Just a reminder monopolies are fine when it's publicly traded microsoft windows but terrible when it's privately held valve and the steam store
>>
>>750607412
how's your own steam machine going, timmy?
>>
>>750607412
They fucking botched it dude, but it was because of the market frankly. They should have just stayed silent on it for another couple of years. The tech wipeout today COULD be the bubble finally popping
>>
>>750608953

wrong, it has scared the shit out of the private equity firms because it threatens not only windows market share but xbox and playstation too - none of them have a reason to exist if gamers are all using steam machines
>>
>>750607412
it could have been decent, it just got fucked over by AI (like everything else). RAM/VRAM/SSD pricing fucked it.
>>

>Overpriced pre built
At least the Deck had portability as a gimmick. This was just a small form factor PC with SteamOS
>>
>>750607412
Because it was already out of development before the market dropped out. If they had known the market was going to explode, they'd never have bothered. They were probably angling for a $400 price tag and put 3 years into design and development before everything went to shit and they learned it would have to sell for $1000+. Not their fault, honestly.
>>
>>750614061
still shit
>>
>>750607412
>Failed despite being completely sold out and only available in single digit batches every 6 months.
>>
>>750607412
If it was $999AUD/$599USD/$699EUD/$599GBP it would have sold gangbusters.
>>
>>750607412
I would be pretty cool if it was $450. But honestly at the current price, I just took some leftover parts and got a used 5700 xt and installed Fedora workstation on the fucker for a cheap entertainment center pc, no fucks given.
>>
>>750614276
It's like Wii U; as in sold out because it sold its 1k units avaiable.
>>
>>750609093
>none of them have a reason to exist if gamers are all using steam machines
People built their library on xbox and Playstation, why abandon their library now
>>
I bought it and I'm satisfied with it. Nay sayers either weren't the target audience in the first place (same thing as with the Steam Deck), or they're still thinking with pre-aipocalypse mindset. $1,000 is gonna sound a lot more reasonable in 1 or 2 years when we see next gen console prices and Switch 2 price increase, which will still be walled gardens with $80 digital games btw.
>>
>>750611972
So it's merely a coincidence that there's been a hundred threads crying about and shortly there will be a hundred more?
>>
>>750607412
If they produce more and the next gen of consoles are priced as people are suggesting, it could still be.
>>
>>750607412
it would be but saltman & the gang fucked it all up
>>
>>750614471
You do that with every generation if the system doesn't have backwards compatibility.
>>
>>750615112
>laughing at a dead flop is "crying"
huh uh
>>
>>750615659
The last generation that did that was 20 years ago with ps3, now people built over a decade worth of games in their library and account
>>
>>750615782
What if the system doesn't have a disc drive and you bought mostly disc releases?
>>
Ram crisis killed it. Next time you see a malfoid thread be sure to give thanks
>>
>>750607412
no it fucking wasn't, All valve hardware was always niche and experimental.
They make hardware just to nudge the market in a certain direction.
Small form factor gaming PCs has been a thing since the early 00s, this hasn't even been a new thing.
>>
>>750607412
No it wasn't. It was supposed to push Linux for gaming. That's what it's doing.

It would've been a great option for non-slop non-4K gaming if it was cheap. Can't blame Valve here, the market is fucked. Though I can blame them for advertising it as 4K capable.

So, is this anime just a bunch of catgirls addicted to cigarettes?
Given how big the boom of guitar sales were after Bocchi the Rock, that sounds a bit dangerous.

yeah it's a real problem, the genetically engineered catgirl I keep chained up in my basement has lung cancer now.

ALLEGEDLY Valve is pushing for graphical fidelity in HLX after Steam Machine flopped.
>>
>>750623063
>Steam Frame users got a more optimized Half-Life Alyx for free
>Steam Machine users got nothing (yet)
I doubt they'll abandon Steam Machine right away. I still believe they will bundle HLX with it.
>>
>>750607412
The argument PC players have made for DECADES is that building your own PC is cheaper and stronger than buying a console.
Valve releasing an expensive console that is still more expensive than building your own PC and only slightly better than a cheaper mainstream alternative is beyond retarded.

Unfortunately raped by AI, we'll see if the impending crash fixes prices or not
>>
>>750627131
>muh price
This thing can‘t even run some AAA games at 1080p60fps RIGHT NOW. The performance is pathetic for a device released in 2026. You would think a pc that you can‘t meaningfully upgrade would have some performance headroom over consoles to make sure it at least lasts a few years
>>
>>750615112
Yes, the private equity cabal is attempting to cultivate negativity around the steamcube on /v/ of all places.
>>
>>750624913
Nobody with a brain would make that argument in the first place. PC gaming has never been cheaper than console gaming when it comes to hardware, literally never. In the past you could build your own PC to play similar games for similar price to a console, but it would only out perform the console at the tail end of the console life cycle. "My 5 years more modern device outperforms this old relic" is a retarded argument to make.
PC gaming only becomes cheaper when you take into account the entire cost of ownership, because consoles fleece you bad with game and online service prices and the necessity to buy new copies of your games to keep playing on newer hardware.
>>
>>750628920
>consoles fleece you bad with game and online service prices and the necessity to buy new copies of your games to keep playing on newer hardware.
This argument is actually getting worse these days though. Steam sales are pretty shit now and most publishers just apply the same discounts across all platforms. Only key resellers offer good deals. New consoles are also backwards compatible and future ones will be too. Online is paid but it‘s 60€ a year which is kinda whatever in the current market
>>
Steam machine is more than enough. It has served me well and runs my library without a hitch.
Ever since graphics and game quality plateaued years ago, and new tech being just forced gimmicks to force idiotic cattle to buy the newest gpus, not a single new AAA has been game is worth a buy.
Older games just look and play better.
>>
>>750629096
Phantom blade zero is one of the best optimized UE5 games there is and steam machine can‘t run it at a locked 60fps at any settings, even at 1080p. Even a base ps5 achieves that with better visuals. The hardware is only going to become more outdated
>>
>>750629096
That's cool and all but this is a board where we like and talk about new games often. Maybe you should get the fuck out
>>
>>750607412
Literally WHO?
>>
>>750622896
Valve needs to get rid of a few problematic employees.
>>
>>750629084
It's really not, because consoles are becoming more and more locked down as time goes on. Which means your options for getting the games are shrinking. Like for example, used games which were a huge cost saving measure on consoles have been on the way out for a while now.
It won't be long now until the only option to get games is the online shop proprietary to the console. Console user bases are shrinking also, because the economy is in bad shape. So the console vendors will have to keep increasing revenue without getting more users. Who knows how they'll do that.
>>
>>750629296
Of course gaming on console is becoming more expensive but so is everything else. The premium you have to pay to buy a half-decent pc over a console is still gonna be bigger than whatever money you save here and there on pc
>>
>>750607412
The Steam Machine itself was not, but the SteamOS it carries is.
Steam Machine is a template, and mimicry takes a bit of time, when it comes to hardware, especially in the current climate.
Overall the Success of SteamOS is quite a positive tale, and as soon as Valve and Nvidia work out the Nvidia hardware support for SteamOS, a lot of people will jump over to it. That support is estimated to arrive sometime next year.

>tl;dr it has been a success, you just misunderstood its purpose
>>
>>750629459
Wow valve can release an underpowered, overpriced pile of shit that nobody buys and it‘ll still be a success because [reasons]. Gabe is my lord and saviour

>>
>>750629407
That's the thing, though. You don't need a "half-decent PC". I have a 10 year old second computer that I sometimes play games on and it's perfectly adequate. There are games it can't run well, but there is no shortage of games it does run well. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 runs great. GTAV runs great. I'm sure lots of the ball and gun games would run great too if I had Windows 11 on it and a TPM2 chip.
>>
>>750630347
Buddy, steamos was already a thing with the steam deck. You could even use that docked. Valve didn‘t need to release the steam machine in order to make steamos public and nor will it be the catalyst if mini pcs with steamos go mainstream. The thing is pointless
