Which is better game design?
>actual numbers don't matter just the system itself

How does your MP regenerate?
If it doesn't outside of resting or finite potions, then do you have the chance to rest outside of an encounter, or only when safe? (like in town)
Do you have other abilities to go along with your fire spell? Maybe you only have a staff or dagger like so many games put onto spellcasters.
For the left system, is there a reason to use anything other than Fire? Maybe a 5 second buff that increases fire damage for 5mp, or a cheaper alternative that deals less DPS for a longer period.

Overall, I think MP works better for more situations to encourage players to make nuanced decisions, but cooldowns work for action games where you don't think about resource management.

Or in other words, Left is for RPGs, Right is for Action Games.

The numbers don't matter. Just tell me which one is better.

if the number doesn't matter then the difference between them doesn't matter

anon was asking good questions like "does your mana come back" because its important to know if you're depleting a finite resource.

for the sake of argument, im ASSUMING you mean that the mana regens at 1 point per second, so after the first burst, you're basically still just casting once every 10 seconds.

in that case, the mana is better.

if mana comes back with potions, or post battle, the recast is better

you've given us fuck all info about your question, and are demanding a yes or no answer, which makes it hard to give advice.

got it. Troll. Carry on then.

woops took a shit and forgot about the thread

>How does your MP regenerate?
slow passive regen that isn't gonna be too reliable in a fight, you'll get your stuff back via items or other abilities
>If it doesn't outside of resting or finite potions, then do you have the chance to rest outside of an encounter, or only when safe? (like in town)
if you're in a non-combat zone you'll get your mana back automatically
>Do you have other abilities to go along with your fire spell? Maybe you only have a staff or dagger like so many games put onto spellcasters.
spells and some unique abilities cost mana but regular melee moves have their own stamina bar that refills much faster
>For the left system, is there a reason to use anything other than Fire? Maybe a 5 second buff that increases fire damage for 5mp, or a cheaper alternative that deals less DPS for a longer period.
different equipment sets will favour other spells, sidegrades can also be useful depending on your playstyle. limited number of spells can be "equipped" at once so maybe the fire spell won't be included in the first place especially if the hypothetical game is balanced enough to have multiple viable builds.
I didn't really have a game in mind when asking the question but I guess I was subconsciously thinking of my own ideal fantasy game which lines up with your conclusion

also forgot to mention in regards to the cooldown system some abilities could have "charges" attached to them where you can rapid fire them without invoking a cooldown until you use up all the charges, to emulate spamming some low mp cost spell of course. Once you're out of charges you'll have the wait for each individual charge to sequentially finish their cool down
>>
>>750662610
Cooldowns kind of piss me off. If I want to dump a bunch of resources into a fight why shouldn't I? Cooldowns also just encourage boring 'rotations'.
>>
>>750662610
First as default with an optional talent you can pick to turn it into second.
>>
>>750665828
That's not possible without context behind it. If you solely focus on your scenario then the left spell cast has exactly 10 uses while the one on the right has infinite uses making the one on the left completely pointless to ever pick.

Once you add context even as basic as MP potions then the left will always win out. The one on the right would need to do 3x the DPS as the one on the left to even remotely justify itself and that would just be the same as casting three of the one on the left anyway.

Suikodens rune system
As the character levels up they'll be able to cast more spells from the rune
tier 1, 1 lvl 1 spell
tier 3, 3 lvl 1 spell, 1 lvl 2 spell
These cast limits would only reset after resting, if you were using spells it was normally during a difficult fight
