foreign ideology just increases deviancy which is usually quite easy to deal with, and gestalts forming their own “ideology” get to choose any ethic they want, but I believe the tradeoff is going to be that they will have to wait later to form one, putting them on the backfoot a bit
>>585793223Ok that seems pretty reasonable.I just realized the spy network is definitely going to get some things to go along with it too. Alright I'm sold on it, seems very neat.
>>585778463Not true. They forbade punishing criminals or killing livestock as in sacrifice it in fire but rarely forbade it in war or siege conditions. Saladin himself used fire to break crusaders in Battle of Hattin for example. Abbasids also legitimately and often used crude oil or tar filled ceramic projectiles.

>>585805986Couldn't you convert shit and play mostly like you would otherwise in that one?
>>585806810You could convert villagers to repair rams but couldn't build normal buildings because they didn't give you a lot of wood at the start. There is a trick though, you get your villagers to chop trees until their inventory is full and have them build a farm, they all automatically deposit the wood when they finish building the farm so you can get enough wood using that trick to build a lumbercamp and build the normal way, but it's easier to just do the scenario without making an economy.

>>585827574>>585827915>republicExtremely shallow, buggy and needed a ton more time to cook but otherwise amazing idea. Half the game you're trying to campaign against the current government using followers that either appeal to charm, money or force (or any combination of those) while making your political party identity going as far right or left as you like. Then it branches out from a single city to the entire country as you lead to a full blown revolution, political one, so no tanks and shit on the streets. And not really communist as in soviet russia. More along the lines of a western socialist country in the 80-90s so no warsaw pact hanging above your head.>>585827915But there is a central figure, just, most don't recognize it, recognize it fully and haven't since big m. >>585835071Mostly a hodgepodge of custom behaviours and improvements for the AI lords with some new ones added in I've collected and kitbashed over the years. Couple of other tweaks like apothecaries healing troops or ox haulers for iron. Always found it irritating in SHC how each AI has a strict defined power ceiling and when you know it it's not hard to stall with a few dozen crossbows, boom past them and trivialize the rest of it. imho bit more interesting when the wolf starts sending escalating waves of horse archers your way instead of sitting in his large castle variant with 12 crossbows split between 15 towers and that's 3 hours in.
>>585836415>apothecaries healing troopsOh, the fanpatch. Yeah, that was pretty much mandatory.>Always found it irritating in SHC how each AI has a strict defined power ceiling and when you know it it's not hard to stall with a few dozen crossbows, boom past them and trivialize the rest of itI don't know about about skirmish to fully understand that, but I watched a lot of computer vs computer fights, and I always found it a bit odd how the AI doesn't seem to escalate attacks, and most AIvsAI games seem to turn into checkmates where nothing moves forward and nobody wins.
>>585836727A fork of that I've tweaked further and added some more things to, yes. They do escalate but only up to what's set in their .aic entry. Coupled with their .aiv entry their ceiling is always the same. They'll never make a castle bigger or different variant to what's specified in their .aiv for example. They will never build one more house past x for another. That can be ramped up or otherwise changed. You can also set so they have varied and (somewhat) flexible waves, they will send (more) tunnelers or assassins if you have moats past a certain value on the map etc. Makes it less of a solved game imho.

Game for t'is feel?
>>585934463It couldn't have been. Krauts wanted a speedyboy that could pin enemies on bridges and shit, and burgers wanted a brick capable of literally withstanding a tactical nuke dropped on top of it because ivan had one. Krauts wanted a small cannon because APFSDS and burgers wanted a large smoothbore one that doubled as launcher because of course they did and they were toying with the idea of cannon fired missiles at that time because ivan was too. Krauts wanted a reliable diesel engine with low footprint and burgers wanted something that could potentially take rocket fuel (something M1 abrams turbines are fully capable of doing btw) because fuel economy is a meme, right. Then there was a small novels worth of issues from metric vs whatever US measures use at that particular moment, which led to a direct split with two separate prototypes. Twice, I believe. It was a good exercise that lead to most modern MBTs in the west but utterly doomed from the start.

>start some harassment on the enemy Lord with a sapper>it's the Abbot>despite having a morale malus, his monk slaughter my sapperEither sappers are shit or monks just have autistic strength. The former is unlikely since they're so expensive, so I'm going with the latter.
>>585947105The guy that the movie that guy is based on is based on
Five sappers make short work of even a square tower.Relatively short work, so far it's easy. It'll be a lot less easy when they're filled with ballistas and manned properly.>>585947394Oh, Baldwyn? But he wasn't a leper IRL.
SINCE WHEN CAN MONKS RUN
Tip: put healers in attack mode so that they actively run toward the wounded to heal them. By default, they're in "hold position" mode and won't move.
Harassing with sappers only work so far, and since I'm focusing on archers/monks/pikemen, I decide to add some defenses to my mix.So let's manufacture swords and start training swordsmen.
Abusing the Abbot's lack of archers, I run around his castle and destroy his cathedral. Then, I sneak around his castle, and I destroy his granary.I expect the loss in popularity to make him spiral into a debt spiral, but surprisingly, it fails. The AI in Stronghold isn't that good, but it's excellent at rebuilding if you don't finish it off, the Abbot later rebuilds his food production.
Seeing the Abbot started recruiting archers, I hire engineers and have them build manlets. My plan is to use the Tyler1 to cover up my archers while they snipe enemy archers, then use sappers to destroy enemy production to earn time while I keep building up.Selling bread, stone and iron finally assured me a proper income of gold, which I convert into wood, but I'm on the clock here.
>>585947625Baldwin.4
Sadly, I dilly dally for too long, and the Abbot finally has some defenses. All his towers now have ballistas, and they're manned by skilled engineers, who manage to shoot my sappers that I believed to be hidden at the bottom of the tower. Also there are hidden fire traps, but these already burnt out when I took the screenshot.>>585949042Oh, he really existed.Neat.
>>585949153Yes, the most famous king of jerusalem really existed. Imagine that.
At that moment, I panic. The map has a huge swamp between both castles, so my usual plan of making trebuchets and sieging the castle from a safe distance if not an option, and enemy ballistas have superior range. So I'm at a big disadvantage, and I'm not quite sure how to proceed, so I decide to use the bédouins troops, and hire demolishers to take down the enemy towers. My plan is essentially to destroy the towers, then storm the castle.
The Bédouins are a new mercenary camp exclusive to Definitive Edition, and they add a lot of very expensive siege units, such as a heavy camel, a light cavalry, and demolishers, anti-building infantry with two health bars: one resistant to arrows, and their actual health.I send a dozen of these expensive mercenaries to take down the enemy towers. In retrospect, I could've tried to bumrush the towers with battering rams, but I think the ballistas ignore the pierce armor of units, so I think the rams would've expired nonetheless.
Sim City 4 has been modded to run in DX11, no more voodoo bullshit needed.https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/37687-scd3d11-dll/
With the towers gone and my mercenaries lying in the sand, I send my monks and pikemen to storm the castle and take down the Abbot.Or rather, I send my monks to destroy the castle and cause as much damage as possible, while my pikemen go for the Abbot. This might've been a mistake: the pikemen have such abysmal attack that it takes them a while to take down the Abbot, while the monks, who are the opposite, easily destroy most of the castle's buildings and even start to destroy the walls themselves out of boredom.
Yup. He's dying. Slowly.Still better than what I'd do to him otherwise.

>>586028292I have an idea for a civ 3/5 fusion in my head with civ switching on era change
>>586028939I think switching civ bonuses at era changes makes more sense than changing identity + bonuses. Either make identity completely up to choice, or tie it to big events like migrations.
>>585950312The last good simcity
>>586030908my idea is that instead of actually switching, you choose another civ and gain their bonuses as well, but only from that era onso each civ has unique units/building/bonuses for each era, but you can only get the first era bonuses for your starting civ. in the second era, you get the unique second era bonuses from your starting civ, and you keep their first era bonuses. but the civ you "switch" to, you only get their second era bonuses (and their third, once you get there), and so onit's a genius idea and I will definitely 100% for sure make a game like this, no doubt
>>586028292Do you have the money? I sure as hell don't. That said, one man with skills could make a strategy game. Maybe it even could get popular, like War of Dots.

>>585830084Yeah. Dropped MoW:AS 2 because the skirmish AI stops working mid game every single game and the mods that are good are designed for MP. Shit is clunky. The balance in the base game is weird also and you have to be right in people's face to engage them.Barely even an RTS.
>>586028939I don't want an entire empire changing its architecture from marble to yurt huts overnight if there's little to explain it. I'd only accept a version of switching where there is a unique crisis for whichever civ you're transitioning to. Then at the end of the crisis, you'd get a either a single synergy, up to your entire empire being changed depending on how well you handled the crisis, and which side you've supported. So for example, if you wanted to play as Rome in the next age, but wanted a apex era building from another civ, you'd pick that other civ to be an opposing faction you'd have to deal with through events, quests, assuaging them with city governors aligned to them, or war. I imagine they being like the familial factions in Old World
>population spread over the grid, not just lumped in the city center>population has very simple demographics like culture and religion>combat hurts tile yields and can create population movement through either direct devastation or low food/resources>population migration can destabilize a region or change its makeup à la migration period barbariansThat's like my big change idea for a civ clone.

It's all coming back to me, but the place I got filtered years ago is where you go from bartering to currency so let's see if I can remember how to do the transition when it comes time.
>>586070620Just slam heavy agricultural levies to make dosh, the farmers are so few and civilization points on crops make them rich otherwise.
>>586070620We have our first huts and the formation camp in the southeast is about to sent out to hunt on the overworld.>>586070992Got it. This is the tutorial world but I'll have to remember that on an official server.
>>586071754>lose some guys to cattleEmbarrassing. Also that's the end of the tutorial which means I'm in free play mode for now but I'll probably switch to multiplayer if any of the servers are relatively young. Someone give me a civ name.
>>586072303>Couvrez ce sein que je ne saurais voir !Always love a bit of untranslated French I know it's a Molière quote but holy fuck it made me realize my French has atrophied way more than I had thought.
>>586073059I'm on server 4 and rolled a pretty comfy starting location. Time to see how long I can remember to keep logging in.
>>586067191Yes.Please do so, we are dying.
>>586075301Wow I didn't know this game was kinda pretty.
>>586076345I think next update will have a 3D mode (at least I've seen 3D in game images) so it might look even better.
>>586075301>manufacturing ticks are 90 IRL minutes long on the serverI forgot how slow things can be in the persistent server game mode.
I've noticed a lot of 4Xs, particularly indie ones, go really hard on the exterminate part of the equation while the first 3 Xs suffer. Stuff like 100+ pieces to customize your units and whole tech trees dedicated to unlocking them, but 3 buildings with 3 direct upgrades each. Explore is gotten out of the way as fast as possible and is solely a fog of war, expand and exploit are basically rolled into one from the sheer lack of depth in the economy, and exterminate is about slamming doomstacks against doomstacks in massive consume-or-die wars. There's no real *reason* to go to war, you're never hurting for resources since they're functionally infinite and there's only 2 of them, it's solely about smashing together your min-maxed toy soldiers. The only ones I've encountered that give as much care to the first 3 Xs as much as the last are Stellaris, Space Empires 5, GalCivs that aren't 3, and...somehow fuckin modded HOI4 I guess.
>>586094586Exploring is fun until the player memorizes spawn patterns, expanding can be gamed by going for chokepoints, exploiting can be solved by build orders, so exterminating is the one that's easiest to work on since it's purely tactical fuckery that AI can be made good at.
>>5860962681. Who the fuck is memorizing worldgen algorithms?2. I wouldn't say chokepoints being gamed is a noteworthy problem, it's just a different flavor of minmaxing. If preemptively sealing off a chokepoint completely kneecaps expand, then there's not much expand in the first place.3. A variety of differing conditions majorly blunts standardized set-and-forget build orders. 'Building X can only be placed on area Q' is already a wrench in there.4. I have to agree with you here. I don't doubt that making an AI that can handle 150 ship components is a lot easier than making one that can actually understand 'Building X can only be placed on area Q' and *not* catastrophically shit itself.Ultimately I think everything comes down to that last point. The other problems don't matter and aren't even really problems at all. Everything could've been summed up with 'None of it matters because we can't get the AI to use it'.
>>586091831I forgor the early objectives are just "get a rate of +1 for [resource]" so we've discovered Sedentism and are working on the next step.
>>586099857>4. I have to agree with you here. I don't doubt that making an AI that can handle 150 ship components is a lot easier than making one that can actually understand 'Building X can only be placed on area Q' and *not* catastrophically shit itself.A stereotypical AI buff is free resources every few minutes or every age up, and it's the easiest to get the AI to spend them on units to fight not to mention the place most visible to the player so they feel challenged.
Thinking of taking the day off work today, i don't wanna see a single person. I just want to be alone and managing a colony, which one should i play for this feel?

>>586067191What are ROTK games?
>>586099857Abusing worldgen is pretty standard fare in say civ or stellaris. Advice about grabbing your guaranteed habitables or memorizing events or finding other continents for more luxuries are pretty common for a reason. Even really basic stuff like do you explore north or south can be meta gamed let alone more complex cross ocean (or other barrier) exploration that AI isn't really cable of fundamentally understanding on a deeper level. But to the point at large there's many problems with exploration being big thing. Static map's can only be explored once, some RNG maps don't really matter what they contain where exactly because of static resources etc.The fundamental problem with exploration is that it tends to be in direct conflict with the rest of the game. If you make exploration "bigger" you make things like enemies further away and increase the RNG which leads to wilder swings between good and bad map rolls. You can't really solve the first issue in particular, if you put more distance between your enemies then you often either trivialize combat or expansion or both. Infinite space means either choice of where to your cities doesn't matter because you just want 500 of them or it means the map is going to wind up pretty much empty, large space also creates problems with units because now they have to be faster and see further to be usable but then what's the point of making the map so big if your units just have double vision and double speed? Exploration as a game phase is supposed to just be the start, it's there to give a random element to the build and so that you have something to do and express your skills with while you only have few units. Exploration is there to balance out RNG, if exploring is fun that probably means there's very high map RNG which tends to be bad for the rest of the game.

>>586075962Well, I was more looking for recommendations. I've never played those but I'm interested and wanted to know which one is the best of the bunch. I'm coming from pdx games and total war, and I'm looking for something in between those somehow. I'm getting the feeling that I'm barking up the wrong tree here though.
>>586154840Did they added all the promised professions like the organ trading stuff?>>586156796>I'm coming from pdx games and total war, and I'm looking for something in between those somehow. Then go to /vst/, this is more for 4X and RTS games than map painters(ignore shitllaris, that's because some past drama and selfpreservation).
>>586157027I have no idea since I stumbled on it like a week ago and can't put it down. Haven't seen organ trading so guess not? There's guncrafting, farming, farming fish/rats, making drugs, water...
>>586157938>Haven't seen organ trading so guess not?Look at the starting professions. The ones on the right side have a few that are "working in progress" or something like that. You will see that their stuff doesn't show up currently ingame.

>>586077569IMO the new update makes the game look worse based on the screenshots we've been shown. A bit disappointing because I really like the way the game looks.
>>586206569I'm not Spiderfag.
>>586213246You're getting there, sister. So what's this ymir all about? I've seen it mentioned but haven't tried it myself. If you had to compare it to something, what does it play like the most?
>>586214148It's closest to Lands of Lords considering the dev made the game after getting pissed off at the LoL dev's direction but I'm not sure you've heard of that if you don't know what Ymir is, so another way to think about it is the map tiles of Sim City 4 in a persistent server but with human players controlling the different towns and free form diplomacy and nation building. There's combat and invasion and shit and an age/tech progression, but it's fairly slow since it's supposed to be up 24/7. An example is that building a house takes about 9 minutes and resource gathering happens in 90 minute ticks so it's something you check in on instead of playing for a few hours straight, but there is a single player mode if you wanted to fast forward.
>>586215412Way you describe it reminds me of old browser evony just without other people or a cash store.
