Why were DnD fans so pissed off at a “lawful good” Mindflayer when 3.5e already had one?
listen man you may not understand this you may be too young but there are good people and races...and bad ones. some of them are just bad by nature, you know what i mean, nigga?
>>750738097This character makes no sense. I get having a manipulative character like the Emperor who pretends to be nice for his own ends; but Omeluum is literally selfless and tells you to prioritise saving duke ravengard over his own life, it is impossible for a mindflayer to be selfless and self-sacrificial towards humans
>>750738292>it is impossible for a mindflayer to be selfless and self-sacrificial towards humansdo you know how racist what you just said is?
Mind flayers are inherently evil
>>750738097Omelumm isn't good, his autism is just so great he can work with the good guys.
>>750738823I would also add Omelumm genuinely being able to play nice speaks volumes to how truly despicable Emperor is.
>>750738823He literally is good, when you break into the iron throne he tells you to forget about him and focus on saving duke ravengard.
>>750738097Omeluum isn't even lawful good, he's lawful neutral >>750739170He's a mindflayer, he's reading your mind right there and he's very much aware that if he asks you to save him over Ravengard there's a 0% chance you'll save him, while if he tells you to save Ravengard first, there's a 50/50 of you going out of your way to save him after Like he doesn't want to die, so he makes the objectively correct choice that gives him a maximum chance of survival
>>750738552>when someone says something so antiflaymitic you gotta hit them with the shart stare
>>750738175Idk that hust sounds like a justication for discrininatory prsctices against certain people
>gamers when a character may be a bit deceitful no...they cant do that...
It's racist to say that all members of a race must act alike. That's literally why these characters exist.
>>750738097I vaguely remember that I couldn't refuse the Ring of Mind Shielding that Omelumm offered as a reward but why would I want my bro to be susceptible to the Big Brain Hivemind again? Let me refuse that shit
>>750738097>why are you mad about someone shitting on your lawn when someone's shitted on your lawn before?
>>7507380973.5 was the gayest edition ever.
>>750738175I know chu mean nigga. some evil races they be created by him... yakub.
Broski have you been making this same thread for years now?
>>750738097eeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Omeluum is true neutral
>>750738097Because they don't work on the same logical system as any mortal/immortal not from the Far Realms.Even a devil is more trustworthy than a mindflayer, and more capable of good.
>>750738097Because it's gay and lame, simple as. BG is meant to be about godly darkness inside your soul, not dipshit squids in space.
>>750738552
>>750738097>"lawful good" mind flayer>is a used goods cutie pie fem mind flayer pure monk player character>good mind flayer (bg3)>plant autist npc that doesn't even appear in the final act to give a neutral ending
>>750740779>BG is meant to be about godly darkness inside your soulbest I can do is a dozen zany characters, a few cameos and some loot you can murderhobo for.
>>750738292why would being soulless = selfishOmeluum was being practical, the Duke's life had more value than his. or you can interpret him in many different ways
>>750740779>BG is meant to be about godly darkness inside your soulthe dark urge is an optional path and not the main theme of the game, if you're saying that's what BG3 should be about because that's what the last two BGs were about I'd tell you you're full of shit considering how poorly anything to do with the bhaalspawn was written in BG1/2
>>750741282A true mindflayer would never believe a non-mindflayer to be worth more than itself because in its mind it is a higher ascendant being above all non-mindflayers.Whether they can be temporarily non-hostile or not doesn't change that fact that they ALL believe this way. The Emperor is a much better take on a neutral mindflayer.
Mindflayers are (literally) soulless parasites born through murdering the host they were implanted in and want to subjugate & enslave everybody across the planes since they're very arrogant parasites. They are purely evil monsters, just like the giant floating eyeballs which are all turbo-schizophrenic and blast brainwashing rays at everybody that crosses their field of vision.
The lore exists in a bubble presented by bg3no one cares about media outside of bg3Stuff like categorizing things as "lawful good" or "evil" is fucking cringe
>>750738097>>750738902>>750739170>>750740149i always wondered why i couldnt get my nigga omeluum to fuck with the elder brain instead of having to squid out on the orpheus route
>>750741908how many times does it need to be explained He was manipulating you in the prison He didn't genuinely believe the Duke's life was worth more than his, but he did know that if you believed that he was acting altruistically you would in turn go out of your way to save himWhich is what the entire playerbase ended up doing, it's a brilliant display of manipulation that is not outright malicious and entirely fits with the mindflayer approachBut people keep overlooking it because they cannot possibly imagine that an NPC in a game is duplicitous without the game giving them a goatee to make it obvious The game flat out tells you that if a mindflayer chooses to talk to you, it's because he's manipulating you because they don't have an altruistic bone in their body, but with Omeluum manipulating you is not generally a hostile or malicious action because both your goals align
Why do all DnD games take place in a tiny 1% of the map?
>>750743694because people barely buy anything related to other areas
>>750738552It's also impossible for a fish to talk
>>750738097>DnD fansD&D casuals. Calling them fans is a bit of a stretch. D&D isn't an either/or kind of game. There's always exceptions for everything. It'd be an issue if there were whole factions of Illithid good guys, because then it becomes a pattern. But one or two? That's legit and typical of D&D lore. There's also a common misconception about what good/evil is. It is not empathy. The alignment system only refers to what people *DO*, not what they feel. A mind flayer that does good out of ideological reasons is still good, even if it is physically incapable of empathy.
>>750743694There are also more settings than just The Forgotten RealmsSo DnD games take place in 1% of 1% of the DnD settings
>>750743065bg3 is too intelligent for the audience
>>750744991it's just insane few people don't even begin to consider that maybe the highly intelligent mind reader may just be telling you what you want to hear but also it doesn't mean that saving him is the wrong thing to do, he's a powerful and reliable ally if you understand how he thinks, he has a vested interest in defeating the big bad for selfish reasons, and because throughout the entire game at no point your goals conflict with his he never once has any reason to fuck you over
Nobody cares about the shit writing, discuss the only culturally relevant topic to ever come out of this game
>>750745809both can consent
>>750738097people don't know about the Book of Exalted Deeds and its LG mindflayer with great tits
>>750745809Isn't Dragonirian a mindraped russian brony lolcow? Why are you screencapping him?
>>750738097"Muh subverted fantasy expectations good is bad bad is good" is lazy slop writing and has been since Drizzt dropped but at this point all mainstream fantasy is garbage anyways so who cares.
>>750746286which is of course why BG3 explicitly doesn't do thatthe mindflayer in question isn't a good person, he has mindflayer autism where he only cares about studying magic to the point he's willing to try and find a food source other than brains if possible, not because he's inherently opposed to eating brains, but because if he stops eating brains the other wizards start inviting him to their studies there's no subversion of good and evil going on in the slightest
>>750740102It's retarded to think that all kinds of conceivable minds will overlap significantly with the space of human minds. Many will be totally alien. That doesnt mean they are all the same, probably there are nigh-infinite kinds of alien mind, but if a creature does have a totally alien mind that means they very likely:-have zero empathy towards you, or if they do it's for some fucked up reason-would not pick up a baby about to be run over by a steamroller (again, except for some bizzare ass reason like 'not wanting to waste food')-have no reason to intervene if you are enslaved/dying/being tortured in their presence, again except for totally inexplicable or instrumental reasonsAnd the D&D alignment system says that if you have no empathy, condone murder/torture/slavery and would eat a baby if you were feeling peckish, you are EVIL. (unless you're too dumb to know better, animals get to be neutral). Illithids are ALWAYS CHAOTIC EVIL.Why is this one guy suddenly not alien, and cares about human morality at least enough to count as neutral? Maybe you could say he's insane and just happened to land on 'cares about babies' in the same random way that a human might land on 'cranks it to floor tiles' . That seems awfully contrived, but I could deal with it if it weren't obviously a shot at your exact point, which is idiotic. If true aliens exist, they should be really weird! And that almost always means being radically amoral!
>>750743065>But people keep overlooking it because they cannot possibly imagine that an NPC in a game is duplicitous without the game giving them a goatee to make it obviousyou need to remember that most people are trained and conditioned to gormlessly folllow manipulations by those slightly more intelligent than them.
dnd lore is the biggest pile of steaming horseshit in existencethe best thing to do is just delete all history and start making your own world up
reminder>be literally any sentient being in forgotten realms setting>necromancer comes by and sticks your brain in a jar and does a ritual incantation>maintain all memories and personality, except you are now lawful evil aligned
>>750746612the guy in question doesn't care about babies, he cares about magic which is the thing that sets him apart from other mindflayers because they don't care about magic at allmortal races care about magic, but the also care about babies, so him being intelligent he figures that if he acts like he cares about babies, mortal races will accept him as one of their own and indulge his love of magic
>>750746827It's not.You can't come up with something better.
>>750743694Because 80% of the rest is bare bones and basic not 'real world place'
>>750746286The game has plenty of standard evil minflayers, duergar, drow and good natured elves, what's wrong with some very few exceptions?
>>750743694
Damn BG3 actually sounds like shit. Glad I didn't play it. Why did it get such high notes when it's genuinely BG1/2 tier game with current gen graphics and writing that's no better?
>>750744991>tfw to integliant to be played
>>750747776because it's fun to play
>>750746974Me when caffeine withdrawal hits
>>750746974waiting for your point
>>750749701the point is that alignment manipulation is laughably simple
>>750738097The last good version of DnD was the 2nd Edition.
>>750738552Racism on 4chan stopped being ironic like a decade ago.
>>750738097>we already talmudically subverted your fantasy setting once, why do you have a problem with it being done more???
>>750743694If you ever actually DM a tabletop game you'll quickly realize that fleshing out an entire planet with detailed lore, characters, history, relics, dungeons etc. is way too much fucking work. So you focus on one location, country, city whatever and flesh it out.
>Here is this medieval fantasy world with wizards, dwarfs, goblins and elves.>And here are these mind controlling squids from alien spaceships.DnD is cringe.
>>750750454Here's the neat part. You don't have to play in forgotten realms multiverse nonsense. You can choose a better setting or make your own up, which is way more fun. I still have the maps from the campaigns I ran in high school.
>>750743694I was a bit impressed when I saw the full map of faerun with the entire space bg3 takes place in circled
>>750738097It's inherently evil because it's ugly
>>750743065wait so what happens if you reply with >you rightand leave the mindflayer to die
>>750739953so
>>750746827I was interested initially but after awhile I realized they got some cool ideas but it's ultimately retarded without any of the rule of cool like 40k has to prop it upthankfully there's a wealth of other ttrpgs to look at and enjoy
You know, you can play DnD however you like. It's even actively encouraged
>>750750282but that's what studios are for, entire dev teams make new OC all the time in the form of new games, why can't they make OC for a weirder DnD campaign
>>750738097>Why were DnD fans so pissed off at a “lawful good” Mindflayer when 3.5e already had one?I don't know what you are talking about, but I love Mindflayers, they look so creepy. I just know them from Demon's Souls. I just watched some BG3 content about Mindflayers. I might actually start playing the game.
>>750743694Isn't this just Earth with Africa obliterated?
>>750751301Such things exist, but they are not made by WotC. You could even just play older versions of the game and use those books. Dark Sun kicks ass as a setting, it's weird dark and brutal
>>750751370you also had planescape, spelljammer and Menzoberranzan, but then baldurs gate and neverwinter nights came around and they made Faerun the only place where you can make your DnD games
>>750750282yeah but like >>750751301 said, they get PAID to do it
>>750751326ummm....forgotten...or something
>>750746612>Illithids are ALWAYS CHAOTIC EVILThey're lawful evil actually
>>750748057Mintranny is the most pathetic villain I've ever seen>NYYYOOOO YOU SEE IT'S NOT ME WHO'S INCOMPETENT IT'S DA GOBLERINOS!Killed that bitch
>>750738097The only good mindflayer is a dead mindflayer. The best you can hope for with a living one is "polite".
>>750738292He’s not really in a position to manipulate you. So might as well help you save the others just to spite the cult
>>750739289>he's very much aware that if he asks you to save him over Ravengard there's a 0% chance you'll save him, while if he tells you to save Ravengard first, there's a 50/50 of you going out of your way to save him after This is the correct take. If a mindflayer is cooperating with you you must view every action it takes under a lens of manipulation.
>>750738097He's more like true neutral.
>>750740779It's actually meant to be about the adventures of adventurers in and surrounding the city of Baldur's Gate.
>>750743694Unironically eurocentrism.
>>750747776>Why did it get such high notes when it's genuinely BG1/2 tier game with current gen graphics and writing that's no better?Having incredibly good, creative and fun gameplay.
