Fast travel, quest markers, glowing loot, map icons, difficulty options, constant tutorials, autosaves every 10 seconds...
Whatever happened to games that expected you to figure shit out yourself?
I miss when games didn't treat the player like an idiot who might quit if they get stuck for more than 5 minutes.

Elden ring exists and it still makes retards seethe to this day

Elden Ring has the baby easy mode "summons" and "ashes"
It's so easy that players collectively invented rules to properly play the game.

It's because if a game doesn't respect your time there are 20 other games waiting in the wings
At the first sign of unpleasant friction people can and will abandon ship. Look at how many people actually complete the games they own based on trophies and achievements.
This is eventually going to become a problem when the sale isn't enough and you need hours of engagement as a metric for success because they're slinging ads or some shit. This is already true for many games that function on the free or discounted pricing model that leverage MTX for profitability.
>>
Imposing a restriction on an action creates a game.
No restriction no game. Less restriction less game.

>posts one of the more oblique time wasting diegetic fast travel systems that don't just let you travel exactly where you want to go
>>
>>750632861
You are literally describing the 5 minute rule, all this shit is data tracked now and it shows if a player has any friction they will likely close the game and refund it.

Elden Ring has fast travel, quest markers, glowing loot, self-imposed difficulty options, map icons and autosaves every second. 6/7 isn't anything to brag about. not to mention the shit open world that does nothing but bloat your playtime.
>>
It's almost like there's this thing called nuance and it doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. There's nothing wrong with respecting players' time and culling the time wasting nonsense. That's also not a reason to go full yellow paint annoying hand holding tutorial popup explaining to press forward to move forward like EVERY Japanese game seems to do nowadays.

Let's be specific. Zoomers. So not really people.

All those things are OPTIONAL if you don't want to use them you are free to ignore them, outside of a 5 second tutorial at the beginning to don't have to see or use them anymore, you are NOT obligated to use them.

Fuck you.
>>
>>750632861
I think its less about giving QoL options to players and more about not needing to design the route properly. Very game with backtracking has something new for you when you go back and nu devs cant do it

During the Ps3/wii/369 era, devs realized more people dont play games than do. So for the past 20ish years now, the vast majority of games are made for peoole who dislike video games.
>>
Why even play if the game does EVERYTHING for your dumb ass
>>
>>750632861
what does fast travel have to do with respecting your time? pointless menus in menus, unskippable cutscenes and dialogue, grinding for numbers, resetting progress these are all things that don't respect the player's time but teleporting has little to do with it
>>
>>750634143
>All those things are OPTIONAL if you don't want to use them you are free to ignore them
Yes but also no, because the quests and content are designed around the existence of these mechanics. For example in a game with very limited fast travel, the quests will be strategically placed in a way that makes you explore the map progressively, but in a game with omnipresent fast travel, like skyrim, the quest will make you jump all over the place making travelling by foot just to complete a guild's questline pure insanity.

Don't know about you, but I've got this condition when I have less and less time and energy with every year that passes while having more and more things to manage, so personally I quite welcome when the devs respect my time.

The right amount of respecting your time is short/no load times, snappy menus and no "20 bear asses" quests.

I have a recent anecdote about that which annoyed me.
>Play FF7 Rebirth
>A moveable box is in the room
>Grab it and start moving it, looking around where to place it
>5 seconds pass and the game just straight up swings the camera towards the spot and tells me; "Put it here"
It is insane how afraid modern devs are of letting players be lost even for the tiniest moment.
>>
Aren't most of these features optional? Any game that's worth the price tag lets you toggle this shit off if you don't want it.

Most of the time they offer no organic in-world substitutes. A modern game with disabled markers isn't magically going to turn into Gothic, it'll just turn into a game that tells you nothing.
An NPC in those games won't give you hints on where the objective is. He'll just tell you to go get his shibbledibble, then quest markers are expected to lead you to it.

"Not respecting your time" is just a diplomatic way of saying that a game makes you do a bunch of boring busywork before it lets you get to the part that's actually interesting.

Running back-and-forth across Dragon's Dogma's shit-ass open world is a perfect example.

>fast travel
Good, running through areas you've already explored is a waste of life
>quest markers
Good, modern games have much bigger areas and denser population. Quest markers are welcome.
>glowing loot
Necessary in modern games. Older games didn't have to highlight loot, as it was easy to see it on flat surfaces and simplistic graphics. It stood out visually. Modern games have too much environmental detail where it's hard to notice ammo drop lying on the ground.
>difficulty options
You'd be bitching a game is too easy or too hard otherwise
>Constant tutorials
Only fair point to complain about
>Constant autosaves
Do you enjoy retracing your steps every time you die on a difficult fight? More frequent checkpoints are great.

>you don't have to fast travel
>every quest is just going to the opposite end of the world map to talk to one NPC and then going back to the other side of the world to talk to another NPC
I was pro shitsuno's vision until I saw the 2nd half of the game. What the fuck was he thinking?
>>
>>750637962
>What the fuck was he thinking?
That the journey WAS the content, and the NPC at the end was simply the excuse to run around killing monsters again.

You still don't get it. All this time and you still don't get it.
If it's possible to romance your male companion, this means he's a faggot. It doesn't matter that you pick the option or not, he's a faggot. Just like Kaidan in ME3. You want to romance Garrus as male Shep? Too bad, Garrus isn't a filthy faggot. But Kaidan is. Did you romance him? Doesn't matter if you didn't, he still wants to suck your cock and lusts for you in every conversation. He can never be a real bro because he's just a fag.
>hurr just don't pick the gay option with Hans it's not hard
And he's still just a faggot, which completely undoes his relationship with Henry from the first game. All along he just wanted Henry's cock in his crusty hole and that's why he was as nice as he was.

it's a different universe every game.

The logical endgame for QoL game design is ultimately just "Video games are a waste of time" so its doomed to kill everything it touches eventually. The trick isn't to remove the unfun bits its finding ways to make them fun or at least less annoying
>>
>>750632861
That would only be viable if games are still sold in physical disc/cartridge, and come with paperback manual and huge ass map.
Not to mention that thanks to the Internet, selling strategy guide is no longer viable.
>>
When I bust inside a man's ass he isn't respecting my slime hehe
>>
>>750632861
only time a game doesn't respect your time if you can play for hours and make zero progress. that's one of the few problems in Elden Ring with some bosses or you can go grind levels which is boring
