Silent Hill literally exists because the console couldn't render more polygons than were 10 feet in front of you.

My god. Can you pull something more interesting to say out of your ass.
You guys would make great holy rolling Christians because you just throw out these nonsense terms and say they're self evident and refuse to explain what they mean. You actually call it "soul".

>every single game is silent hill
Every game having a shitty haze on top of everything is not the same as SH fog you tremendous subhuman fucking retard.
Also SH had good contrast and saturation both in front of the fog and during night / otherworld sections.
>>
is the point of this thread "i dont like fog"

Someone being able to string a sentence together longer than 3 words isn't AI.
Please try to assemble some kind of argument before I report your posts for extremely low quality.

Literally every game used to do this.
When I say literally every I mean basically literally every.

A brief introduction to video games and the history of computer graphics is that games couldn't afford to compute lighting in real time, so they aimed for "realism" that was dark and murky and brown and occluded everything far away as much as possible.

That was the story until about 5 years ago when people started getting good at real time reflections and then suddenly everything was shiny.

If you hate fog that much then you'd put a gun in your mouth 20 years ago.

"Whataboutism" isn't an argument but it's just evidence that /v/ has extreme tunnelvision and will refuse to acknowledge things like this.

Regardless, why is this a problem?
Why is this bad?
Do you know? Do you know why you think the things you do?

Air has matter and little particulates so nothing in real life is 100% clear.

Whatever "soul" means, we can confirm that it doesn't mean old and it doesn't mean realistic. At least until some other denthead says something contradictory that makes absolutely no sense.

Maybe you should get out of the polluted shithole you live in, Rajesh.

Soul means good contrast and color, and not washed out hazy shit, retard-kun.
>>
>>750658818
Why he is retarded? Believes that the sun changes color when it goes down every day.
Shocking that these people know how to use keyboard..

Okay fair enough though these images look like Mumbai or the LA congo because it's misty 50 feet away.

lol no

And soul didn't exist at all until recent history.
I'm just trying to get this nonsense straight.
>>
>>750659271
It's slight but it's more washed out the further away it is.
Also notice how this is one close up camera angle focused on one area specifically.

The PS2 was a big moment for graphics in general so there was far less of this.
So I guess soul was absent to begin with and then came and then left again.

I don't know which games these are except for FF7 and I know of no examples in recent memory. /v/ claims this indicative of gaming in general.

Another one.

>Regardless, why is this a problem?
For the same reason why piss filters were widely mocked and derided 10 years ago. The abuse of volumetric fog to mute colors and add visual noise to areas where fog has no reason to be present makes for worse, unifying visuals that helps remove the game's visual identity and indicates poor art direction.
>Why is this bad?
See above
>Do you know? Do you know why you think the things you do?
I'm sorry if you don't and just blindly defend every decision the devs make
>realism
Fuck realism but this much fog isn't even realistic anyway.
>>
>>750656429
The cliffs/rocks on the bottom pick are horrid. Waaaay too much LOD. I dread to imagine how that shit looks like on low res.
>>
>>750659782
I'm not blindly defending every decision that every developer makes.
I'm actually not even making an argument except for the argument that this fundamentally makes no sense.

/v/ generally calls everything old from Crash Bandicoot to attempts at hyperrealism like MGS "soul" and everything new "slop".

Apparently there's some kind of logic to be found here. I've never even heard of any of these games but at least they have more than one example.

When you ask why this is happening, my response is "I don't know". Maybe there are once again way more polygons so they once again need to occlude things that are far away for the sake of performance.

>Be me
>Making cool procedural planet with AI with real weather patterns and shit
>Working on vegetation for it, want them to be more realistic
>Lazily ask it to "make it look realistic a distance"
>It fixes some of the LoDs but also adds a bunch of anti-soul gas that makes things feel sad
Why is it so engrained in game dev practices that a machine spits it out without being asked?
>>
There are multiple things going on with modern graphics besides distance fog. For example here there is no fog, it's some kind of shitty rendering technique that makes 3D objects look washed out in general, that's why it looks like a haze on top of everything.
Then add distance fog on top of that and then add volumetric fog and it starts piling up.
I really don't understand how devs don't notice this stuff.

My god Milds is so fucking ugly I want to kill someone.

I think "gamma" is the general term for contrast.
I'm pretty sure they noticed it, I just don't know why they're doing it to begin with. Smear vaseline on the screen and it looks more real because what's wrong is less obvious. Maybe.

They key term for some of these could be "Nintendo Switch".
>>
>>
>>750660495
You can potentially fix gamma with calibration in post, but this is not it. This is something at the rendering level that actually washes out the image in a way you can't really recover after the image is rendered. The MHW pic I posted had to be fixed with AI because contrast and saturation sliders weren't enough.
>>
>>750656429
These are bad examples as they are all from areas where you would expect to have mist or dust/sand.
