Belmont's Curse is fun so far. Music is the only thing that feels like a step back

Belmont's Curse was awful. I don't understand how people are enjoying it, so many rocks for brains out there.

I don't acknowledge the existence of Belmont's Curse, I've been playing Bloodstained and replaying through some of the classics again, been doing Adventure Rebirth recently, trying to get a hard 1cc run, very fun game.

SCIV plays completely differently to most Castlevanias, that's why it's a terrible game to start with and why SCIV fans usually aren't real Castlevania fans.
    >>
    >>750692539
Rondo's great, you'll enjoy it. Ignore this guy >>750693650 and his schizo posting. SCV IV might have aerial adjustments after a jump and an eight-directional whip, but the rest of the Classicvanias won't be some miserable, alien experience for you. Just keep in mind that most Classicvania games want players to be much more committed to jumps and subweapons are the main way of attacking in different directions and you'll be fine.
    >>
    >>750693847

    >>
    >>750692539
You should honestly probably play Castlevania 1 and Castlevania 3 (JP version with a translation patch) first, they're the start of the series after all. They're also just better games, Rondo I think is genuinely one of the worst designed classicvanias in terms of level design. It's got good boss fights and that's about it. For as much shit as 4 gets I don't know why Rondo gets jerked off so much, at least 4 has good and interesting level design, I find it much more fun to replay. Though Bloodlines is probably my favorite classicvania.

But it has whip swinging and its incredibly badass.
    >>
    >>750694246
SCV IV is a good game, whether or not it's typically seen as among the best Castlevania games.
    >>
    >>750695191
SCIV's whip swinging is incredibly basic and it can only be done on designated swinging points. Bloodlines' whip swinging is a fully context-insensitive mechanic, since it can be done from the underside of any platform with no handholding.

    >>750695917

    >>

CotM is very paired down, there's no weapons to find and the DSS cards are enemy drops exclusively, so the hidden rooms only have MP, HP and heart upgrades as rewards, but sometimes they also have unique monsters with unique drops. The vertical platforming is kind of prevelant throughout the game but there's plenty of corridor zones too.

    >>750663416
Belmont's Curse is alright. Getting a new full-blooded metroidvania is always nice. Presentation-wise it's solid aside from the music (which is admittedly a major negative). There's some cool ideas like having tarots act as both sidequests and spell unlocks. But there's a lot of things holding it back.
For me I think the biggest complaint is that it's structured to be challenging but the actual content isn't.
On the default difficulty you only have 3 potions and have to backtrack after you die, okay sure. But almost all the bosses are a total pushover. The one somewhat challenging boss in the game is the Joan refight. It really disappointed me that of the four stained glass windows, only one of them was a boss, and she is the first one you unlock.
There's different weapons but once you get Vampire Killer (which you get during the story) you have no reason to get anything else, it's far and away the best.
The charms are mostly garbage and there's only a handful that actually feel like they do anything. You never unlock any extra charm slots so you're never incentivized to experiment.
There's no higher difficulties, only the option to customize settings in the menu which is fucking stupid. Why should I have to design the difficulty instead of the developer? It's such a lame copout.
The powerups are on the whole uninspired and poorly justified. For example after defeating Death, Rose is suddenly able to double jump because Leon tells her she's powerful enough to do it now.
Also I found the story overbearing. Most of the dialogue is very cliche and on the nose and could have been cut.
    >>
    >>750704321
Belmont's Curse has pretty lame movement tbqh she never gets fast or especially agile.

This game is a trip and it's freaking huge. I still haven't beaten it but I've got to be on the cusp at this point.

Tried my best to play completely blind so the bulk of that playtime comes from exploring and trying to solve puzzles. When you discover certain things it's really like "damn they really hid the fck out of this..."

Without a guide, the game really does take a long time to figure out. I still had to look up a few things. Last night I finally completed all the stained glass challenges after realizing there were arcanas I just straight up didn't have and had to go hunt them all down.

The map seems to be completely explored and I'm pretty sure all I need to do now is fight dracula... but I have no idea where he actually is so today I have to go hunt for him.

Work on the eyes in spots where you'll have a comfortable amount of room to dodge without their projectiles being launched, then focus on the black core. The Bone Dragon King flying around is invincible, so just avoid it.

Rondo is the GOAT Castlevania. Admittedly there's a number of games I need to check out but I really can't imagine anything topping it. The controls, the music, the branches, the secrets, the difficulty curve (with 5' being a NG+ only gauntlet that knows it's hard enough to not even need a boss). Dracula being stupid easy is really its only issue but the way Symphony retells it as Richter & Maria curbstomping him together while Alucard's fight with him is by far the hardest thing in that game kind of makes up for it.

SCIV definitely feels like a game built to take advantage of the hardware primarily since it was a retelling of the first game. Swinging, rotating rooms, chain dangle, visual effects, more mobility overall, moving platforms, insane use of sampling in the OST. I think it has high highs (Simon's Theme kicking in on the final phase of Drac is still one of the best moments in the series) but it also is a bit too long with a slow difficulty curve and once its cool tech sets in they kind of feel like gimmicks compared to what Rondo & Bloodlines did. Granted Dracula's Curse also kind of has a similar but less-pronounced problem where they got vertical scrolling and multiple characters working and leveraged too much into that; Sypha, Grant & Alucard can just trivialize different parts of the game for you even on the skewed US difficulty with Trevor only being useful for brute-forcing skeleton heads and axe armors without using hearts (which really only matters if you're saving them for Sypha to delete bosses or Alucard to skip platforming). They're both great games but lack the focus of the original or the refinement of Rondo/Bloodlines (granted yes Maria is just Sypha with a better basic attack in exchange for more expensive subs but you commit to using her only instead of being able to swap back to the Belmont whenever for more health and range).

I wish Dracula X Chronicles looked better because it legitimately fixes the issue of Dracula being too easy by giving him one of the coolest fights in the series (his third phase), also Stage 5' is much better in DXC imo, in Rondo it was an asset flip but in DXC it's a brand new stage (which is harder) and the Hydra is one of the coolest Classicvania bosses pre-Curse of the Moon.

    >>
    >>750717920
    It uses their psp emulator.
    >>
    >>750724719
It adds more enemies and a stricter time limit on levels, I would say it does a pretty good job upping the difficulty.
    >>750724947
I get it not being someone's favorite, X68K is mine, but I just feel like the complaint that IV having perfected the controls being somehow bad is such a bizarre complaint. It's beyond stupid I almost feel like people hate on IV since it became a popular discussion piece after the AVGN video series. A lot more people then I ever expected seem to have been introduced to the series that way.
    >>
    >>750725626
It's a nice one-off but it didn't perfect the controls, I think Bloodlines and Rondo feel better to play even if they lack the full directional whip.

Not really. Grant's stage is a distraction at best and the Alucard stages suck ass. Rondo has multiple paths within the stages themselves, alternates bosses within a stage, and then the alternate stages themselves which also have alternate paths. 3 doesn't even compare

Also backtracked with the ground slam and have unlocked the boss that required the 3 eyes relics but he was dealing a lot of dmg (and frankly even clearing the eyes took a lot of effort) so i guess he is somewhat of a later (optional?) boss

SCIV didn't perfect jack shit, it scrapped the OG controls in favor of something else entirely, and what's worse is the thing it came up with was more boilerplate and less interesting. If you want to name a game that evolved the NES controls then you could have named Rondo or Bloodlines instead.

On PC the collection also seems to have sound issues that haven't been fixed yet, even worse, you can't rebind the keys when playing on keyboard, and the default control schemes for games like IV and Bloodlines are kind of awkward.

The music wasn't as stand out as other games, the weapon system/upgrades were lame, and the battle/puzzle rooms to get trinkets were serviceable but I could see why people don't like them.

I've been listening to Belmont's Curse's soundtrack and, even though I admit is not as good as what we were used to, it's not as bad as some people have been clamoring, either. It's mostly the level design changes, extra enemies like Medusa Heads in some rooms, and changes in enemy behaviour, like the Red Skeletons only last 2 seconds dead before they revive.
    >>
    >>750741782
ReBirth is one of the most replayable games in the series, the way it expands the Rondo key mechanic to actually branch paths within stages in meaningful ways makes sure of that. Plus you could use Classic Mode since it makes it control more like the 8-bit games and limits the subweapon lineup to what Belmont's Revenge had.

    Genuinely and unironically this.

The way people complain about how many games are about Simon is bizarre. It's not like all the games with him are 1:1 copy pastes, why the fuck does it matter if the game is just "Dracula is back, Simon has to kill him now" again?
    >>
    >>750742565
Sort of. Bloodlines US normal mode is Japan's hard mode and the US version's hard mode is exclusive to it.
    >>

The Bloodstained Curse of the Moon games handled alternate paths in a similar way.
    >>
    >>750743783
Yes, you did. Maria isn't an easy mode even if some retards claim otherwise.
Richter has twice as much health so he's easier to face mash through the game with if you know how to abuse i-frames.
Maria's double jump makes platforming easier, that's her main draw. If you're good at platforming and don't need that as a crutch, then she's not better than Richter.

You're genuinely retarded. If Maria was an intended easy mode she would be available at the start. You have to play through two fucking stages to get her.
Calling her an easy mode would be like calling the partners in Castlevania 3 easy mode because most of them are better than Trevor.

I've finished nearly every classicVania game (except Legends which I haven't played), finished SotN, finished the 2 PS2 games, and finished Belmont's Curse. The only castlevania games I haven't played at all yet are the N64 ones, the GBA ones, and the DS games. I played a small amount of Judgement and it was mid

Just finished ReVamped. It's okay, even good for a fan project. Can't really say it's a good metroidvania, more like linear levels with some crossroads. Controls sometime feel wonky (I've played Switch version). Finished 100% run, not even gonna bother with 2 hours and 15% run.
Going back to finishing Anniversary Collection. Held a really high hope for finally understanding what people find so compelling about SCIV but gameplay feels.. I don't know, whatever. Yet the art direction and soundtrack are really great. But I've lost all the interest somewhere near the dungeon level and just savescummed through the rest of the game.

I just tried both myself and Chronicles 2 actually feels kinda decent, and a bit more akin to normal castlevania with hearts as subweapon ammo, but both EXP and money being their own separate things. You also start with a knife subweapon and you can slide. Townsfolk dialogue is different and a bit more useful, and map layouts are also altered a bit (there's no death pits via the starting town waterways for one). I can't tell, but I think Chronicles 2 also doesn't use a day/night cycle weirdly enough? I got shitwrecked trying to get past the damn fishmen in the river, so I'm not sure how the rest of the game fares or if I am right about the day/night aspect or not. Simon's Quest Revamped fucking sucks though, it plays like a literally worse version of the NES game, which I didn't even think was possible. It's also way too faithful for its own good, save for having save points (which Chronicles 2 also had). One thing that kinda sucks about both is that neither has the option to quickly drop down stairs by holding down+jump for about 2 seconds, which was in the NES release.

There's also a 3rd fangame I just now learned about, called Simon's Quest Rebitten, and the dumbfuck who made it is actually charging 25 bucks for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdVbC-xALd8 Seems like it makes a bunch of weird and dumb decisions just for the sake of doing so, like sharply reducing visibility during night, and making simon's walk cycle look like those fucking "higher frame count" gifs/webms that get parodied (and yet the enemies and NPCs have the same 2 frame cycles from the NES). Like come on, Rebitten dev. Get the fuck outta here with this bullshit.

It's a good remake, I think it adds a lot to the experience, Stage 5' is better than Rondo's, and the new final boss is one of the best fights in the series, also since the game is 2.5D it experiments a lot more with camera angles, like in the raft sequence in Stage 4', that said the game looks way uglier than Rondo by comparison and doesn't feel as good to play imo, I'd say try it out though, I think it's worth it.

Beat Belmont's Curse and got the true ending. Gotta say, the game was pretty ass.
I don't know if it were paid shills or what that were peddling the idea that this game is hard, every boss got owned by me spamming the fist arcana and took no more than 2 tries (thank fuck, the runbacks seem awful), it's definitely easier than PoR and OoE.
    Music is an absolute travesty
I swear that nobody playtested this game outside of short individual segments, the sheer volume of spike rooms, forced combat encounters that spam the same enemies over and over again, the horrific hall of mirrors warp system. Surely if someone on the dev team experienced this in full they'd think twice about keeping it the way it is.
The weapons outside the whip and straight sword feel pretty bad, especially the twin blades and fists.
Exploration doesn't feel very rewarding since the trinket slots are so limited and most of the trinkets are boring and shit (wow just like Blasphemous).

I honestly hope this game bombs and kills the series. I'd rather Castlevania not get another game if this is how it's going to be. If this game is gonna copy Hollow Knight instead of being an actual Castlevania game, it could have at least had the decency to be a good HK clone.

I think the best fan games I've played is LeCarde Chronicles 1 and 2. I think they're pretty famous among the fans. First one is janky af especially in terms of controls but feels like a proper Castlevania. Can't remember if I've managed to beat the final boss tho cause that fucker was buggy and not well tested. The second one is good metroidvania.
