genuinely asking. what makes this game so special? I always thought it was just another bland shooter, now I see people are excited for the recomp? did it have really unique mechanics at the time of release? what makes it so different?

>>750618747It's a short and sweet Michael Bay shooter. The audio, destruction, visuals and particle design were impressive for its time. Mechanically, it's an okay shooter. Packs more punch than any shooter these days though.
it is a "spectacle shooter". they wanted it to look cool basically. it released on xbox and then like not even 6 months later the 360 released so it took them a little too long
when you shoot at an enemy's head, there's a "clink" sound, meaning you've hit the helmet, it's nice attention to detail.Oh, and good level design.
I rented it at the time. It's okay. It's attained this weird built-up mystique over time, I think because of the name and the simplicity of the action. Just shoot a bunch of shit, gets right to the point. The destruction felt underwhelming after playing Red Faction (I wanted more John Woo debris flying around and Matrix-style column destruction, but only a few parts do that). People call it "gun porn" but it's not mega detailed in that regard either. Also, no blood. It's fine.
