I'm a guy and I hate the damn trope. It's always really fucking stupid and often derails you from whatever you were doing. In a game with a story it usually means you'll be hot on the trail of progress then get delayed or the ingame plan is ruined by some person getting captured and needing help because they are useless. The most laughable recent instance was in FF16 where the "heroine" gets fucking captured like twice even though she can fight, has magic, and can turn into a giant.

I think a big reason why the damsel trope died out was because a lot of the time, the girl was someone the hero had little to no connection to. I think Ninja Gaiden Black was a particularly bad case of this because Ryu didn’t care that much about the female characters, so making them characters who had to be rescued was pointless and irrelevant to the game’s plot. IMO, the damsel trope only works if the protagonist has some personal connection to the kidnapped girl, if it’s literally their objective to save the kidnapped girl, or they’re a womaniser who fucks women.
