Honestly, I like lilies more than magnolia, zombies > robots.

With that said, I still think magnolia blows the fuck out of 90% of the genre tho.

The weird mobile game animation put me off for a while but ended up loving both games. Has the dev say anything about Ender 3?

Can you elaborate? Because I found Lilies so trite I dropped it after the snow castle area and it made me immune to Magnolia shilling, but you seem to have the opposite opinion.
>>
>>750614248
Yeah I was also confused about how Magnolia's aesthetic. It's kinda all over the place whereas Lillies felt a lot like DS1 or gothic fantasy

Was massive disappointment with snarky bitch protagonist who complains about nobles. Also you get mvoement ability after first dungeon, so slow exploration
That shit after first game was horrible, not gonna lie

I feel like judging Magnolia because it's not a stylistic retread of Lilies is dumb
They are covering different things concept wise and they do it well
One being the aftermath of a fallen kingdom, the other being the last days of a land that is soon to parish if nothing is done
In the first game, you're putting the kingdom and those who spent their last moments trying to protect it to rest
The second is piecing together a kingdom that could easily end up as the previous kingdom if left unchecked
Both share the idea of people trying anything to prevent disaster only to have it happen anyway and you dealing with the fallout of that
>>
>>750616960
I think they just like barefeet lolies better
>>
>>750616960
When ender lilies was notable only because of aesthetic, you can't just change it into something inferior and then wonder why peoppe skipped it.
>>
>>750616960
Oh and Lilies is more somber in tone since it's too late to save anything other than people's souls
Magnolia is more hopeful as you still have some time to save more than just souls
This tone is shown in the art direction for each game too, with Lilies having more bleak and desolate areas compared to Magnolia which still has places that aren't completely dilapidated
>>750617005
Now that's understandable
>>
>>750617073
>notable only for
I don't think that's the case really
>>
>>750616960
>I feel like judging Magnolia because Lilies were better is dumb
No, it's not
What was the point of magnolia having dark souls roll for dodges, when it's replaced right away by better dodge after first boss? Like what the fuck.
At least in lilies, loli faceplanted into ground for around hour or two depending on your pace. In magnolia they literally did entire roll dodging animation just to replace it right away in magnolia for "better gameplay feeling", the most soulless shit ever
Entire game suffers from small garbage like that and by the time you do weeb tower and witch academias, it's just too annoying to play
>>
>>750617148
No? What do you think ender lilies does well compared to other metroidvania? The only thing I can think of is some select music.

The last zone, Verboten Domain, is really memorable and oppressive.
>>
>>750617653
>It gets good 8 hours in
>>
>>750617470
The dodge is inconsequential, it's mostly just a nod to Lilies before using the gameplay itself to show the setting and tone is different compared to the first game, done by showing how the MCs differ in ability (this is hinting at their different backgrounds and circumstances)
>>
This game shits all over troon knight, Kotama is also a good substitute until ender 3

Symphony of the Night got called Metroidvania because it used the Metroid formula with a Castlevania twist. The thing it brought are equipment you find and gain from enemies, player levels, and other minor things.
Metroid does not have any of that, so it is not a metroidvania. And actually many games people call metroidvanias don't really fit the above.
>>
>>750619284
*things
Basically it added lite RPG mechanics which aren't present in most games that people would call the same as it
>>
>>750616517
I feel having EL setting being an already doomed kingdom with an amnesiac protagonist really helped in being immersed in the setting, and slowly discovering the Blight, it's consequences and the lives it ruined lets you empathize with the characters you fight and rescue. It basically makes Lilly's journey yours because the world is equally unknown for both of us.

Menwhile in Magnolia having Lillac talk and one of the first conversations she has with her stand be "I want to save all Homunculi" just left me asking "Ok, but why?" It felt like the game failed to make you care for the Homunculi in general and Lillac having her own goals and ambitions didn't really resonate with me because the game didn't build up to them.

Seriously though, if a game has nothing SotN added to the formula why even bring up the name of the game in the genre name?
>>
>>750620262
>if a metroidvania doesn't have a ranged arm cannon weapon it's not a metroidvania but a castle-like
>>
>>750620262
Because it's extremely clear what the name of the genre is referring to in its general essence. You explore a non linear map and backtrack through it to find upgrades to unlock more of the map. I am fucking tired of genre label autists. The point of a genre title is to help group games together that play similarly in some general sense so you can talk about those games easier and recommend similar. It literally does not matter at this point if it doesn't have the absolute specifics from metroid or castlevania. You know EXACTLY what the fuck someone means when they say a game is a metroidvania and you're being disingenuous fucks by trying to play the "WELL TECHNICALLY..." card.

Fuck off with your shit. You're so annoying.
>>
>>750620316
This doesn't work because we're talking about mechanics, not items and weapons
What mechanics does SotN bring to the table? RPG mechanics
Thusly, if a game doesn't have RPG mechanics, it is bringing nothing that SotN brought to the table
Metroid brings the big interconnected maps with lock and key item progression
>>
Magnolia was good overall, and the OL-loli mc was hot. I didn't like that the world didn't feel as bleak, there were way too many npcs who were alive and doing well, so it didn't really feel like you're overcoming against all odds. Lilies did much better in this regard.

Lilies was a pretty simplistic vania, I just liked running around turning the rooms gold while listening to the OST. I think I beat the whole game using the greathammer nigga and the parry guy exclusively. This is a good MV for everyone complaining about accessibility, runbacks, difficulty, getting lost, getting frustrated, etc. This game basically removed EVERYTHING that could even be remotely frustrating for the player.

Which also means the game felt very bland to me. You're never punished. Dying has no drawback, so why should I care about my safety ? You can see absolutely everything you missed on the map, so why should I care about exploring ? The map structure is also very unoriginal, basically a big tower with paths to the left and right. Areas are all structured the same way. You always know exactly when you'll find a savepoint, or a boss, so you're never surprised. The game gives you all the cool stuff from the beginning (double jump and dash), so every upgrade you find after that feels a bit meh.

It's a very good game mechanically, combat and movement feel good. Visuals are good, story is fine. But the game lacks a soul. You're not exploring (in a metroidvania...), you're never challenged (even on Hard), never frustrated nor surprised, so basically I felt no emotions while playing this game. I was like "yeah, it's a good game", but I have no strong memories of the game after playing it. IMO, being TOO accessible, handholding and forgiving is bringing the game down (for me). But if you're the type of player who was frustrated by many design decisions in Silksong, then by all means, play Ender Magnolia, this game is for you.

Are the Ender Lilies/Magnolia devs working on a new game?
>>
>>750623615
>Dying has no drawback, so why should I care about my safety ?
That's such a weird argument.
Dying itself is frustrating, so if a game is difficult you get a lot of frustration, but you can counterbalance it with the joy of overcoming a difficult fight after many attempts.
I see no point however in adding additional frustrating elements that don't need to be there and just make the game overall less enjoyable.
It simply isn't fun having to traverse endless difficult corridors just to move from one bench to the next in Hollow Knight because there is no proper fast travel outside of the very limited bug trains.
Game devs really need to learn the difference between meaningful challenge and tedious grind.
>>
>>750623615
>Dying has no drawback
Is standard of genre since 00s
>>
>>750623973
>>750624016
In older games like all the Metroids and IGA vanias dying was super punishing, you get a game over and must reload an earlier save, losing all progress. Magnolia uses the Dark Souls system where the game constantly auto-saves on every single item pickup etc, yet also removes the punishment (losing currency) to counterbalance this kind of save system. So dying literally doesn't matter.

i think what makes those games not good can be summed up with one example, i keep finding better and different weapons that require like 50 strength, but im level 20 and all my stats are into hp, you and the devs know you cant use them, they are given you as a cruel joke, thats the game summed up

Not bad for being the dev's first game, fun bosses and mechanics also fanservice

the optional platforming challenge was actually way harder than the one in silksong

Cool game but the horrible sidequests to get 100% completion and having basically NO teleports were NOT worth it.

It was all worth it.

It's a shame Belmont's Curse was a steaming pile of shit.

I don’t care for horror. Is Silver Pines a actually a solid MV? I’m replaying Magnolia now and it’s so polished and quality. I think I preferred figuring out the plot in Lilies more though. In Magnolia, NPCs tell you everything.
>>
>>750641782
plot in Lilies is pretty straight forward it's just told in notes. Sadly some extras were only revealed in the artbook. Magnolia has a somewhat confusing plot despite being more story focused. Lilac having amnesia was totally unnecessary too.

Imagine Resident Evil set in a decently interconnected town where you get several different melee weapons that enable you to overcome different obstacles, like breaking down walls, plus a few other upgrades like longer swimming, with a surprising amount of secrets hidden in plain sight like a roof you can jump at. That's basically Silver Pines.

It's only an issue in the first few hours. They game starts throwing money and resources at you after that. Only abiut halfway through it though.

All it has is horror, horror game styled puzzles and resource management, it's just called a MV to get into the metroidvania algorithm, it's just a really solid 2D resident evil

>Elta: Defy All Gods

Just played the demo, while the gameplay is good and smooth, the visuals are inconsistent as fuck, narrative is 1/10 and UI looks like a mobile game.
Man, what an inconsistent game.

If i remember correctly the only summon that's with her 24/7 is the undying knight

>Is Silver Pines a actually a solid MV
no, its more resident evil with a lot of puzzles
the MV only comes in expiration, secrets and unlocking "abilities" to get to new regions, which just means keys, weapons etc
combat is more survival horror with ammo menagment, though you get enough to kill everything even if it dosnt feel like it

I wouldn't say it peaked here but it's def a top 5 modern metroidvania. Thank god for this skin you get from the start, I didn't have to see his ugly face outside of dialogues.
