Since the first Mario film came out, big Shiggy has been using the opportunity to do a brand rehabilitation of Princess Peach from braindead damsel into an action heroine on par with Mario, with stuff like being playable again in Super Mario Bros Wonder and a more confident presentation and voicework in Princess Peach Showtime.What will her role be in future Super Mario games? Will she still be a damsel in distress or have a more proactive role even if not playable like she was in Wonder? And Mario will just have to rescue other entites like the Sprixie fairies or just be generally motivated to kick Bowser's ass?

But by the start of the 2010s Miyamoto and Iwata were making overtures towards multimedia projects, like the ill-fated Netflix Zelda project, and Mario being shopped around to Sony before ending with NBCUniversal and Illumination. So they probably started thinking about the central conceits of their franchise more seriously by that point.The appeal to a female market probably didn't hurt either.
