    I feel you.
it wasnt until like a decade later after some anon explained to me how the game is meant to be played that I understand it.
you are actually meant to fuck the story up and keep replaying it over and over.
basically its like a kind of reoguelike. You fuck the story up but in the beginning its about just getting as much PP, leveling up and just dicking around and having fun. Die, or fuck up restart over and over then eventually you level up so much that you can steam through the story and save everyone and do a perfect run.
Though then it has OP mode and some really hard cheevos like staying alive for X amount of days.

It being a kind of roguelike didnt dawn on me at first and I dropped the game thinking its too hard.
In short stop trying to 100% it and just focus on having fun and leveling up then it will be a breeze.
    >>
    >>750694583
just have fun exploring the mall. once you get a few levels under your belt then you can focus on the story.
    >>
    >the promo image of the game is just a weird amalgamation of concept art and stock photos
No wonder you never see this area in the actual game
    >>
Just concentrate on leveling up early on and then it becomes a breeze. Grab a few books that increase the durability of weapons and grab a few chainsaws from the clown boss or hardware store and nothing can stop you.

Unironically skill issue, both your character and you will get better at the game.
But the first playthrough is usually a write-off.
Use it to learn the game, take some photos, kill psychos, find some good weapons and explore.
    >>
    >>750694583
You're supposed to die a few times and level up on your first playthrough or two. Alternatively, get a car, go to the tunnels, and start working on getting the Mega Buster. You'll both be high level and have a weapon that one shots everything when you actually play through all of the missions/try to get all of the survivors.
    >>
The stupidest mechanic in this game is learning where all the + Damage / Durability books are for certain weapon types and having them permanently take up inventory space.
You also eventually find out about buff blended drinks that require specific ingredients for high healing + speed buffs.

It's annoying because once you figure out this optimal stuff you spend more the game not being able to carry anything. The convicts in the park and their mounted machine gun is one of the best weapons you get early on but you try to save the limited ammunition for Psychopath encounters

Rescuing everyone is possible but it's a pain in the neck as they only spawn between predetermined moments of the MSQ. There's also an achievement to take all walkie-talkie calls from Otis but if some random ass zombie lands a hit on you during one of the 100+ calls it's over.

I remember the 53,594 zombie kills achievement was so rough on my Xbox 360 it would overheat, get very loud & the framerate would tank to like 10 FPS at times. I swear sometimes you would even freeze, i think it was only possible by mowing them down in the underground carpark with driveable vans until their engines broke.

Anyway, It's one of those games that you really need to put in the hours to get good at. I wouldn't touch it nowdays, Dead Rising really feels like one of those pre-internet era games. The story was genuinely fun though. They completely phoned it in with the remaster, people were compiling video evidence of there being less zombies / enemies disappearing right infront of you. & rewriting some of the dialogue soas not to be offensive, they took a big shit on it & I'm glad i never purchased the demake

    >Grab the magazine in the entrance plaza's bookstore that gives you +25% exp from all survivor related exp gains as soon as you get access to it
The vast majority of the xp you can get in this game comes from survivors and that 25% bonus is absolutely ludicrous. I just did a fresh run to commemorate the 20 year anniversary and I was level 46 before the military showed up.

    >>750697001
    >but if some random ass zombie lands a hit on you during one of the 100+ calls it's over.
You don't fail the achievement so long as you answer him when he calls you back and let him finish the call. Honestly the worst part about that achievement is being forced to wait outside of the areas where scoops show up while waiting for it to activate since he won't call you if you're in the place where it happens.

Also on an unrelated note pretty much everything you need to cruise through the game can be picked up in Paradise Plaza.

    >>
You're supposed to start over a couple of times. The game becomes playable when you level up enough to start with like 6 health cubes, I believe. Also, feel free to ignore survivors on your first playthrough because the game is much more enjoyable without their braindead antics. You also spare yourself from having to listen to that fat bitch sobbing
and asking, "What happened?" over and over again.
    >>
    >>750694784
nah, i too played it as a retarded teen and could nevet get past carlito with the sniper (the second fight?[actually it was the fucking shopping cart guy in the supermarket, no idea why he filtered teenage me]). played it again 1 or 2 years ago and did the whole thing in one playthrough. got most of the survivors too which is important for xp/pp... whatever because you need more life bars, inventory space and some of the moves are quite handy too
    >>
    >>750702582
It's always funny when people struggle with sniper Carlito, as the window of the sports store right next to the fight has a weapon that lets you cheese him. The hockey sticks can be used to shoot pucks at him while your body remains safe behind a pillar.
    >>
    >>750702582

I got past the clown, that is the last psycho I remember though it was over 15 years ago since I played it.
I dont really like the game anyway. Tried DR 2 and 3 and again dropped them both really early on.

On a first playthrough, yeah, that's kind of the fucking point. You're gonna get your shit pushed in and start over at a higher level.
If you absolutely can't stand being at a disadvantage there's a way around that: get far enough to get into the parking garage with a drivable car and just plow through zombies for an entire 3 day cycle. You'll start the next playthrough with a ton of HP and abilities and if you killed around 54k zombies in that run you'll get the bullshit OP mega buster to spawn at the safe room.

A lot of the op shit is hard to figure out without a guide. Dead Rising is best played blind. Figuring out what is strong and what isn't is a big part of the game, looking up instruction ruins the game.
    >>
    >>750702793
    >you should look up cheese strats as soon as a game launches rather than figuring things out for yourself
what >>750703236 says. as a kid my method was to get a katana and the speed boost smoothie, way more fun. i was mistaken anyway, it was the psycho supermarket owner with the shopping cart of death who filtered teenage me
    >>750702812
honestly cant say anything to help, my recent replay had me feeling like everything was perfectly paced but i did miss a few survivors. honestly getting a big posse of survivors and arming the confident ones with guns will enable your group to almost completely keep themselves safe. fuck, yeah the clown was difficult for me bak then too. honestly this whole game was ludicrously challenging for me back when it launch but admittedly i was trash ad vidya until about 25-30 years old.
    >DR 2
still never played any sequel s but 2 is as far as id go. the series turned into yearly slop after 1, 2 at a push. for some reason it heavily reminds me of the saints row franchises trajectory, first 2 games are ok then turns into shit drivel for the CoD tier audience
    >>750702914
dont ignore survivors they give a shitload of xp, do what i said above if you know where to get guns. even pistols from the cops in playland plaza or whatever the fuck its called lol will do

    >>
    >>750703615
i wish your mother instantly respawned but in DR1 its impled the zombies come in from outside the mall and increase in numbers during the days. besides, they dont instantly respawn. they do if you leave the area but you can clear out the immediate area

    >>
I wish survivors could enter the safehouse without climbing over the ledge. It's so annoying when a crowd gets stuck there.
    >>
    >>750702239
Or just stock up in the blue chainsaws and get the book that gives all tools more durability
    >>
    >>750703615
There's over 53,000 residents in Willamette so no shit they'll keep spawning. You wont naturally kill 53k zombies in one playthrough unless you run over zombies with the car
    >>
    >>750694583
The first two games (the only ones worth playing) are all about the meta knowledge. You can beat the game rescuing all survivors starting from level 1, but you need to know where the good weapons are, where the useful stores are, the recipe of the good blender mixes and the spots to make them, the best magazines to have, the time and location of unmarked survivors, the best route to save as much time as possible when rescuing survivors. Once you know what to do, success is pretty consistent. It's a lot less about being good at the game and more about know what to do. Also mini chainsaws are OP as fuck. It's a personal challenge of mine to not use them.
    >>
    >>750704994
You have never used a mannequin torso. The chainsaw has notably lower damage and stun. Having 27x durability isn't a factor in psycho fights.
    >>
    >>750705337
I only vaguely remember a torso hitting multiple times but the damage was negligible
    >>
    >>750705428
Then you remember wrong. The torso does a silly amount of damage in a single hit.
    >>
    >>750705582
nta but i reckon the chainsaw's still better. regardless of which is better though i hate every conversation boils down to
    >ignore most items arguably the entire point of the game
    >muh chainsaw muh mannequin
    >>
    >>750705880
I do agree with that. Knowing all the good strats ruins the game for newcomers. Trying things out to find the best strats is at least 50% of the game. This is also why i dislike the combo items in 2. It removes experimentation in favor of presenting a list of the objectively best weapons.
    >>
    >>750694583
I kinda want to play Dead Rising again since it's probably one of my favorite games, but I already completed it and know all of the tricks, hate the fact that I can't enjoy playing through a game more than once.
    >>
    >>750706662
yeah i always saw the combo weapons in 2 and was divided on it being stupid or cool. mid/late 2000's was the thick of the "youll be able to combine things" era that would go on to be a shallow mechanic in nearly every videogame it was ever introduced to
    >>750706925
after my recent full playthrough i immediately went for an unironic soldier roleplaying run where i only wore the army gear and used guns, mostly the uzi. but i get people not enjoying the idea of limiting yourself being "more content"

    >>

    >>
    >>750716324

    >>
    >>750716324
That's because zombies media as trend fell off by 2014-2015 and it was all wrapped up withing Dying Light release. It's just not popular and so companies don't make this kind of media anymore unless it's indie.
    >>
    >>750697001
Technically you can't save everyone if you do all of the missions, due to certain events in the main story. There is a specific point in the main story you have to stop playing if you want to save the maximum number of people.
    >>
    >>750717634
If you like 1 one more, it isn't better than it but still fun. If you like 2 more, it is even more fun.
    >>
    >>750717634
Easier than DR1 because it's DR2 with QoL improvements and more polish, and way more polished than normal DR2. Roughly 70-80% of the game is same as DR2 but things are redistributed around differently, like survivors or some item spawns. Sandbox mode is also interesting addition but gets boring without coop partner.

I think it holds up. It has a bit more content than the the original version of 2 like the extra area and at least 1 new psycho fight from what I can remember. The story is mostly the same but they change up a couple of the plot points which help to make it a little more interesting if you've already played 2.

My personal head canon is 1 -> OTR -> Series ends.
    >>

Different plot twist and final boss, photography mechanics from 1, missions/survivors are switched around, item locations are moved, things are more expensive, bosses are given damage caps if you hit them too many times consecutively, and there's an added area to the map. It mostly plays like a Master Quest version of 2, and narratively it expects you to be familiar with the original. For a first time player of the frsnch if they come off of 1 and intend to play 3 in time, then Case Zero + the original 2 + Case West is the canonical version of events with Off the Record as a dead end what-if scenario.

Only if you know to kill the clown, get the mini chainsaw, get all the books for the chainsaw, and then it's ez mode.
I wish Capcom would make a patch for the game to rebalance it, I can't not just do this every playthrough because it's so OP.

from 1 to 2 (OFTR is the same game as 2 just with a few extra stuff) the game feels easier but is still challenging if you are new to the series, frank is now kind of an ironic washed up star a la charlie sheen but not borderlands tier of asshole cheesy one liner.
    Its worth a playtrought.

You can save every survivor and get the true ending on the first run from level 1, but the real issue that makes it very difficult is Frank's speed stat. If you get lucky and speed levels to the max after the first few survivors, you are good to go.
    >>
    >>750722582
its intentional as they changed back to this in DR2 OTR.
    >>
    >>750722582
    There's two real choices:
    1. Slowly walk in front of them and kill every zombie near them, giving the survivors no weapons.
    2. Use the marker to send survivors to a wall while you follow after them and save any who get grabbed on the way, also not giving the survivors any weapons.

You pretty much have to avoid making them stop so they can choose to cower or push a zombie while the zombie chooses to target them. As long as everyone is moving the zombies won't have time to decide to target them instead of Frank.
    >>
Is it? I only remember being mad at the last boss and that's mostly because you had to replay the tank.

Play the remake then. They made it so much easier that I got the platinum in like 30 hours. I still think the original was balanced better though. Nothing in it was too hard if you knew what you were doing aside from a couple things like Transmissionary or Frank the Pimp.

I don’t think you’re meant to fail on your first playthrough. I just started a brand new playthrough again last year and I managed to get the S-rank ending in my first try. If you manage to fail a scoop, the game gives you a chance to go back to an older save. Unless you managed to soft lock yourself through poor saves, you can breeze through the good ending as a first time player. It’s only when you see the score ranking at the end and you see how much PP you get from rescuing survivors that you decide “maybe I should give the game another go”

You can beat this game without scumming levels.

Play through the intro, grab every fast melee weapon and food in the mall entrance. Go into the security room and grab only coffee creamer. Save the couple and grab knives and pipes. When the first event starts, make Quickstep drinks at the first blender upstairs and grab the katana if you're fast. Make Quickstep drinks and get out to the first boss fight immediately. Beat Carlito and grab the uzi on top of the sign and make more Quicksteps at Yogurt Land or w/e. Rush like crazy to get the uzi from the fountain and Barnaby and do not wait for Brad. Press the button yourself, trigger the cutscene, save fatty from the clothing store and give him the uzi with the least amount of ammo. Get moving immediately, take Bill to the saferoom immediately. If you did this right, you will have more than enough time to restock and head back out to get the others. Quickstep your ass all the way out to collect the other 3 survivors, if you don't suck then you avoid convicts. Rescue them and go back outside to fight them and save Sophie. Get more weapons and make more Quicksteps. If you power leveled like a noob, grab your chainsaw books. Beat Adam, save the Asians, go get the injured guy. Day one complete.
    >>
    >>750727939
Also, USE YOUR FUCKING VOICE COMMANDS! You will save yourself so much fucking time and heartache if you tell your guys to rally around in cleared areas then tell them to follow you. Cleaving weapons, benches, canisters, chainsaws, and umbrellas are your friends.

    >>
    >>750728094
Just the blenders, but yes. There is a whole list of combos that yield different drinks.

    Energizer
    Cabbage + Orange Juice
    Cabbage + Cabbage

    Quickstep
    Coffee Creamer + Coffee Creamer
Coffee Creamer (or Frozen Veggies) + Orange Juice
    Wine + Wine

    Untouchable
    Pie + Pie
    Canned Food + Cabbage
    Pie + Orange Juice

These are nit the only combinations, just the quickest to obtain. Every food item has a combination and juices can be combined. Zombait, Nectar, Spitfire, and Randomizer are mostly useless.
    >>
    >>750726941
I got the magazines, got a bunch of top tier food, then hid in the antique weapon shop watching TV and sipping every few minutes.

    >>750728546
Unlock Knee Drop as quickly as possible and abuse it. You can basically chain stuns on zombies and it negates fall damage if done at the right time.

    Use automatics for stuns.

    Use shotguns in general.

Do not be afraid to throw heavy shit.

Use your unlocked moves for more PP.
    >>
    >>750728696
And what do you need them for? I'm starting to think I'm retarded because I didn't even restart the game. I died while exploring trying to find people or squeeze in kills obviously but went back to saves when I thought I was too slow because it felt like cheating to just restart at higher level.
    >>
    >>750728813

    >>
    >>750728836
Quickstep lets you runs at around 3x speed. Untouchable prevents zombies, maybe humans, from grabbing you at all, Energizer makes you temporarily invincible (not the same as Untouchable). All drink effects stack but duolicates only extend the duration. Nectar is useless, do not make or use it.
    >>
This one of the last games to have a really crisp stylized UI with cool satisfying sound effects in it.

    >>

Huh. But my experience shows they're not necessary. The worst thing to me was that part where you gather shit around in Overtime and have to wait. I just stayed in Carlito's hideout and left game running.

I mean, I get it that they might be useful if you're going for save everyone but I still managed to save most I think.
    >>
    >>750728889
You unlock moves by leveling up, by killing stuff, completing cases, taking photos of PP stickers and characters, rescuing survivors, and doing environmental challenges (walk on treadmills sometime, I am serious). You can unlock shit that lets you yank a dude's guts out, football charge them, do a double lariat, or do Street Fighter moves. Best of all, they do more damage to enemies than allies.
    >>
    >>750729130

So perhaps having already played 2 long before I played OTR I was already accustomed to the change in tone so having Frank's personality change to fit it didn't feel that odd to me.
