citing youtube, the coin toss was the iq test everyone failed. of course there is no actual coin toss, but people that call Simon retarded for thinking this way would themselves fail pic related. throughout the game we consistently follow the copies of Simon; from their perspective, with the extreme circumstances they are in added on top, it's really not surprising for them to think and act in the way they did. it's much more difficult to reason about a situation from the first person point of view, especially when you were suddenly put in an unfamiliar, post apocalyptic scenario
Catherine apologists also miss that she did in fact lie to Simon at the very end, as there was no reason to have the upload and launch tied to a single button, much less on a timer, as it just increases the chances of things going wrong. she was aware of Simon's misconception, and used it to make sure the ark would be launched no matter what. her trying to deflect with
    >b-but i explained it to you!!!

Simon at this point didn't really have full and proper context for what was going on. If he had all the facts and was able to face reality properly then generating a clone to go do his job for him would be fine but they didn't really have time.
Instead the psychotic bitch continuously lies and only when the "original" simon is sitting near comatose in the chair does she reveal to the new clone what happened.

The game's plot is so demented and frightening only because Simon never really gets a chance to fucking breathe and come to terms with his new reality

    >>

Yes but a replication isn't you, it's a distinct separate entity that is the same as you.
You can't control or inhabit that consciousness because it's physically separate from your brain, the object that is actively creating and maintaining your own consciousness.
You're supposing the old Tesla idea that you consciousness is a phenomenon that isn't directly associated with you or your brain, and that your brain or a mechanical facsimile of your brain is receiving it as some sort of broadcast.
That's not how it works; no ones ever observed a consciousness isolated from hardware.

As an idea. Each time you lose consciousness and then regain it by sleeping and waking up, are you the same consciousness or a different one that has all the previous consciousnesses memories and experiences? How would you know?

    >>
    >>750753407
You could theoretically slowly replace someone's neurons with functionally identical artificial equivalents as the existing neurons naturally die over time, and hopefully the brain will seamlessly adapt, so you could ship of Theseus someone into having an artificial brain, but that'd be a very very slow process that would have to start early and take over a hundred years to complete. Even then, that's still distinct from a digital copy that resides as ones and zeroes in a computer, and copying such artificial brain into a computer will run into the same issues as the physical matter is left behind.

The original Ark project was plagued by retards killing themselves right after being scanned to "win the coin toss". The complete breakdown of the installation was due to suicide cults and literal paste eaters.
    >>750750243
You are already closely cooperating with another person since your brain has two hemispheres. You also already run predictive models and gaslight yourself into believing things. Close cooperation and communication after complete separation would minimize drift because drift of consciousness is already somewhat self-correcting by necessity.

Alright then how do we become conscious beings in the first place during fetal development? What structure creates 'you' and locks 'you' into that specific brain forever? If stem cells can become consciousness, and repair brain damage without the person ceasing to be the same person why can't artificial components that behave the exact same way do it too? What about the new neurons your brain creates until full maturity? I assume you experience a continuous stream of consciousness interrupted only by sleep or being knocked the fuck out and then when you wake back up you still experience being you and don't just fucking die every time. At least, that's how I experience reality.

    >>

    You're right.
    However.
What you imagine this allows is that I can create an idle duplicate of you who I will call Anon B in a distant location I will call location B, you being Anon A in location A.
When I switch you off in location A and simultaneously switch on Anon B at B, you do not leap to location B. You are asleep at location A.

This is the trick the game pulls. It does this once, at the beginning. And when this takes place, you are actually changing from one character to another. The real Simon went home and ate dinner and later died offscreen.
    >>
    >>750752798
Technically you are not the biological matter in your brain, you are a kind of circuit of electric signals housed in and generated by said biological matter. An "electro-consciousness" as it were. Theoretically, and this is a BIG theoretically, there might be some way (that we will most assuredly never figure out) to migrate that electrical current to another structure (either bio-engineered or mechanical) created to house and sustain it. The big if, of course is how do you move a collection of electric impulses from point A to point B without it losing the specific form/pattern it has that makes you "you" aka continuity of consciousness. And even if you could solve this problem, how do you keep the new "housing" for your electro-consciousness from changing that pattern, since are consciousness's are constantly being changed due to chemical and other inputs the physical brain and body generate. Would your consciousness "break down" without these inputs? Would it cease to work or resemble a human consciousness? We just don't know enough about how the brain works to know.

I agree with that. Two existing copies does not allow you to swap between the two, implying some sort of relationship with location is involved. Or that an exact copy is impossible so the issue never becomes an issue, but that's a moot point because then the debate becomes what happens if you COULD create a perfect duplicate.

Our dogshit wetware constantly fails and breaks and fluctuates. If I'm still me with a 104 degree fever or return to being me after psychedelics then a machine with far greater precision and control should easily be able to maintain the pattern required, it's just retardedly computationally expensive to do so. There may even be more than one way to express the pattern that creates "you".
