No but seriously, what went wrong? It can't be ALL because of Sony fuckery and the bad PC port. It's dead on PS5 too.
>>
Quite simply, because there's fuckall to do in it for the average player.
To clear up confusion, the average player DO NOT play these games online, especially not for long, because it's miserable unless you are in the FGC or have affinity to fighting games, which is actually a way more niche thing than the community wants to admit.

In order to have staying power if your game isn't called Street Fighter or Tekken is to have proper single player modes, possibly give casuals to unlock cosmetics or other things in them. But nobody seems to have figure this out aside from Mortal Kombat, so they all die after 2 weeks.

do you expect people to drop their games to grind a throw away fotm licensed game that will be abandoned in 1 to 2 years?
how is this surprising? the whole Sony shit is just a tiny distasteful drop in the bucket that is the modern fighting games

because it sucks, its not fun. its a worse version of dragon ball fighterz and 2xko

>bad PC port
Majority of fighting games thrive on PC now. You fuck up a PC port, the game is on a death sentence

>unplayable on PC
>shoddy balance
>universal routes/pressure sequences are so good most people don't lab their own shit
>too few defensive options
>jump cancels letting you do meterless assists for combos
>assist calls on plus frames being free
I've given up on playing it until PC perf is fixed and it gets an actual major patch
Really disappointed at how Arcsys said they don't want to patch yet "because people haven't discovered everything" when it's fairly obvious some characters just dominate everything
The meter exploits are also really lame

For me personally. That jump in the air bullshit.
you do a combo, launch them then in the air you jump again to extend combos. Its so fucking trash and makes the combos overly complicated.
the game was supposed to be a rather casual game but instead ends up being stupid execution all while the combo structure is the exact same for everyone.
Then you have assists spam which they are patching but its very shit.
I was playing it yesterday with a fried and it really is anti fun combat.

Another issue is on PS the control scheme is shit.
they have tag on X and unique on R1 when it should be the opposite way around but you cant flip it because square and X are the break mechanic.
Pressing square and R1 instead would be retarded.
It has too many buttons which doesnt allow enough macros.

>the average player DO NOT play these games online
I play shit loads of fighting games and I dont play online. or rarely and only when I am drunk as fighting games are the one type of game I can play drunk.
I play locally with friends.

This is it. MK has a cinematic story that hooks in the normiest of players then an infinite single player mode.
Shit i grinded MK11 for 6 months doing krypt and tower. It was fun.
Also MK CPU is hard, always cheats so its a decent challenge more better than actual players most times.
Though MK1 was a shit show.

At its core, it's the same game as Children of the Atom. 2D fighting game purists have fucking ruined fighting games. Perfect games within that space exist, there's no reason to play anything new. Make something new and creative and more eyes will get on your fighting game.
>>
Every character has the same easy-as-piss bread-n-butters that can do 60% damage without spending any meter literally just by spamming heavy attack and calling in assist at the proper time.
I've been watching fighting tournaments for 20+ years. I've never, and I mean never, seen a high calibur tournament with more perfect rounds than CEO 2026. Even for incredibly unskilled players practically any 2 touches is death.

Also the one defensive move you have is so easily countered because the counter-counter timing is like 1.5seconds long and just completely fucks the defensive player. And the shared health pool means you're just going to use 1 character, maybe 2, and the other 2 are purely for assists, instead of needing to be good with all characters on your team.

Its actually baffling how poorly designed the game is.

I actually see the vision for the shared lifebar, the idea is to avoid cases where someone gets put in sort of a "stalemate" situation, and has to make a comeback with a solo character
But because the damage is so high/conversions are so easy, and you can get proper oki if you know how to, it doesn't really happen as much as it should

The game needs a snapback mechanic though, you should still be able to force people into uncomfortable matchups/situations
