I've only played a few Atelier games but most Atelier games are part of a sub-series that consist of 3 or 4 games (2 in the case of Mana Khemia) depending on the series (the Arland games, the Dusk trilogy, the Iris trilogy etc), with the exception of the Ryza games and Atelier Sophie 2, the protagonist changes with each game but there are returning characters in the sequel. Having said that, you could start with Ryza 1 (I never played it), Sophe 1 or Ayesha for example because they are the first game in a specific series.The alchemy/crafting varies from one game to another, personalliy, I really like the alchemy in Atelier Sophie 1 for example. Yeah, if you like RPGs with an emphasis on crafting where the story and characters are secondary but gameplay comes first (that's not to say that the stories are bad or that the characters aren't memorable, I also like those aspects of the games), you may like the games.
