I just pressed random shit, cleared 3-4 areas and then spontaneously died. Need to retry it some day.

I tried this shit and was bored to tears. What's the appeal? I've played Rift Wizard 2, Path of Achra, Infra Arcana, and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and all of those were WAYY more interesting.
    >>
    >>750735434
normal difficulty involves a lot of mindless mob clearing, but on nightmare difficulty or higher the enemies you encounter are a lot more interesting. at that point things become tactically rich, and you have to manage cooldowns, debuffs, positioning, etc in a layered way that the games you mention (which are also good) don't do.

    >>750735434
only played DC:SS out of those and ToME 4 is more autism based around 'more spreadsheets' for me. It's also more 'specific' in terms of you can build a character from the start more accurately like NetHack does. DC:SS is more open and can let you have your MiFi worship Sif and have her giving you a bunch of spells to become 'I am the melee caster bull now'

Tome has a few tracks hidden in it that I really like as background music.
It has its niche and in that niche it has HEAPS of content classes and so on
    >>
tome was supposed to be a Middle Earth game but he didn't wanna pay a licensing fee so it ain't a Middle Earth game. the soul comes from how the guy just throws stuff in to the game, all sorts of shit he comes up with it's real kitchen sink development, and whether it's good or sucks a huge dick he leaves it in. game can be wild

    "tome" is ToME4
It WAS Tales of Middle Earth until tome2
When copyright and shit started cracking down on free software.
All of band games are lotr based as well.

What a weird way to try to frame how this was a lotr fan game like many other roguelikes and became its own thing.

I love the class design of this game so much. So many unique concepts and mechanics.
Paradox Mage with its literal time travel mechanics, Solipsist with the dream duel, Writhing One straight out of Cthulhu, and so on.
Although some of the classes are blatant ripoffs of World of Warcraft.
    >>
    >>750745604
    Yup yup yup
Lots or Tolkien's works has shit like uh... big worms
    >>
    >>750745645
    >Although some of the classes are blatant ripoffs of World of Warcraft.
The classes take a lot from angband's classes....
which is uh... from the 90s and a lot older than wow

blizzard took a lot from roguelikes.
    >>
    >>750745767
80% of Sun Paladin's abilities are straight copies of WoW Holy/Prot/Ret Paladin spells.
Shadowblade too. Shadowstep, Shadow Dance, etc.
    >>
I've gotten really far with Dwarf Beserk, Elf Archer and Human Bulwark especially (Darth turned into a cloudy city with lightning storms attacking the people and I). However, I don't have all classes.
    >>

    >>750732762

    >>
    >>750746180
Why not just play on infinite life mode?
    >>
    >>750747934
Why not just mod your games to be invincible all the time?
Why not just watch a video of someone beating the game?
Why not just imagine beating the game?
Why not say you played and beat it despite never having touched it?
    >>
    >>750747981
so you only play on hardcore?
    very impressive
    >>
    >>750748061
    >hardcore?
    You mean Roguelike difficulty?
The default difficulty of the game?
The intended difficulty of the game?
The literal point of the genre?

Yes anon, that is the ONLY difficulty I have ever played the game on and to play on any other is pointless.
Did you really just ask if people actually play on roguelike in a thread about roguelikes?
    >>
    >>750748089
    >The default difficulty of the game?
NTA but HACKSCHEWALLY by default it goes to adventure mode so you get a few lives to play around with since ToME tends to suddenly spring one hit killers on you out of nowhere
    >>
    >>750736270
Retard. ToME stayed free, the steam version is basically the donator version that lets you get the premium content and the expansions without having to mess with his crusty site and its donation system
    >>
    >>750747934
i'm that anon, I like the tension in roguelike a lot more, the dopamine rush from actually reaching the latter parts of the game that one time was crazy
    >>
    >>750748131
It only does that so plebs aren't instantly filtered, once you know which spots are scary you can play more careful. I won on Insane Roguelike but it would never work on a blind run.
    >>
    >>750735434
It has a fun class/skill system and mmo style cooldowns so its really fun in the beginning but the more you play it you realize it's a really shallow game. The items and enemies are really boring and the world is stupid. Nobody who is really into roguelikes plays TOME as their main game.
    >>
    >>750735964
    >insane rl on like 10 classes
I don't remember name for highest difficulty but if this is insane, then I call bullshit. Highest difficulty is beyond difficult, only classes like mage with blink and scrying eye can hope to beat it but even then chances are close to none because random boss can spawn with something mage won't be able to handle.
    >>
    >>750751453
Insane is the highest difficulty meant to be playable. Madness is the highest difficulty but it's only winnable through extreme luck or cheated/modded adventurer builds.
    >>
    >>750732762
    DCSS is superior
    >>
    >>750751880
    >Madness
Yeah, that's the name. Fun but indeed bullshit, couldn't even leave first continent
    >>
    >>750732762
It's close to how path of exile hardcore plays. You get giga powers very fast and start mowing down rooms. Getting lost in almost meditative zone out gameplay. Until randomly exploding from a mob or mechanic.
    >>
I love this game, it's awesome to be a Skeleton Brawler
    >>
ROGUE clones are so fucking dumb and retarded, how did these backpedalling simulators ever find a cult following? They're literally proto-vampire survivors clones.

    Dungeon crawler.
    >>
    >>750752689
You're ignorant. Roguelikes are one of the deepest strategy genres in existence.
    >>
    >>750752832
That's a subgenre and both roguelikes and dungeon crawls are in the RPG genre.
    >>
    >>750752935
    It's more RNG than strategy.
    >>
What went so right was it standing on the shoulders of giants, and being part of a community of games that would innovate for the sake of bettering the game and expect no reward. Traditional roguelikes have always been made the way all games should be made, with that passion, and they had years and years as Tales of Middle Earth to work toward their final form that way.
    >>
    >>750752832
I wouldn't even call Rogue and its derivatives like DCSS a dungeon crawler, SMT is a dungeon crawler, Roguelikes are made for zoning out mass combat where you either hold forward until you die or you hold back+strongest spell until you die.
    >>
    >>750753206
    nope
    >>
    >>750753291
Roguelikes are for literally the opposite of that, what the hell?
    >>
    >>750753291
if you zone out in a real roguelike you die.
    >>
I think it says something when modern roguelikes automate picking up and identifying items. It's a mechanic nobody likes.

Are we even talking about the same genre? Into midgame these games start packing floors wall to wall with enemies it's the antithesis of methodical gameplay

    >Are we even talking about the same genre?
No I don't think we are. Most roguelikes do not devolve into floor wide mass enemies or "hold forward until you die" They are very slow and chess like with many options to consider.
    >>
    >>750733061
Sounds like the way I used to play it, on permadeath difficulty and with little to no lessons learned with reach attempt of course.
    >>
    >>750746180
    >1000 hours
    >haven't beaten the game once
just… HOW? it means you dont even have insane or madness unlocked and nightmare is really not that hard
    >>
    >>750755628
Must be the type of person who thinks success in roguelikes is based on RNG instead of tsctics
    >>
    >>750732762
    >>
    >>750752689
ToME is deliberate building choices: the game.
    >>
    >>750732762
i love the press button to awesome and modern itemization.
but i understand why a lot of core traditional rogue fans will think its bloated slop.
some of us just need more stimulation than bumping into Bat. with Sword. plus 1.
