No one told me Star Force is EVEN BETTER than Battle Network
>>750728776I saw they put in on the SwitchIs it a good series over MMBN?
>>750729138>Is it a good series over MMBN?It's like a gentle tier above BN.Combat and story are more nuanced, overworld traversal is a bit more interesting, dungeons still have that terrible pipework level design.Think of it like MMBN +1.
>>750729138It's less strategic but has more action.
>>750728776

>>750729993y tho
The story and characters are better than BN. But gameplay? Nah. Going from 3x3 to 1x3 grid is a downgrade. And the 3D is ugly. I hear people say the battle system is actually sophisticated but I never cared to understand it deeply since the games are never that hard.
>>750728776Because it's fundamentally not true.
Better for the lower IQs yeah
>>750729138It's more reactionary instead of deck/build focused
>>750730610>Going from 3x3 to 1x3 grid is a downgradeI used to think that, but you were always doing nothing with your own squares outside of PvP battles.Actually nah I take it back. There were some great boss attacks in BN that you had to dodge.
>>750728776>grid based>but somehow less movement options than Battle Network seriesWHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!
I refuse to write "Megaman Starforce" with spaces between the words.
Finished Star Force 1 and 3 with all stars as a teen. Just finished Exe1 and am playing Exe2 (looking for shit in the Undernet). A huge improvement but I'm ready for the game to be over at this point
>>750731595>just finished Rockman.EXEOh no here come the weebs. Don't even know why they call him Rockman he has nothing to with the number 6.
>>750731747He's called that because Mega Man robots are named after music genres. Rock & Roll.
>>750731815no he shoots rocks. roll rolls her broom
>>750731747I was just too lazy to type the full name nigga
>>750730383ENEMY DELETED
>>750731815>Mega Man robots are named after music genres>Chill PenguinWell that theory is out the window.
This is what they want to destroy.
>>750730610>The story and characters are better than BN.Story? Debatable. Characters? Literally 90% of the SF cast and villeins are forgettable throwaways. Even fucking DEX has more aura and character than half the SF cast.
>>750732047Only the people bots get that privilege. And there are (almost) no robots in the X era. Only reploids.>>750732106Dex doesn't have a scene that's anywhere as kino as the Bud shirt one.
>>750732106Imagine the ugly bastard fan art...
The plot twist in BN1 was retarded. Like how does this soul synchronization between Lan and MegaMan even work and what does your kid's dna got to do with it. I know it's a kid's game and shit but that still felt unnecessary and retarded.
>>750732106I don't care about SF characters either but all of Lan's friends are totally forgettable do nothing characters, to the point where I don't understand why people in the BN threads forever ago were hating on 6 for sidelining them (they hadn't done anything for multiple games) for new forgettable do nothing characters. And a lot of BN villains are throwaways too, there are some recurring characters like Mr. Match and Pride but they're not really mainstays.
>>750732106>I am STRRRONG and my personality is STRRONG and my aesthetic and power is RRRSTROOONGG>Look inside >Just fat as fuck Many such cases
>>750732302>Like how does this soul synchronization between Lan and MegaMan even workI've done it before it's simple. I had to sell my PET after it though it was too taxing on the body.
>>750732386You can thank that one bully character from Doraemon for that
>class prez tsunBro this series was made for (You)
>watching the anime alongside playing star forcegood shit, thought it does make you realise how limited the DS/GBA was for storytelling.
For me it's Red Gaia Eraser
I like Starforce's narrative and characters more but I prefer the 3x3 grid and sideways view of battle network
I don't get what they were getting at with the sword controls in starforce
>>750728776It's not, at least not the first one. The second is close, but shits the bed in tone. The third is great, about matching BN at its best, but so much of the game was cut in the global release on the DS that I'm honestly glad Capcom shamelessly rereleases older games as collections constantly, because I never would've played 3 the way it was meant to be played without the new collection, at least not without some sort of patch that wasn't around back when I played 3 on my DS flashkart a decade+ ago.
>>750736263>but so much of the game was cut in the global release on the DSWhat exactly changed
>>750729138SF1: tons of removed game systems since they’re starting with a new engineSF2: getting better but they added a bunch of animation delay to combat and ruined itSF3: fixed combat, readded more features. as good as mmbn
>>750736505The big one is the noise mod gear system in its entirety is just gone, there's no poker hand gimmick for abilities, the purpose cards which change the super mode in the postgame are gone, and the secret satellite sever for special folders is gone too.
>>750736831SF4: cancelled midway through development because each SF game sold half as much as the last one. Capcom was oversaturating the market at the time with multiple MM games each year
>>750736995>Capcom was oversaturating the market at the time with multiple MM games each yearConsidering megaman spinoffs are usually better than the main series, I wish they had continued without stopping, even if it was a slight dent in their otherwise massive profits to date.
>>750736995I don't know what it is with Megaman games having an insane amount of sequels.Did we really need 6 battle network games? People only talk about 1, 3 and 6.
>>750728776After playing some of the first SF game, the combat feels unsatisfying in some way. I'm not setting up intricate plays to kill my enemy I just roll the big unga damage cards and spam them as much as possible. It's very unga bunga
>>750728776The story and characters are better than BN, but the combat absolutely isn't.
Boss design took a hit as well. I remember the SF1 bosses were ass, they all only had two moves: shoot 1 column or sweep all 3 columns. By SF3, they figured out how to make them creative and fun again
>>750732106Name a single 1-off BN villain more memorable than society goose.
>>750737143The series was making too much money to stop at 3, which is what lead to BN4 having the sales numbers it did (despite the reputation it garnered after release)
>>750737143> assemble dev team> make one new game per year> repeat until fans stop buying it
>>750737440>why does no one want to buy it anymore? It seems there'sno longer a market for this
>>750737440We did not know how good we had it back then
>>750737258That's not even a fair pick. BN villains were legit terrorist that committed all forms of terrorist acts. Some of which killed themselves or got killed. Whereas the rest managed to reform.
>>750738105>Some of which killed themselvesNo? Certainly not on-screen at least.>or got killedAll I can think of is that one dude that Wily took care of off-screen in 3
the combat is 100x worse and less interesting. Dunking on dudes with your intricate combos, the feeling of drawing combos when your deck is a work in progress, the sheer level of options and experiments you can run through dwarf starforce and no amount of good characters/story will change that. There's a reason nothing is trying to ape starforce
>>750739098There's also the airman guy, but his dying is all he had
Star Force combat is way worse than BN and the movement area is barely even a factor. The big problem is how deckbuilding works. In BN you eventually make a deck streamlined to 1-2 letter codes, making it so you can select 5 chips in a turn. The code system balances out the chips and makes it so you can't just cram all the strongest attacks in one combo. Once you have a good deck every random battle becomes a puzzle of "how can I use my 5 chips to clear this entire screen in ~1 second, with the fewest button presses possible?" In this way battles in BN always stay engaging, if you have a good deck.In Star Force they got rid of the letter code system, which not only means you can just fill your deck with all your strongest attacks, but it means there's a hard limit on only being able to select 2-3 cards in a turn down from 5, which is not enough to end the battle. In order to get more cards without waiting an entire turn you need to land counter hits, which means to speedup battles in SF you need to be fully REactive, waiting for counters, instead of PROactive, clearing the enemies with efficient combos before they attack. It makes SF combat both less strategic and, ironically, slower despite being more action focused.
>>750739971Why do you have this image saved haha
>>750728776The gameplay looks way worse.
>>750739319>>750739971I've never played Starforce. I'm just here to agree that BN has amazing gameplay and all the options make replaying or just going back to a 100% save file fun and engaging.
Battle Network and Star Force surely have the best battle system of all time right?I can’t think of what comes close. Maybe Radiant Historian, Grandia.
>>750741567I also have no horse in this race and just enjoy both systems, even if BN's is overall better
>>750728776People immediately dismiss it because of the smaller grid but you weren’t really doing shit with with your own squares except dodging. The combat is 100x better and has more depth than BN
>>750738096I’m starting SMT raidou 3 today and it got me thinking, these crazy fuckers made seven SMT games for the ps2 and they’re all great or all time great. Then the ps3 comes and what happens? Nothing. They spent like eight years making persona 5 and that was the end of fast gamedev for them
>>750742087If you think SF combat is better than BN you have straight up never piloted a good BN deck
>>750741567SF is alright if you pretend its not a BN game and instead its own game. Definitely has some issues here or there that the remaster fixed. Even though I prefer BN, SF is still worth a try.
>>750737143>>750737326The BN games also didn't exist in a vacuum. The series became a merchandising giant for its duration with toys, accessories for the Japanese games like the Battle Chip Gate, anime, manga, etc. This continued to an extent with Star Force, but something big fizzled out after SF1. The SF2 anime was a rush-job that was instantly worse from the first episode after a satisfying SF1 run, no SF3 anime was made, and SF3 was the first entry to skip Europe entirely until the Legacy Collection release.Internationally, you didn't get to see so much of this and most just know the games. This franchise spectacle is part of why Inafune was so ambitious with the Mighty No. 9 project.>>750741885It's definitely up there, it works so well on both a surface level in casual play, and on a technical level with elaborate set-ups and executions. One of the best implementations of a deck builder and character customiser in gaming, especially with 3 and 6.I'm largely in it for the single player campaigns and post-games, and BN5's early game progression feels so stiff and the folder building so boring and restrictive.I've been replaying BN1 OSS (the DS version with Star Force content), and the folder building is much better than expected. C code chips are actually extremely viable from the early game through to the end, particularly since the game has an "open super dungeon" approach to the internet and you can load your folder with reasonably strong chips like Quake 3 C and KngtSwrd C early enough, and those pair with the navi chips ColorMan and ClockMan.I'm playing it on a Retroid Pocket Nova, the screen can play DS games at 5x integer scale and look great, and this game works fine as a single-screen experience with a toggle screen button for checking the map.
>>750742180JRPG devs got into a weird situation where the PS3 was too difficult to program for and everyone was putting R&D into graphical development (e.g. tri-Ace). Xbox and Steam had no maket in Japan, years of making stuff for the PS1 and PS2 and you can see why all the standout games of that gen are on the Nintendo DS.
>>750728776Name a villain with more Aura farm than Hyde.
>>750732361>to the point where I don't understand why people in the BN threads forever ago were hating on 6 for sidelining themAnime nostalgia. Not saying the anime is the only reason why people cared about BN as a whole, but it is the only reason anyone cared about the characters.
>>750742467>sometjing fizzled out after BNIt was just that time period where the millenials grew out of everything. Digimon Data Squad, Yugioh GX, Beyblade, ever had juuust started to move on and the iPhone started up. It wasn’t really Star Force’s fault. Honestly if it wasn’t for Pokémon Black and White capitalising on the nostalgia of the gen 1 players, the whole Digimon/Pokemon/Megaman ecosystem were in now wouldn’t exist.
>>750742467BN5 has a Persona 3 super dungeon?
>>750728776I cant be the only one who sees this, right?
>>750742952Turn up the Bass
>>750742952 nigga looks straight outta concord
>>750742952Hyde is a little bitch though
>>750742973If I recall correctly, the market was moving way too fast and consoles were cycling way too quickly. I got a PSP at that time and skipped the entire NDS-3DS phenomenon. As I was growing older Starforce sounded like a low quality cashgrab and the first game does seem to have no idea where to start as a new IP, it doesn't surprise me they lost the audience since BN was perfectly wrapped up.
>>750743026kek SF really did predict the future.
>>750728776luna single-handedly makes starforce better than battle network
>>750743229Star Force fucked up right from the start because the "2 versions" thing already didn't fit in BN and yet with Star Force they got greedy and launched with THREE versions. So many people looked at that and just said "fuck it"
>>750743264Luna is genuine S-tier waifu. Some Asuka or Kuroneko tier stuff.
>>750743357It's amazing how Luna and Sonia kickstart the series. Geo was a total bitch.

Star Force is awesome, better than BN imo. The 3rd game is one of the best ever and it's a shame we never got the 4th game.

>>750728776I never thought you would have believed me if I did.
>>750742973I think you're more out of touch than anything>Digimon Data Squad,1) The show was moved to a network not many people owned in the US. 2) People grew out of shitty dubs back when illegal streaming was the norm 3) "Savors", the actual name, looked like ass with the budget of 2 peanuts. >>750743578I lived through it. I was picking up Star Force from the shelves. That period was when everyone becomes too cold for their childhood interests in high school and so it all fizzled out. Every community had their dedicated forums though. Also fansubbing was starting to gain traction, so your Digimon Savers, Yugioh 5Ds fans, It was all underground. There were no YouTube algos to say “REMEMBER MEDABOTS?!” or no feeds to show you Megaman Zero3 fanart, that’s just how it was at the time.
