I did another playthrough of Romancing SaGa 3This time I picked Sara and used a team full of mages: Undine, Bai Meiniang, Boston, Charl, Elephant. I've played this game a lot but this was the first time I got much use out of spell fusion and multi-magic (spells that require multiple characters to cast and can only be activated in commander mode). In the final battle I used special weapon techs to buff my casters. With enough buffs the magic damage formula scales upwards sharply, reaching the 9999 damage ceiling. I also got 18mp on the elephant for Dragon Descent.My team won too easily, so afterwards I loaded a midgame save and rushed to the final dungeon. Skipping optional quests and useful gear made the fight a lot more satisfying.Now I think I've done just about everything in this game.Some overly specific gameplay notes:- Character creation: Sara w/ fighter + martial arts for more hp. I gave her fire magic, though she didn't use it much.- Fullbright can be recruited early if you start the business minigame and immediately forfeit. But you get Robin/Herman/Undine/Boston early so I barely got any use out of Fullbright. Robin solos early fights with tornado and you can stun/sleep Undine and Volcano to make instant death attacks connect.- Characters like Boston and Charl will split their attacks between physical and magical in commander mode, even if you remove all skills- Some characters normally use physical attacks in commander mode but they can still participate in fusion spells (and level up that way)- Normally when you input an attack and end the battle before the character moves, the weapon type is considered 'used' and has a chance to level up. However, fusion spells must actually be used to count.- To cast 3-person spells you need your spellcasters in positions 1/4/5. But you don't need to follow the layout that's shown when you acquire the spell; your sun magic user can be in position 1, 4, or 5.

Sometimes I would build up formation tech points before switching to Seer.- Buffs degrade each turn but they also can be stacked. The fixed action order battle modes ensure that buffers act before attackers. After several rounds of Acuity and Paean of Victory characters can hit 9999 damage. Undine even hit 9999 damage without Shadow Servant (I got the second runic staff on that file).- I could have kept Robin on the team and used doppelslasher with the borrowed buffed magic stat, but I wanted to use magic attacks this playthroughIn Sara's final boss fight:- Essentially it's the normal battle system with bonuses. Having an extra character throwing healing items from offscreen makes things a lot easier.- You don't get the party healing + revival that you normally get in commander mode. Even in Genbu formation you don't get any healing.- Formation tech points sometimes don't increase- The Flame Mantle burns through the wearer's MP- Hasten Time does cancel the enemy's turn if you act first, but it doesn't affect the turn order of the next turn. Best used at 1mp.- Buffs and magic shields are erased by Eclipse and Wings of Light. If you buff up after Demonic Wings you can rush down the main body's hp, ideally reaching the final phase where you can set up again.- I managed to switch to Genbu formation mid fight and cast Galactic Rift a couple times, but the Tiger formation is much better for defense. In the final phase I switched to Desert Lance so a tank could draw hits. The commander mode first strike bonus usually let me bypass fatal mirror.Overall it was different enough from previous playthroughs because of my mage team and Sara's final boss fight. Worth trying for the small percentage of players who have already done a standard hasten time playthrough and Mikhail commander mode playthrough and still want more.
