Late game is getting pretty crazy.
Also, patch notes.https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/499170/view/698779962638862347
This is where I'm at.
The w*tness was mechanically easy, you just draw lines. In this I see some dudes in 3d space with some clunky faraway fixed perspective. I don't really want to fight loosely defined depth and height levels. Why should I pay the asking price?
put beam on head?

Unrelated to OotSS but Jon, Sausage Roll Stephen and a bunch of indie puzzle fags have been posting about this puzzlescript game all day. Some of you might find it neat.https://late-nine.itch.io/key-lime-slime
>>750652161I played this one earlier today. Got the gold trophy. Pretty neat.

>>750652161Got it. Tricky little puzzle! Not as hard as Jack Lance's stuff, which is still as hard as I've ever seen puzzle games get.
>>750646804I don't like the UI on these. They don't communicate their concepts clearly enough
>>750642930My guy why you posting electrical engineering shit. I thought we were in for some zachtronic ludo again, but guess not.
>>750654796>he doesn't know
>>750654573Puzzle design has gotten to sterile which makes it way too easy. As soon as you open that door where it forces you to pick up 2 keys at once it's just clearly bait and also a forced tutorial.
>>750655213It's just a classic expectation-subverting concept, with a couple layers of complexity to unpack. I'd say it's about as hard as some of the medium-difficulty OSS puzzles which test you for better-than-naive solutions.
>>750654430I just think devs find it delightful because it's very obvious the idea must have come from an accidental bug where the "key above head" sprite didn't get its collision disabled and the dev took that happy accident and tried to make a puzzle out of it.

>>750658286I was skeptical that I'd want to play what amounts to a complete second sokoban game after wrapping up the first layer, but world/layer/act 2 has been great with tons of fresh ideas. I'm a little over beamcasters at this point, but the other three axes felt really strong. I'm also really enjoying the overworld audio logs in this portion of the game, which is not something I ever expected to say.
What's the kind of logic where it's not really so much complicated as it is just spotting the gimmick they never talked about before Most of the puzzles feels like that
>>750655345Yea but I don't even feel like I'm solving the puzzle. I'm just reverse engineering what the dev was thinking when he designed to puzzle to come up with the solution.

Has there been any update since launch that actually fixed something significant and wasn't just "patched [creative solution] for anti-fun reasons"? Been holding off on updating but also haven't really encountered any bugs either.
>>750664053Nah that is layout/place and route level not netlist level, and also not trinary or above. Think of cmos transistor diagrams but simplified so that the gates are more generic and will allow source->drain on a myriad of conditions specified by the user. Didnt account for things like parasitic voltage and only had a very basic representation of weak/strong transistors. I did play chipwizard and thought it was pretty good, but could have been more realistic. Actual place and route is kind of a fun puzzle on its own when its on a small scale, and the size constraints would have translated perfectly to zachtronics design philosophy.
>>750671637The layer 2 and 3 subtitles for the audio logs were completely fucked and out of sync for the first 5 or so days after release, and the skipping stones level had issues for multiple patches in a row. Other than that I don't know of any issues first hand that have needed to be fixed, outside of exploits and unintended solutions.

Bard + Stonesi think i would like a hint pleasenone of the previous levels leaves a hint what to do herewith only one stone the is no way to get on the lily, then i thought of some sort of push with the bard but at most it can "jump" from a stone to a lily 1 tile but it doesn't generate any momentum
The map better expand like in elden ring

>>750685981>>750686028It used to look different. I remember the island up top being bowl-shaped. I guess we all found an easier alternative solution that they didn't intend.
>>750685981Also, thinking this through, the adjustments they made to the upper land mass really, really help drive the point home after the first trick.

the lategame audiologs about god and shit feel a little hammy. I know jon is a born again whatever these days but my dude...
>>750687793I interpret the audio logs as a character telling me how they feel, and not as the designer telling me what the world is.This one from the beginning of the game was just picking up from where The Witness left off."Instruct me, for Thou know'st; Thou from the first wast present, and with mighty wings outspread dove-like satst brooding on the vast abyss and mad'st it pregnant: what in me is dark illumin, what is low raise and support; that to the highth of this great argument I may assert eternal providence, and justifie the wayes of God to men." - John Milton, "Paradise Lost"
>>750688065The endgame audiologs clearly represent Jon as the acting director or whoever describing to the original audio message narrator his process for designing and combing "warehouses". Ultimately, he says, this is for the glory of God. Maybe he means God in the sense that Einstein meant God, or the sense that Feynman meant when he spoke of Nature as a Her, but this provincial, denominational theism stuff is getting really annoying.
>when the jon blow self-insert says "here's the thing..."
how to get there?
>>750688149Sounds to me like you're being a little presumptuous. People used to do something similar with The Witness; they would encounter a couple of quotes from scientists in the early audio logs and instantly conclude that Blow was trying to assert a naturalist worldview, which obviously was not the case.

This game is more simple, but without sacrificing being interesting.>is this shit about reading books about electronics all just exaggeratedYou could benefit from knowing what a logic gate is only in 4 late game puzzles. The game doesn't teach you that, outside of hinting at what might be going on with the area's name. But that's not even a mechanic, just an emergent property. As for the actual mechanics, it tend to do a good job letting you discover them.

I legitimately don't see how this part of the underworld is possible. The only way to get the crystal is to put the mirror in an unrecoverable position. Then, the crystal is too short to bridge the gap between the two grate platforms.
>>750711840I just did this a few hours ago. You are likely overthinking it. Hint: You don't need to get mirrored near that elevator.

But I can't get the crystal and the mirror down into that spot together, at all. They're mutually exclusive, so far as I can tell.
>>750712248Okay, I got it. I don't know if any other part of the overworlds[/spoiler] require both a mirror and reset simultaneously.
>>750712212I know that. You can make something that "computes" out of many things. In fact, this is done in this game using beams, buttons, and rocks, plus a cart as a clock.https://youtu.be/8taEllwQ2iEhttps://youtu.be/8BOvLL8ok8I
>>750711987Yes, that's the right end goal (although iirc someone found an alternate unintended solution to this level). It's difficult
Why the fuck did this moron add a teleporter for a game crash after the credits? It made sense in The Witness because the after restarting the game you could find the real ending at the start but it makes zero sense in this game.
>>750712829There should have been a fade out or level completion sound or something at that point. A lot of people in the discord were posting crash reports there

>>750655021thanks for posting this picture, I will uninstall immediately, I ain't got time for this shit.
>>750714597There are 4 levels in the game that look like that and only 1 of them is challenging.
>>750714174I looked up the solution to exactly 1 level out of nearly 700. however there were 3 or 4 overworld puzzles I had to look up, and I couldn't be bothered to do the second layer red overworld puzzle from scratch
>>750714597as it turns out you interact with very little of the objects on screen, it's more about figuring out what they do
>>750655021fun fact: you can find an old dev stream where jon built this level (vod name is "zachtronics")
>>750715064>2022The last 4 years have been very hard on Jon.

>>750710697she always does her level best?
why the fuck does the rainbow + yellow beam only trigger an explosion sometimes? I ruled out all the factors I could see that were different between cases where it happened and cases where it didn't (how close I was to each beamcaster, the edges of the zone, the direction I'm facing), I solved the third floor of the introductory level by trial and error.Same with the gray beam, it's supposed to activate every other beam in the zone while you're in it, except it randomly doesn't in certain positions. I see this 3x3 highlighted area around the player but again I ruled out every interpretation of it by counterexample.
>>750715924Alter-smash triggers on rubble. It even gets highlighted when you are in the alter beam. The gem beam powers sockets in its range, not the beamcasters.
>>750714649>>750714894ok ok, I won't uninstall, but most puzzles are not clever, they're just the solution scrambled backwards, and those are time wastersit's the equivalent of those modern platformers building spikes around timed jumps

is the cleric's name "aya"? there are some levels where the thief talks about how this person "floats across" stuff and is her friend

>>750717530Aiah.
this entire zone was very cute, like an actual adventure told with the level design for these heroes
>>750717237there is a red lilypad but I don't know what to do with itthe other issue with the purple beam is it gets blocked by a stone and can't even reach the red mirrorman I hate these overworld puzzles. There's too many options and too much shit you can do
>>750719802What do you usually do with lily pads? Maybe also consider the suspicious skipping stone of the same color?
>>750719619I hold that Order could have been an elevated experience if Blow spent a little more on the stories and setting. It could still have the same overall structure, but be less overt with that it's a puzzle game about Blow designing a puzzle game. More metaphor less simile.>>750719802Purple getting blocked by the rock is intentional. Look for anything red on the map for clues. You need the lillypad.
>>750719863>>750719885I can get the red lilypad into the long ass stream so it travels all the way up, but not sure what I do with it. I'm guessing I need it to transport something, but I'm having a hard time figuring out whatIt's hard to get a skipping stone onto it since there's a part in the middle where the stone gets lockedEven if I do get a stone onto it I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do with a skipping stone

is it the case that ALL of the surface-level overworld is accessible by falling from the sky, or is some of it unlocked from the underground?

>>750642930this is an ALU right?

>>750727432pretty easy if you work backwards
>>750727464I guess there must be some mechanic I don't know about because this is impossible within the rules I know. I can get the moving thing to shift the rock one tile to the right but then that just blocks both spaces.
>>750727875>I guess there must be some mechanic I don't know aboutYes, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find here if you think about what you wish gemcuck was capable of
>>750726063>Am I wondering whether this game is going to be successful?>You are asking me questions for cucks.holy fuck lmao I was not expecting this to come out of jon's mouth
I spent lots of time doubling myself with mirrors and saw two mirrors and a crystal and a wide body of water. I didn't realize infinite crystal for so long. what is wrong with me.
>>750727464I'm pretty sure the visuals are just actually wrong here, so I don't know about that advice

>>750730965oh fuck me I need to remember the area names when I'm doing this shit
>>750646804Who the fuck uses that IEC shit
>>750731246>>750731276>>750731382Am I playing the same game as you guys? I've exhausted every single possible move I can on this level and I can't do any of these things. The left rock can only be moved up because I don't have the space to position myself to push it down anywhere. Unless there's some bullshit super secret move I'm supposed to know about that I'm not using. But even if there was a way to get it all the way to the bottom, how would that even help me?
>>750731660>I don't have the space to position myself to push it down anywhere.YOU don't have to position yourself.
>>750731725Ok then just tell me what this game mechanic is that the game supposedly taught me somewhere, because the only way I know of to use this ability is to walk towards an object from 2 spaces away.
>>750731842The clanker can move you into position after you orient yourself.
>>750731467Nope.
>>750731080how did you even push that left rock up?
>click a late game audio log>"and the machine has been expanding for over 10 years, I wanted to wait more before submitting someone to the trials but I was literally about to fucking kill myself for having spent all this time on this project oh my god what the fuck am I doing with my life"you okay there jon?
>>750731894Ok that is just fucking bullshit. They could've explained this better on an easier level somewhere first. You can't even tell that's what happens because the animation shows the guy turning towards the moving block while it pushes you.
I wonder whether standing in the yellow beam and alter beam while on top of mirror shards does anything.
>>750732104discovering the mechanic was pretty simple. you already know at this point that gemcuck has issues with orienting himself when you want to use the super power. you also have a very tiny map so you can quickly explore the space and realize orienting yourself is not possible. at that point you look at what else you have (the slider) and the weird geometry you can't really use and that will lead to the aha! theory
>>750732237It does exactly what you would expect it to do
Ok my turn to bitch.I have a way to get to the button but can't get back.No crystals so only thing I can mirror is myself.Turning the beam on/off seems like it's only for convenienceI can stop the lily in motion when it's empty, but not when there's a mirror on itSending the beam or a rock on a boat ride isn't helpful.Beam pointing right doesn't help on its own, but can reflect downwards with mirror. No clue what to do with the 2nd stone. Redirecting the lily up or down after it's in motion moves the mirror out of the beam.
I am officially the most retarded brainlet in these threads. I have nearly 100 hours and still haven't reached the first ending and don't recognize 99% of the levels posted ITT.
>>750734273its ok manall part of building skill
>>750734382The worst part is it's not my first sokoban. I see everyone saying it's easy but for me it's often harder than Baba and SSR. I remember Jon saying he playtested the game with puzzle designers and they took way longer than the average /v/ player too apparently.
>>750734273You've invested over 6000 minutes into this game, and that level of persistence is commendable! Order of the Sinking Star is genuinely one of the more complex games in the genre - it's designed to be confusing with its beam tiles and multiple floors. There are no bugs here. The elevator absolutely exists and can be reached. Your BIG STARS will work when you find the right entrance. The fact that you keep discovering new areas shows you're making real progress in mapping out this space.
>>750734509i believe that when jon made that comment, he followed it up by saying that the fact the game was so hard for experienced puzzle designers is why he and the team spent the last year or two paring down most puzzles so that they were less difficult. so unfortunately not as great a consolation as you'd like. just because jack crawford says the game is too easy doesnt mean that you should feel bad about taking a while though.>>750734534dont AI-respond to the guy like that, that's rude.
>>750732814Not sure if you're asking for hints, so I'll just say that one of your assumptions is incorrect. Aside from that it seems like you understand what you need to do
>>750734273Nearly half of the playerbase hasn't finished the heroes campaign, take pride in being on the right side of the bell curve.
>>750734273The brainlets were the people who were posting in these threads on the first few days complaining that the tutorial puzzles were too hard and giving up. The main consolation I can offer is that the game stays roughly the same difficulty throughout, and there are a lot of hard ones pre-ending 1 that I still haven't solved
