finally got around to playing this gem and now I understand why its beloved to so many. It just feels perfect. I tried SOTN but couldn't get into it. also, why is combat knife so busted early on? lol
>>
>>750615915
It's a damn good game. Make sure you try and get the Claimh Solais later OP. Enjoy.
>>
>>750615915
Why can't people just start a thread about this game without mentioning SOTN? Why does it always have to be "which one is better?"
>>
>>750615915
Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin are the holy trinity of IGAvanias.
>>
>>750615915
>>750616350
SOTN is better. Aria is cool too though. You should try Bloodstained if you haven't. Took me two attempts to get into it but it was pretty good once I did.
>>
>>750616398
>SotN is better
Your opinion is invalidated.
>>
>>750615915
AoS is a lesser version of SotN dipshit.

You cant down slice
Soma is a furcoat wearing fag
music way worse than SotN
bosses are absolute baby difficulty and simple (compare Legion in both games, wtflol)
no dracula, top 3 worst final boss
grindy soul mechanic, on average 30 to 100 kills to get the drop
Luck is still bugged
Not the worst draculas castle map but definitely not the best
Game difficulty easy as pie but I watched some of you casuals play AoS this month, you are literal retards, you probably think CotM is impossible tier
all animations especially enemy death animations are toned down and simplified from SotN
white bats are gay

>>
>>750616398
Why is it better
>>
>>750616536
It's more fun and Alucard looks cooler
>>
>>750616493
Imagine bringing up the difficulty in a pro-SotN post.
SotN is a stupidly easy game.
>>
>>750616493
When playing the game. It's a good idea to bar yourself from using consumables, that way the game won't be too easy.

>SotN is a stupidly easy game.
That's because you are a mouth-breathing moron who literally cannot stop himself from using the most broken gear in SotN.

>omg now I can farm the Crissaegrim!
>>
>>750616493
No, but you can do way more with lots of weapon variety with different and varying swings.
Neither are very masculine but Soma is definitely cooler with his becoming Dracula angle.
Obviously a chiptune is not going to be as good as a cd recording, that's just technical and not quality of the game issue.
Neither game is hard but SotN is likely the easiest Castlevania of them all.
Completely optional, no need to grind for anything other than the 3 special souls to unlock the final area and ending but are all quick drops.
Minor issue unless you are an autismo that must 100% a game but in that case SotN still has the same issue because some weapons take forever to drop.
The map is better than SotN, especially the reverse castle which is just shit.
And the last is just muh graphics and more technical things instead of gameplay where AoS is way better in that department.
>>
>>750616824
I farm for the Crissaegrim. You can't even get it until close to the very end anyway and it's not even the most overpowered thing you could use. Plus it's cool how it goes whish whish whish really fast.
>>
>>750616824
Sotn is easy even without op gear. You can just spam consumables whenever you are close to death.
>>
>>750616493
>>
>>750616956
You know what, you're right. Aria of Sorrow doesn't have any consumables. Only SotN has them. I stand corrected.
>>
>>750615915
Aria is objectively better as a game, but it's close. SOTN however utterly BTFOs Aria in aesthetics, atmosphere and sound so I still like SOTN best

>and sound
i ain't gonna be a retard and act like symphony has worse soundtrack somehow
but when castlevania music comes unbidden to my mind, the only representative sotn has is marble gallery, while aria has at least ruined castle corridor and top floor
>>
>>750617080
squigly fan spotted!
>>
>>750617016
Both games are piss easy, so using it as a criticism against Aria is silly. No Igavania except maybe OoE is actually hard.
>>
does anyone like castlevania for the gameplay? it's way too basic
>>
It annoys me how AoS fags completely pretend that Dawn of Sorrow doesn't exist. You're just fags that get your opinions from youtube. Besides story and characters DoS is a better game in everyway.
>>
>>750617604
What about the sigils?
>>
>>750617953
The magic seals? I don't have a strong opinion. It's a mini-game that you practice right before a boss door, it shows you which one you will need and if you don't practice it you get a harder boss fight.
>>
>>750617016
Items stock at 9 in AoS.
>>
>>750617596
I play for the castle environment and trying to figure out were to go next. I can't stand classicvanias since it's just linear levels trying not to die.
>>
>>750617604
I didn't really care for DoS. I played it once and never felt the need to replay it. I've played aria like 4 times now. I like the simplicity of it. I felt Dawn was trying too hard with mechanics and new stuff to do
>>
>>750615915
SOTN is clearly better but Aria kind of reminds me of the GBA Metroids compared to Super. They did such a great job that they do in a way feel like somewhat of an evolution at times but I still think due to the hardware they cannot feel all the way true to the idea of an evolution. Back then it was easy to think that handheld versions of these two legacy IP's would be inferior clearly to the consoles like what always happened with the GB. Games like DKC for example are far shittier on the GB compared to SNES. But CV and Metroid bucked this trend imo. They felt like proper games that could stand with the best console ones.

One interesting other game I just remembered. Sonic on the GBA is a busted absolutely shitty port. So this was often happening with handheld games vs console games.
>>
>>750615915
It's arguably like the 5th worse one
PoE/CotM > OoE > HoD > AoS > Dog Shit > SotN/DoS
>>
>>750619398
This fuckin guy
>>
>>750617604
Please say sike. Ariafags pretend dawn does not exist because it is a worse game in most every regard (spritework excluded), which reflects poorly on the first one. Consider emphasis on soul-grinding, abandonment of decent loot in favor of crafting, boring progression abilities and hardware gimmicks. It all amounts to a game that is just no fun if you actually want to PLAY it and not WASTE TIME with it, portrait art and magic seals and stupid plot need not apply.
Hey you know how smartasses always grandstand about how easy these games are, even without chugging potions? Well now you get to see how a """hard mode""" works by ignoring the upgrade system: it just takes way fucking longer. That dumbass redhead rival got the false final boss spot, and so despite having like three moves about as complex as OG Dracula, he takes four times as long to kill. His stupid HAHAHAHAHA when he teleport away still rings out in my head.
>>
CotM
AoS
DoS
PoR
SotN
HoD
OoE

CotM is at the top because the rpg elements and cards add to the game but do not rob it of the challenge, it still asks you to get good, this what most every other game does not achieve in this series. Which is a big deal for me and why SotN is so low.
AoS and DoS both have similar strengths and good variety in moves and weapons/souls/skills.
PorR is in the middle because it has some unique things going for it but the levels within levels can be a bit annoying and adds things that are good but also miss.
HoD is like a visually less impressive SotN.
OoE is the weakest because the level design is crap and the game is very easy and straightforward but the bosses are nice. Also the quest system sucks ass, as do the maps.
>>
>>750615915
Circle of the moon is better. This one is overrated.
>>
>>750615915
I should go back and play Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia again sometime. I played Aria again recently and still loved it. Playing Symphony of the Night again now and I'm less into it, it feels like it's lacking the special sauce each later entry brought.
>>
the problem with SoTN is the sections are too big and not interesting. The alchemy lab is boring and is just endless platforming, the main hallway is repetitive and takes forever to get through, the library is too big, etc. The GBA games had big sections too but they were at least different as you went through them.
>>
getting all the souls suck fucking dick with the bugged luck stat I remember spending an entire afternoon for Kyoma Demon's soul because there's fucking one of them in a room with 3 other enemies trying to hit you and then you need to wait 3-5 business days for it to come out of the fucking mirror so you can hit it only to get nothing and you have to repeat this until the game finally decides to give you the soul

Brother, game throws bunch of bs not to mention retardly high damage mobs everywhere.
>>
>>750616956
>consumable
lol you have soul steal from the beginning of the game to heal you to full whenever, it's literally impossible to die in SotN unless you limit yourself to playing on luck mode and you ban everything except red rust
>>
>>750627086
Only the secret areas and bosses are challenging, the latter often due to horrendous hitboxes (and hell, you can just heal mid-battle whenever you want unless you want the bragging rights medals). Otherwise, the game breaks even from simple shit like the axe glyph that covers a wide range, hits bigger enemies multiple times and lets you kill things above and below you from a safe distance. Once you get stuff like the triple fireball and the skelebeam it's borderline boring.

I bet you complain about using mewtwo in pokemon, too. Complain about using things tbe game gives you to use in the game. You could set yourself up for failure in any game just for difficulty, but who gives a shit? Its a fucking video game, not going to the moon. Easy or hard, its not worth doing. Get a life
>>

Much higher budget, a much longer game with more to do, much better graphics and music

>using one of the first glyphs is "mastering" it
>using comically overpowered glyphs that don't even need to be grinded and can be stolen from enemies is "mastering" it

People using the backdash probably also blows your mind.

knives are always broken on these games early on.
Basilard is broken in sotn
>>
>>750631398
>Basilard is broken in sotn
Was that the one you could block with?
Because there's a quirk with the blocking where the block acts a second hit, meaning that the weapon does double damage.
Your bare hands do this, too, so going unarmed actually does more (and faster) damage than most weapons at the start.
>>
>>750616493
>Not the worst draculas castle map but definitely not the best
Let's just admit that HoD's layered castle is the worst and leave it at that.

Dawn of Sorrow's Soul level grinding fucking sucks and half the OST is not even as good as Aria. Who the fuck would enjoy this?

Still annoyed to this day they didn't make this recognizable by Dawn of Sorrow for whatever bonus it was you get from having an Aria cartridge inserted in your DS.

The real reason it's better than SotN is because SotN doesn't have Creaking Skull
