I personally find wilderness builds with maxed out zombie population to be the most fun. It forces you out of the city until you're strong enough to clear it. When you gradually get more guns and stronger weapons. It's also fun killing the zombies. But That's just me.

Also much faster XP gains.I use a fork of the exhaustive power rework mod and my character has a duffel bag full of repair parts in the passenger seat of his pickup truck. Every couple of weeks/months depending on wear and tear, I'll load up the truck and do my rounds across the county repairing substations while I'm armed to the teeth with my suppressed AR-15. Then I'll head back home and do more construction or remodeling on the home, or tend to the garden. Occasionally taking a vacation day by going to clear out some town of zombies and to find more resources. I recently just had Christmas and had ornaments set up on a tree by my base, as well as wore a Santa suit. Threw on some youtube Christmas music while I worked. Snow blizzard came through shortly after. Was great.It's like complaining that a bucket of toy soldiers is boring when you're a kid. Some games require you to have some imagination.

I like to have a collection of cars at the base that I routinely work on, and I like scavenging parked cars for parts. The game is more fun if you're a formidable foe, but having to still be on your toes and enter dangerous places.

I'm usually pretty lucky in my playthroughs, but my last run through with my nephew I wrecked the vehicle I liked and realized I was going to have to soon abandon it because apparently I hadn't found the recipe. However, this just gives me a drive to search everywhere. I've had playthroughs where I really wasn't needing anything and it quickly got boring. Gotta keep that dopamine hit waiting for you in the next town.
