Having grown up in the 2000's one of the most refreshing things about the tech at the time is that it felt like it served experience of the console and wasn't primarily meant to push products onto you. A lot of download only games on console underperformed in that era and there's a lot of XBLA/PSN/WiiWare games that aren't discussed and are otherwise hidden gems. Outside of mere purchasing however was the aspect of it feeling like a lot of design philosophy in games was catered around an in-person experience. Networked mutiplayer games had to work locally too and many multiplayer games had this functionality as a result. I never really cared for splitscreen experiences at all, but having your own console and a network to connect to for multiplayer made it really its own experience.

The really cool and fun thing is that you can still have this experience with the consoles of the era. Most of the consoles from this time with Internet functionality have some sort of third-party server replacement and I find that my favorite parts of my weekend include turning off my computer and phone on Sunday morning to play either my Wii or my Xbox360, completely otherwise disconnected from social media or responsibilities. My only regret is that I had more room and had people to play the games with on Sunday mornings as well.
