https://www.gamesradar.com/entertainment/live-action-movies/zach-cregger-admits-he-was-frustrated-by-the-conversation-around-resident-evil-because-it-was-just-a-lot-about-why-isnt-this-like-the-source-material/

>Appearing on 'The Town' podcast, Cregger was asked about his foray into IP filmmaking, and whether he'd make a movie based on another property again ("I mean, never say never"). But it seems like the big hurdle to Cregger wading back into IP waters is his frustration over the fact that "all the conversation [around Resident Evil] just felt like it was about not the movie".

https://puck.news/podcasts/the-town/zach-cregger-on-comedy-and-horror-swearing-off-ip-pitching-j-law-and-handling-hollywood-power

>"I was frustrated at the conversation around Resident Evil and how much of the conversation really didn't have anything to do with the movie,"

>"It had everything to do with whether the movie was living up to the different standards that different fans of the games had, whether it was using the characters or not, or what did I get wrong in the lore, or why is it? It was just a lot about why isn't this like the source material or why is it good that it's not like the… All the conversation just felt like it was about not the movie."

>Despite these frustrations, Cregger acknowledges that he's "proud" of Resident Evil, as it's exactly the movie he set out to make.

>"I really love the movie," Cregger said. "I should have known better going into it. I should have understood that that was going to be the case, but for some reason I was a little shocked."

>The discourse around the Resident Evil movie was particularly heated, perhaps because fans have had to endure two decades of Resident Evil movies in name only. The difference with Cregger is that he knows the Resident Evil games inside out, and delivered a movie that adapted the feel of the games rather than specific characters and elements of the lore.

It’s not a pre-existing story, it’s a separate story in a pre-existing setting.

Honestly there’s no winning with fans, what Cregger did is probably the best option.

The movie was fine. It felt like an unrelated side story of something that could have been going on during the early games. I can see being a diehard RE fan and hating it as well though.

On the other hand I don't think any live action adaptation of Resident Evil is ever going to fly. The stories, scenarios, and characters are cheesy anime schlock. It works as an animated film or video game, but in live action it's just never going to fit. No matter who they cast for any of the characters it would cause tons of outrage.
>>
>>750642543
I just hate how "jokey" it is. I don't care about new monsters or new zombie rules or whatever, it just couldn't take itself seriously for 5 goddamn minutes. He shoots a child in the face and then in the next few beats, he comments about it like it's a punchline.

I was able to get behind the main character, thought he towed the line between taking it seriously and cracking jokes well enough for the tone of the film, but the Umbrella guys (both the one in the car and the ones at the lab) were too much for me. They felt like they were acting in a Nickelodeon show, the entire last act was impossible to get invested in.

Why do autists demand everything be just infinite copies of itself for eternity? You screeching retards DO realize that if you applied the SAME logic to the games as you do to the movie, you'd never have had a Resident Evil 2 that wasn't just the Spencer mansion again, and if you want to take the logic even further you'd never have had a Resident Evil 1? At some point in time, you were willing to accept something you had never seen before and enjoy it, but your autism has crystallized and now you shriek in fear whenever you see anything that dares to not be an exact copy of what you already know. You just despise attempts at originality. You have no idea what an adaptation can be. I'd hate to see your nuclear level meltdown trying to reconcile the Naked Lunch film with the Naked Lunch book, for example. If you have this kind of autism where you think "lore" is important please fuck off when the rest of us who have souls are discussing art. THAT BEING SAID, I did NOT see the movie and maybe it's a pile of shit! But you should try to be less autistic and more open-minded and I guarantee you'll be less miserable.

>>750643025
This isn't true, and that's why the original resident movies, even tho they're understood to be bad, are still better than this pile of shit.
Which is a sad thing to say, but people will not remember this movie as 'the resident evil movie' because at least the originals had jovovich in it.

It's not a matter of winning the audience at all either, fallout did a pretty good job with their series because all they did was 'keep the world, tell a different story', which has nothing to do with what happened here and why everyone is shitting on it.
You don't gain anything by creating a new random no-sense story that doesn't even tie in with the original IP, what do you think happens here?
Do you think people that like the games wanted to see this movie, after all that was shown from it was just awkward and boring and obviously was just another cash grab?
And do you think, in turn, people that might not know the games, would see this and want 'more of it' and turn to the games for it?

Look at the fallout games' popularity when the show released; this was a success.
This thing? Is not.

It was basically just a Zach Cregger movie with slight RE flavoring. And honestly it's the best way to go about it. The last movie before this was straight fucking cancer and besides that you have the "director's wife self insert" series where the characters from the games are just there to help her look cooler. They're not going to stop making movies about it so they might as well go full retard and do whatever instead of raping the characters for an 8th time.
>>
>>750642543
Why make a Resident Evil movie when the only things that are RE is name dropping the city and going to a lab? Remove any scene that mentions racoon city and there's objectively nothing about the movie that tells you it's a resident evil movie.

I liked the first half an hour, up until he kills the 2 people and then it becomes generic horror movie that doesn't take itself seriously with bad acting.

>why do you think they made 6 of them?
Because they're contractually obligated to keep making movies if they want to retain the Resident Evil IP.
It's the same reason why there's going to be a new Lord of the Rings movie about Gollum, they need to release something to retain the IP.

Making Resident Evil movies is what Constantin Films has the license for. Capcom can't make movies without their approval, buying them out which will now be expensive or if CF stops producing them which ends the contract.

Resident Evil movies are seperate from the games because of this. Capcom can't do shit about it.

It's a pointless debate because Cregger's movie is more faithful than a supersoldier mary sue or a black Wesker or a indian Leon.
>Whataboutism!
Here's the real point that people ignore or are too ignorant to see: Resident Evil 2026 feels exactly like a Resident Evil Spin-Off, where the games are typically about a survivor, they don't always survive, and they're not the main heroes of the story. The only problem with the movie is the title, and that's probably not Cregger's sole decision to make, it's Capcom's IP and they get the final decision on how to market.
>>
>>750645350
Whataboutism. Preempting the objection doesn't make it invalid. Nice try

I agree with him. I really liked the first half of the movie. That all felt really in the spirit of the games. I'd rather have that, where it replicates the feeling of playing the game rather than a straight adaptation with the characters and same story. But, I guess that's what people really wanted. Writing these kinds of movies has to be a nightmare. People don't understand how difficult it is to translate a game into a screenplay. I don't even blame them for not bothering. Especially with Resident Evil, where the plots are always retarded. Sometimes you really do have to push all that extra shit away to have a coherent story.

Same. People keep saying that the fans would bitch because "it's nothing new"... Except that a 1:1 adaptation has literally never ever been done (and probably can't even be done) so that argument is retarded.
All people want is to see the story and characters adapted without adding some OC donut steel main character, or just ignoring everything from the setting besides a few names. It doesn't have to be 1:1.
Mortal Kombat wasn't a 1:1 adaptation but it respected the setting and had the main characters actually be the main characters of the games.

Why the fuck would anyone want a game like Resident Evil adapted into a movie anyway? Just watch the far superior movies it ripped off in the first place.
>>
>>750646123
Nah. When these games released in the 90's, they were about civilians caught in a horrible situation caused by a big pharma corporation. There was no larger-than-life heroics yet. It was a survival horror series that was just a bit more action-oriented than Silent Hill. This movie isn't perfect, but it captures this better than the action movies, which always seemed like a Hollywood aberration since the very first one released (even if that one was a bit better than its sequels).
>>
>>750646345

I don't get why they want to make it happen, the games are sadly popular but I don't think its worth it to deal with one of the most autistic fanbases. That doesn't matter to studios though, I don't think the name and "series" has as much potential as they think it does.

But yes the characters, games, etc are shit.
>>
Is cregger a jew? He sure acts like it
>>
>>750646179
>they don't look like characters
And?
You're missing the point, it's not about whether the original movies were good, which is opposite to what I said in the first place (even if your reading comprehension seems to lead you to believe it wasn't), it's about how the original ones will be remembered as being the real RE movies and this new pile of shit will be forgotten within two years 'oh right, they made a new one, I forgot lol'

Nobody cares about specific characters, but also, I added the fallout series as an example because they are ORIGINAL characters, that's the whole point, you don't have to 'piss of' anyone because you can still make something original, but you need to find the middle ground between originality and keeping the core identity, which this one didn't do either way.

There is no excuse for NOT sticking to the source material after the Sonic, Mario (somewhat) and most recent Mortal Kombat movie.

>the IP
Oh, so the IP is valuable?
Why is that? Could it be that's because people like the IP? Could people like the IP because they like the stories and characters, thus being justified in wanting those characters to be adapted?
>but I, ME, MYSELF DONT LIKE IT
So what? I don't care about your taste.
>SF
The SF movie wasn't accurate at all, so that's a retarded thing to say.
>>
I liked the movie theres stuff to quibble about it being a "resident evil" movie but on the whole it didnt bother me. My biggest criticism is that while the ending sequence is funny it feels like it totally undercuts bryans hero's journey and emotional moments.
>>
>>750647161
Probably because that’s pointless as shit and none of those movies adapt a particular game

>>750646991
The games didn't even have Japanese audio until Re6.
>>
>>750642825
It's a fine movie but it's either massively overrated or overrated.
Bitching abou the lack of game characters is retarded, it works better as a side story.
Not a single monster from the games, though, that's fucking ridiculous. The movie is more like "the thing comes to town" rather than Resident Evil.
>>
>>750647260
the marvel IP is super valuable. incredibly. the movies are shit and all about it is super shit, so?
something can be valuable in money and be shit, what do you want me to say?

oh it was so accurate it even had the anime thing going on, look, its about the tone and sensibility, you wouldnt get it. im telling you, a resident evil movie like you want cant exist and wouldnt work, i wish they would so it would sink the whole thing but it aint happening that way sadly
>>

>>750647161
I like the third sonic movie but those movies do not stick to the source material beyond surface level shit. Did you forget about the black wedding in 2 and no biolizard and replacing rogue with a human in 3?

The mario movies are genuinely slop that exist only to shove references from the game in your face as fast as possible. Do not use them as an example for what to do in a game adaptation ever.
>>
>>750646401
Well, yes, there was also the B-movie horror-comedy aspect of the first game, and that was a big part of the first game's experience for people then. I forgot to mention that. So it's not "exactly the opposite." Not exactly the same either.

>>750646427
Those police were treated in a civilian sense back then. That's how people related to them. They weren't action heroes yet.

Ok, bro, don't care, not relevant to the discussion.

you haven't really made any actual arguments why it can't exist.
Mortal Kombat, in the fucking 90s was able to have a movie that had canon characters in it and actually respected the tone of the series. There's no reason RE can't have the same.
>>
>>750646262
>>750646562

>>
>>750642543

its just an inferior zombie movie with some different named characters, thats all RE is at the end of the day. a pastiche of good zombie movies with shit fanfic characters on top
its marvel shit
>>
>>750647675
Sounds like it would be pretty easy to make a faithful RE movie then.
>>
>>750642543
that's the dumbest thing to get frustrated over I've ever heard. of course people are going to question why an adaptation isn't like the source material. people did the same thing for the first resident evil movie when it came out. people did it for the weird 5th element-like Mario Bros movie.

>Honestly there’s no winning with fans, what Cregger did is probably the best option.
No there is winning. Make a movie about a game. You can take liberties it's totally fine. I would expect a RE 1 movie would need some side plot maybe additional survivors they find in the mansion to pad out the story but they never did this. Stick with a single game, make a movie about it add whatever and do that. They didn't do this. Also of course reddit faggots like you go straight to attacking fans and not the hundred billion dollar corporation behind this
>>

>>750648620
Like I said, you kids don't really understand what it was like playing the games in the 90's.

No one saw these characters as superheroes back then. Police, special forces or not, aren't superheroes. They're just people. At the start of the first game practically all of STARS is already dead, too; there was no feeling of any of them being invincible. Instead, they just felt like ordinary, trained people who had been athletes in school.
>>
>>750642543
What? How could he not see this kind of discourse coming from a mile away? This is the problem with Hollywood fags. I'll tell you why you felt shocked, Zach: you got a really bloated ego after Weapons blew up like it did, so you thought you were this creative revolutionary genius and whatever you did for RE would just be universal praise again. I usually hate horror movies with that sort of villain (a witch) because the villain's motives are always murky and their abilities are always inconsistent because the writer writes themselves into a corner, but Weapons was very straight-forward on both counts. All of the characters are trying their best to do whatever they're trying to do, even the idiots. It's a solid movie, if nothing else. You'll get bored early on if you just want to see gore.
>>
>>750649057
>How could he not see this kind of discourse coming from a mile away

>>
Make a movie faithful to the narrative parts of RE1. Add side plots like they find "survivors" who end up being Umbrella scientists who escaped the lab but can't leave the mansion due to the dogs. All but one of these scientists turns on Chris or Jill or both of them. The "good" one takes them to the lab after killing the bad ones but dies when Wesker does his heel turn. This is just one simple additional plot thread you can add to pad out the story which won't fuck with stuff too much.

They are. Video games are an embarrassing hobby for adult children who refuse to grow up.

I haven't seen the movie because I don't give money to Hollywood since I'm not goycattle but isn't this adaptation way closer to the games than the Anderson films which were basically the Fast & Furious version of videogame movies?
Same thing with Silent Hill movies, which had a single passable adaptation and then it had Pyramid Head as a kaiju-type monster because woaaah dude scary character!
>>
>>750652846
I think an RE1 adaptation is possible it's in a mansion and a lab, the closed environments would work for a movie.
>>
>>750643025
>People bitch because it’s nothing new,

When has this ever happened? Not getting a 1:1 adaptation has been, historically, the biggest criticism a fanbase has always had about adaptations in any medium. These movies aren't made for fans, they're made first and foremost for casual moviegoers and secondly for fans willing to take a look at it, because studios think a fanbase isn't enough to warrant risking millions of dollars for a 1:1. It can be argued it's a reasonable course of action, but you have to be an idiot to not expect fans to give you shit for the thing they've given shit anyone since the dawn of movie adaptations.

Also Cregger is overhyped to hell. In a time with more quality movies, his films wouldn't stand a chance.

Adapting videogame movies is pretty retarded.
Real fans won't care because movies are an inferior medium compared to videogames and the people who care are the artsy faggy types who only care about seeming superior and more cultured so they will nitpick everything while ironically being unable to understand why movies need to make fundamental changes to the source material when adapting from a movie.
The movie has done 5 times its investment and it's Cregger's third movie, so he proved to the artsy types that the best way to make a movie adaptation is to ignore the theatre kids.

The movie had everything I enjoy about RE. It perfectly channeled a lot of the vibe of the gameplay and the recurring vignettes that constantly pop up in the series.

I don't get why retards care so much about focusing on the characters and story instead, especially when the series has already had a good number completely unrelated to the original cast. I assume it's just larping secondaries, because they can more easily catch that "NAME is not in the movie!!!" by just skimming a wikipedia synopsis of the games, whereas what the movie does well requires you to actually play them to appreciate.

Modern zoomers are pozzed to shit and think everything with a story is amazing or something, I don't get it.
We used to joke about RE story all the time, and now if you do that you get hoards of mindless retards jerking off to
>ZOMG i'm an evil scientist that makes big monsters!!! now I'M gonna be the big monster and RAPE YOU!!!!!
RE has literally only won awards for how bad its story is, its never won any best storytelling awards or anything. It's soap opera shit at best, and an unapologetic joke at worst.

Which means that normies will eat the movie up because that's what normies do.
Videogame movies aren't an artistic endeavor, they are a product to make money, because normies eat that shit up.
Why would they suddenly find integrity and think that using a name for markeitng purposes is beneath them?

>>
There is no winning with video game movies because most games are just inspired heavily by movies in the first place and when you adapt them they just become pale imitations without the interactivity. When Uncharted got a movie everyone rightfully said it's just a bargain bin Indiana Jones because fucking guess what, the game is just Indiana Jones in the first place.

Fair I forgot about this but the virus didn't spread in the movie because they dropped it. That was the initial cure. I assume the Umbrella we see in the movie are just some scientists who don't know what the higher ups are up to. Almost every adaptation of anything will have changes that is just the nature of adapting something. If the movie wasn't good this thread wouldn't exist. The movie would have been forgotten about already like the amazon Yakuza show, MK 2, and the stree fighter movie that is flopping right now.

no see this is why you guys are really bad at discussing things, you have no concept of nuance. Resident Evil is a good movie despite it not just being a 1:1 adaptation of one of the games because the guy gets and likes the IPs. he made an original work using the framework of his enjoyment of the IP, hitting many of the same beats the games do. this isn't Uwe Boll making slop, or some netflix writer gutting an IP to write their own fanfiction but a well made and high budget fan film. Resident Evil doesn't work as well if it isn't a Resident Evil thing because the movie is a love letter to the franchise, with the twist being
>What if the main character of the movie was one of the guys who writes down a memo before turning into a monster
instead of being the guy/girl who saves the day.

you guys are trying recycle discourse talking points without actually looking at the thing in question
>>
Why bother getting upset about faithfulness to the games when the games aren't even faithful to themselves. Seriously, what is there in common between RE1 and RE9?
>>
>>750669870
OP is pretty clear, guy who made the film complains people want to talk to him about Resident Evil and don't care about the film as anything but a Resident Evil product. For someone saying nobody here knows how to do proper discourse you certainly don't know what anyone is even talking about.
>>
>so the resident evil movie you're making, will it be like resident evil?

RE9 is the closest we've gotten to a spencer mansion in quite awhile. even has the east wing/west wing split in the care center.
>>
>>750669993
We would have been spared a lot of trouble if Chris didn't pop up at the end of RE7. Who knows where the franchise could have went. Oh well back to Racoon City turns out it wasn't nuked after all it was bombed with thermobaric missile so all the buildings are fine and you can see all the key jingling references.
>>
I never expected a 1:1 adaptation. I don't even want one, because it'll always turn to shit, like Indian Leon or scientists dancing to Lady Gaga. But at the very fucking least, be honest. The movie had absolutely nothing to do with Resident Evil. It was its own thing, and should have remained so. Slapping on the name, and adding key-jangling references from hazy recollections playing RE4 in college, was not worth the effort. Defending Cregger and the movie only shows that you're mindless consumers that'll take any shit the studios toss towards you.
>>
>>750670043
the question was
>why adapt a thing that ignores what people like about the IP
but it doesn't do that. it very much understands what people like about it, and uses it in a smart way to make a good movie. the problem/misunderstanding here is that the guy I'm replying to thinks memberberries and invoking the same characters and plots is what makes the franchise good, when that only really applies to secondaries who got into the franchise via fandom. the series is very mechanically driven, so to adapt it to film one must try to adapt what you get from the ludo narrative of exploring these infested areas.
>>
>>750669993
It is a bit silly with RE. As someone who actually enjoys the storylines:
>RE1 and 2 both lack a canon route
>RE3 blew up the city just for fun, nothing preceding it even remotely implied this was the case or would happen (there's plenty of post-RE2 media that is pre-RE3 that asserts RC was, at best, burned down by a combination of military forces and Umbrella soldiers)
>CV revives Wesker out of nowhere and turns the series into a tokusatsu
>Zero just casually completely changes the geography of Raccoon City, what several characters did just before RE1, the timeline of RE1, and introduces a dozen contrivances for RE1 with what it decides to rework about Rebecca
>RE4 just completely ditches the ongoing story to do something else and the series literally never recovered from this
>Umbrella Chronicles rewrites every game it includes
>RE5 retcons Wesker again, but this time to make him a megalomaniacal retard obsessed with purifying the world or something, when his goal prior to this point was literally just wanting money
>Darkside Chronicles retcons the hell out of CV, it's basically unrecognizable
>RE6 creates an in universe illuminati that never existed before this point and is never referenced again AND introduces Wesker's SON, who meets the same fate
>Revelations 2 has Wesker's SISTER who literally TRANSFERS HER MIND into ANOTHER PERSON through MAGIC (viruses)
>Umbrella Corps straight up revives Wesker and Capcom explicitly said that part specifically was canon
And now the past decade has been remakes retconning everything again, with RE9 asserting them as definitive canon.
>>
RE movies usually bomb because they focus too much on capturing the names and places, not the feel.
This movie managed to capture the feeling for about the first 20 minutes before it turns into a parody of the series. If the cop lady did backflips and roundhouse kicks it wouldn't have felt out of place at all.
Somehow the horror movie manages to feel less serious and immersive than le videogamey videogame Resident Evil 2 Remake, which to me is a horrendous failure and serious stain on cregger's reputation in my mind

RE is perfectly capturable without needing a Leon or Licker or whatever. But instead we get a silly "VIDEOGAMES!" parody. Somehow I liked the movie on the way out, but the more I thought about it the days after the less I liked it. It's like a really long sketch you'd see on a youtube channel

>>750670489

>>
>>750671152
>Cregger just isn't brave enough to play something straight I guess
I dunno it doesn't come off as irony poisoned so I don't really mind it, his works do come off as genuine but he seems to genuinely like to mix levity into his work consistently. given his background in youtube it makes sense. and it isn't like a bit of cheeky fun is an unknown quantity in horror
>>
>>750671494
You're talking to the Hell-dweller himself.
>>
>>750671556
Cheeky fun is fine when it doesn't diminish important elements of the story. the whole umbrella thing was bad, it turns umbrella from this imposing mystery to unravel into a joke. If you don't want that, then don't add it. Normies won't get it and it just insults fans. the locked gate thing is far too unrealistic; the stuff with searching for ammo is great, running around the car with the zombie is great, we don't need to adapt mixing red and green herbs. I'll say it again- it feels at times like a youtube sketch turned into a movie.
>>
>>750671858

>>
>>750671152

Oh my god, someone else who thought this? Unlike you though, I started hating it as soon as he threw down the ladder. That really set the tone for me for the rest of the movie. It just could not let anything breathe without suddenly trying to insert some decaprecting humor at "VIDEOGAMES" or some quirky self digs.
>>750671556
>doesn't come off as irony poisoned
Did we watch the same movie? It can't fucking help itself for a majority of the runtime to NOT make fun of the situation in a stupid "quippy" or "haha, isn't that so stupid?!" way.
>>
>>750671972
>It can't fucking help itself for a majority of the runtime to NOT make fun of the situation in a stupid "quippy" or "haha, isn't that so stupid?!" way.
So just like any game featuring Leon "where's everyone going? Bingo?" "Your right hand comes off?" Kennedy?
>>
>>750671943
Umbrella, and a lot of RE is B-movie camp. It's absurd, but it's always played straight. It's never played as a joke. The cregger movie is absolutely not camp, though I get a sense that he actually tried to do camp with the umbrella bits but failed because he doesn't get it.

>>750672103
I can't really avoid blaming capcom a bit for RE's reputation as "le silly leon games" considering how hard it leaned into camp in RE4. It's amazing how one game in the series has this outsized influence because of how much star power Leon has.
But, to make it extremely clear to you, the answer is that camp is not the same thing as self deprecating humor. There is a difference. One manages to remain scary. The other only has value in its ability to make fun of something.
>>
>>750672316
>considering how hard it leaned into camp in RE4
Buddy, RE has been all about that camp since the beginning. Do you seriously think the scriptwriters penned "the master of unlocking" and with a straight face said "yeah, this is serious shit"? The schlocky b-movie vibe has always been part of the resident evil experience.
>>

The difference between saying a one liner in the games and what the RE movie does is sincerity. A pretty fucking clear nuance, so clear to me that it makes me very confused about why people keep spouting like it's a "GOTT'EM" defense for the movie when it's just a sign that the people who said it have no idea about what they're talking about and are actual clapping seals instead of human beings.

I mean, I am a sperg. I will be the first to admit it. It's kinda a requirement for someone to have these issues with the movie. The movie's writing reeks of someone who writes things with a perception of public coolness instead of showing off what they "love" and that kind of dichotomy just seemed really clear to me. Sorry that you don't get that.
