Artistic masterpiece. Probably one of my least favorite FFs. I don't care for Zidane or any of the supporting cast, find the story to be underwhelming, and it has no special gameplay/combat systems to prop it up. It's not bad but I do find it very weird when people consider it one of their favorites.

Not every character has to have a typical arc. YouTube essayists have really made people think characters have to be written a particular way. Zidane is a strong person with strong convictions that are constantly tested, the catharsis is that he is able to persevere through it all - it’s equally compelling to me.

Better the older you are, at least spiritually. Genuinely after the success of 7 and 8 and with 10 already in the pipleine the devs knew the future for JRPGs involved anime boys in sci-fi settings. They decided to make 9 as a love letter to the older style of not only FF but RPGs in general. Wizardry, DQ, and everything else with obviously FF itself getting the largest part of that. So if you are at a point where you could share in that love of the classic stuff, it's great. If you just take it off the shelf as your first videogame you will probably think it's "fine." The whole aspect of the anxiety of knowing that we'll die one day and the pain of seeing it close can obviously transcend nostalgia, but this isn't the only source of that even on the PS1 so it won't get a ton of bonus points for that.

Steiner for instance loses a lot of relevancy past disc 2 because his character arc is pretty much already completed. So despite establishing himself as part of the main clique, he drops off in relevancy in the story almost immediately. Eiko is also another character that drops off in relevancy after Alexander summon. She's essentially used as a macguffin purely for Garnet and then she's immediately discarded later on. This is nothing new for Final Fantasy though some characters have less stakes than others but I feel the subsequent title FFX established that almost everyone had a much higher stake in the story than FFIX's did.

Now that time has passed I still think the art direction is stellar in all aspects (yes even the midi soundtrack) but the franchise has had better game mechanics (mostly in terms of team/character building) both before it and after it. I still get a bit chocked up when I put on the ending song and it transitions into the classic FF1 tune.
