Sorry what are you saying.

1 has a fun interwoven world to explore, 3 is a straight line boss rush game where you skip all the mobs
>>
>Muh difficulty
Demon's Souls did irreparable damage to vidya.
>>
>>750607218
true. although 3 had some of the best bosses, but i would still rather play ds1/2 over 3 any day of the week
>>
>>750606997
The environments and locations in DaS3 sucked ass, it all looks the same washed out ashy slop
>>
>>750607220
Demons souls wasnt particularly difficult or notoriois, 1 started the "prepare to...LE DIE!" stuff that normgroids latched onto
>>
>>750607220
never even played it. But seriously, map aside 3 is just a straight improvement. I cant go back, 1 its too easy.
But just looking at twitch for some numbers, 3 has the worst player retention, even worse than 2 who seems to be so hated.

>>
>>750606997
I prefer DaS1's slower pace, backporting bloodborne combat onto DaS just felt uncanny. Also combat was only a small part of the appeal of DaS1, the world design both mechanically and visually were an important part of the appeal and 3 fumbled the ball on both account. It's very linear and very samey looking
>>
DaS3 is the easiest Souls game.
>>
>>750606997
because the good parts of DS3 are a solid 8 while the good parts of DS1 are a perfect 10. DS3 does have multiple bosses that far outclass anything in DS1, but in DS1 it's about the journey much much more than the destination.
>>
>>750606997
People who prefer DS1 like it for its world.
People who prefer DS3 like it for its boss fights.
>>
>>750606997
3 has great bosses but its areas are just a fucking slog
Not because of muh difficulty, I've cleared the game 10+ times along with the rest of the series
The areas are just incredibly boring and awful to look at. Everything is a muddy, ugly mess. Also the fucking swamp meme. HOW MANY FUCKING SWAMPS DOES A GAME NEED, MIYAZAKI
It has my favorite boss lineup of the series and yet it's the one I really don't like replaying.

Aside, but how do I beat Seath in DS1? Every time I die, I get cursed, and when I get cursed I get one shotted by him. It's my first playthrough, so idk if I should do him first or go through New Londo or the Giant's Tomb or something.
>>
>>750611050
You're objectively wrong
Smouldering Lake is fucking abysmal, as is Crucifix Woods/Farron Keep. Whoever designed those areas should be forbidden from working on video games ever again.
>>
>>750611210
Just run into his front left tentacle thing and he cant hit you. His front left, so your right. If youre not interested in cheese then good luck hes a bitch
>>
>>750607958
>using twitch numbers as an indication of anything
Desperate.
>>
>>750611210
The best way to fight Seath is just keep circling the whole fight. His curse spikes only come out directly in front of him, once you get around the side tentacles just get a couple hits in and then keep running as he rotates towards you.
>>
>>750606997
You play 1 for the levels and worldbuilding. You play 3 for the bosses and PvP. Both are great.

You play 2 to suffer through a janky PoS. You play Bloodborne to spam dodge like a spastic retard. You play Elden Ring to BE a spastic retard. You play Duskbloods to play Smash with souls combat.
>>
>>750611287
I actually figured that out, but his AOE attack fucks me over when I do that. Pisses me off so much too since I got him down to literally one hit on my third try, and now I'm stuck at square one again.
>>
>>750611050
Do you know what the word "objectively" means? In what world is Irythyll Dungeon better laid out than Sen's Fortress, or High Wall of Lothric better than Undead Burg?
Cathedral may loop back on itself nicely a few times, but that's probably the high point of the base game.
The DLC is just straight lines.

If youre right up in his nuts like tucked in that corner in his tentacle you shouldnt get hit by it. I play the original version though maybe its different on remaster
>>
>>750606997
Dark Souls really shouldn't have had any sequels none of them were able to capture what was so great about the first game.
>>
>>750611361
You can buy a few Purging Stones from the female undead merchant in the aqueduct, otherwise you'll have to go to New Londo to reverse it.
>>
>>750611449
Not him, but yes. Darkroom Garden is much better than Crucifixion Woods.
>>
>>750607958
3rdies actually play the game instead of shitposting and watching ecelebs play it
>>
>>750611406
High Wall is better than Undead Burg overall, so is Undead Settlement
>>
>>750611615
Depends if you're adding the second half of High Wall: if we're going entirely by which early game area is better, it's Burg.
Undead Settlement is...fine. For as large as it is, it funnels you quite hard.
>>
>>750611615
High Wall is is great and it's one of like two areas that Miyazaki actually directed in DS3, along with Cathedral of the Deep. Rest was mostly Taniumra. I really don't care for undead settlement.
>>
>>750611490
Bit of a hike since the firelink fire went out, is there a better path to get there from a warp fire?
>>
>>750611050
DS1fag here, that's objectively true
>>
>>750612007
>since the firelink fire went out
Go to the area before O&S boss room and use your black eye orb. The rest you should be able to figure out yourself.
>>
>>750611535
Irithyll > Anor Londo
Undead Settlement > Undead Berg
Grand Archives > Duke's Archives
Cathedral of the Deep > Undead Parish
Smoldering Lake > Demon Ruins

World design is not level design. DS1 mogs all in gameplay progression and world design, the isolated levels themselves are highly variable in quality
>>
>>750612090
DS1fag here, this guy is objectively wrong.
>>
>>750612883
>Irithyll > Anor Londo

>>
>>750613269
Better than anything in DS3
>>
>>750606997
It's because DS3 is kinda sickdark
>>
>>750608136
The fucked up thing about DS3's linearity is that Profaned Capital literally overlaps with the Catacombs but you can't enter it through them. Smoldering Lake also overlaps with Irithyll Dungeon, and you were originally going to enter the Catacombs through Undead Settlement. They could've improved the game so much if they did all this
>>
3 had some pretty ass level design and the plot was an absolute mess of half-baked ideas that were mostly dropped halfway through development. But it has what I consider the best bosses in the series. I've started whole playthroughs just because I wanted to fight the Abyss Watchers or Champion Gundyr again.
>>
>>750611050
I really like DS3, but aside from the village at the start of the game every level is either a series of hallways or a giant circle with a bunch of bullshit scattered around the edges. Even DS2's levels with their bullshit enemy placements are more interesting to navigate.

Maybe im the only one but i wish Depths in 1 was longer and built up bigger and bigger slimes and rats until you get to the decaying dragon boss. Like the size of blighttown or undead burg, instead of just being a couple hallways with some pitfalls that dont kill you
>>
>>750607871
>1 started the "prepare to...LE DIE!" stuff that normgroids latched onto
No, that's just where it hit critical mass. DeS is where it really started, you can see it in mainstream reviews and marketing but the real damage was early streamers who sucked at games.

>>750610631
Stay mad, secondary.
>>
>>750612883
Yeah, I'll agree with the sentiment. If DaS3 had a more coherent, thought-out world and didn't have such inferior art direction, it would probably beat DaS.
But DaS3 is linear, ugly, and I think the zones themselves lose a lot the second time around. I'm still happy to take my time going through each area in DaS, outside of Demon Ruins/ Izalith, but DaS3 has very few parts that you want to take your time clearing.
Instead of a quiet, dying world, you have a very hostile environment filled with enemies with spastic movesets, like the Ghru or the Corvians.
>>
>>750606997
I started on dark souls 1 and I can close my eyes and remember it to this day I haven't played it in like 11 years I barely remember 2 or 3 let that sink in.
>>
>>750615403
I enjoy the Depths for what it is: I see it as the preamble to Blighttown, more or less, and I love Blighttown.
>>
>>750611752
>High Wall is is great and it's one of like two areas that Miyazaki actually directed in DS3, along with Cathedral of the Deep.
>I like those areas therefore Miyazaki made them
>>
>>750606997
I like 1, but I was 10 when it came out, so I only got as far as Quelaag because I was a dumb kid, I got 3 when I was 16 and it was the first "hard game" that I beat so 3 lives in my mind as my favorite
>>
>>750615714
The first few areas of DaS2 are quite memorable: almost everything touching Majula leaves an impression.
>Heide's (then Wharf)
>Gutter/ Grave of Saints
>Copse
>Shaded Woods
Granted, some are kind of shit, but I still remember discovering Vengarl's head in Vanilla DaS2, and noting that everyone and their mother was wearing it while getting invaded in Belfry Luna on release week.
>>
>>750606997
Dark Souls 3 looks too grey and lifeless and the scenario design is significantly worse.
>>
the start of the game up to Irythyll is just so boring to me.
and even after, there isn't really much that grabs me, i just got this feeling that From was pretty tired of Dark Souls and was kind of phoning a lot of it in.
>>
>>750615746
Depths are one of the best in DS1
>>
>>750606997
I really like the Dark Souls 3 presentation on entropy and the death of the cycle. Obviously it was the focal point of Ds1, and the more subtle presentation in the original has its own charm. But Dark Souls 3 feels much more desperate. Actually seeing characters fight to preserve something so clearly beyond its expiration in contrast to Ds1 where maybe it was worth linking the fire appeals to me
>>
>>750615692
I don't think DS3 has inferior art direction, more that it didn't translate that well in the final game with really middling graphics and poor lighting. It's obvious that the world in DS3 was stitched together at the last minute so it all doesn't mesh very well. In isolation I think the art direction is great
>>
>>750607218
>3 is a straight line boss rush game
That's the only good thing about fromsoft games though, the world's and stories are all gay dark fantasy slop OH BUT MY FIRE I MUST HAVE THE FIRE and then nightmare it was all a dream bloodborne bullshit, sekiro is the only good one
>>
>>750617821
Thematically, DS3 is their finest game. Lothric is one of the best characters they've made and the whole conflict of the game of him being a cripple who can't link the fire and refuses to is brilliant. I'm quite tired of FromSoft coming up with amazing worlds and hardly ever exploring them in their games. No it's not super secret based "lore" it's just them cobbling the games together at the last minute then explaining any discrepancies with item descriptions that tell you about a plot you never see
>>
>>750606997
I maybe like DS1 more than DS3, but to be fair I would rather replay DS3 once again than DS1.
>>
the "muh difficulty" mindset is not what is the indicator of quality. people arent singing the praises of games like i wanna be the guy despite being hard. there is more to a games quality than the simple binary of "more deaths = good"
>>
>>750606997
both are fine, only fags like 2 though.
>>
>>750618267
if only we could have gotten a game that was the game design philosophy and world/map design of 1 with the combat gameplay of 3. maybe some crazy dude in this age of AI could make something like that. recreating the world of DS1 but accomodated for larger space for the newer games playstyle.

>>750607680
Every single boss in ds3 is trivialized by rolling straight into their crotch with your base 6-7 rolls in a row with zero stamina investment. DS3 is so fucking braindead on my first playthrough I died to bosses 3 times. 1 to pontiff and 2 to nameless king. Every other boss was first try.
>>
>>750619129
>Every single boss in ds3 is trivialized by rolling straight into their crotch
every souls game is like this, as a matter of fact. its still the meta in games like DS1 and even DeS. idk why people peddle this revisionism
>>
>>750619338
Other souls games don't give you infinite stamina so you can always guarantee spam roll.
>>
>>750619405
yes you can because bosses have combos that barely last longer than 3 hits that are slow as fuck and you just GCS and FaP ring and you can roll around more than enough to dodge every attack, even with a heavy weapon. its how i played the games back in the day before i knew any kind of meta. just dodging made the most sense.
>>
>>750606997
Most of the locations aren't memorable.
>>
>>750620029
Set a timer for 30 seconds
Spam roll and count rolls
When stamina fully depletes wait for stamina to completely refill then repeat spam roll
Report back the roll count for a base character of each game.

Dark Souls 1 is a classic and Dark Souls 2 is the hardest and the best
Dark Souls 3 is leftovers from Bloodborne, linear and very dry and lame edgy
>>
>>750618757
nonsense
>>
1 started the series, has more originality in terms of story and world elements

that said I prefer 3, it has a fuller and more satisfying narrative when combined with the DLC, though the bosses in the base game are definitely some gimmicky shit half the time
>>
DaS3 is a good game
Just for 1 single run. There's nothing else to be said about it, it is the most linear and the lamest "story" out of the three (the most made shit up out of the i made shit up trilogy in games)

>>
>>750620154
yes you stupid faggot, i am not saying your stamina bar isnt more lenient in the latter games, but that is because, retard, the combat is a lot faster, hectic and more moves per second than DS1 and DeS. proportional and relative to the games, rolling is just as viable in DeS and DS1. that was my entire point, dumbass.

Catacombs, fuck the catacombs. the catacombs were the must subhuman Miyazaki decision ever, that man tilted me like no other with just a simple dungeon crawling sequence. Miyazaki just went "tomb of horrors, that's child's play. let's make a dungeon only Gary Gygax would call a "fun challenge" in video game format."
>>
Fact: The time and manpower that went into making DS3 would have been better served making Bloodborne and Sekiro better, more complete games.
>>
>>750626190
or just making Bloodborne 2.0
>>
I wouldn't know, I played DS1 and found it a charming and unique game, then I played DS2 and it felt like more of the same and kinda crappy so I couldn't even finish it, didn't get around to DS3 after not caring that much about DS2.

Tried again with Elden Ring and I also didn't finish, way too much slop sidecontent and way too big a map for no reason.
>>
>>750626190
If DS2 hadn't come out as the unfocused piece of shit it was, there would've been no need for Myaz to make a DS3.
>>
>>750626190
dark souls would have been a great trilogy if the sequels took great risks and shifts in gameplay similar to darkest dungeon 2 compared to 1. i would have loved in DS2 was essentially bloodborne and DS3 was essentially elden ring. now THAT would have been an amazing trilogy of all unique, novel and forward pushing games (somewhat, since elden ring is kind of just dark souls but open world anyway).
>>
>>750606997
because it irreparably changed the series from a action-adventure rpg to a mediocre action "rpg"
>>
>>750626786
>dark souls would have been a great trilogy if the sequels took great risks and shifts in gameplay similar to darkest dungeon 2 compared to 1
DD2 wasn't a shift in gameplay, it was a completely different, and worse, game.
>>
>>750626786
That would've meant taking way more time to develop both, which is clear Bandai wouldn't allow. DS2's structure is basically proto-ER already, but there's no way they could've made the whole "explore kingdoms in open world" thing in the little time they had.
>>
>>750626973
i think it was great and never understood the hate, honestly. i thought it was all meat and potatoes without the fluff of the first game
>>
>>750627012
it was hated because self-proclaimed dark souls "experts" got humbled after they couldn't immediately cheese it like they could do with the first game after playing it for hundreds of hours
>>
>>750627005
bloodborne only came out a year after DS2 so that could have totally been DS2 and elden ring came out way later in 2022, but that being DS3 would have been an amazing capstone on the trilogy, in my opinion. i just find actual DS2 and DS3 to be really poor in execution both quality wise and innovation wise. i felt like DS1 was an interesting innovative evolution on DeS's foundation and I much more value sequels in a series to take bigger risks and drastically change gameplay rather than stay mostly the same and or worse or less innovative. DS2 took some risks with horrible execution and DS3 took no risks and is just a flaccid experience.
>>
>>750626786
DS2 is quite different mechanically and story wise to 1 and the playerbase did not like it, thats why 3 just a greatest hits collection while having the most unified and boring gameplay in the series
>>
>>750627065
i was talking about darkest dungeon 2 in that reply, anon. dark souls 2 sucks cock, if thats the game you thought i was talking about.
>>
>>750627092
but imagine if dark souls 2 was basically bloodborne instead (just in the dark souls world and with dark souls worldbuilding) i think people would have loved that game, same as they love bloodborne now. i remember when there was only dark souls 1 and i remember thinking to myself that i could imagine a sequel could go literally any direction and be drastically different. i celebrated that avant garde mindset. i was just dreaming too much though and they made a low quality cashgrab with both DS2 and 3, in my opinion.
>>
>>750627169
Dark Souls works because of its lore, mainly and full immersion style of game design. Bloodborne wouldn't fit in Souls lore its too high-powered.
>>
>>750627264
>Bloodborne wouldn't fit in Souls lore its too high-powered
hmm, what do you mean exactly? like the way the player characters move and the way the bosses are pretty cosmic and large? in my suggestion here, i would obviously re-tool the lore of bloodborne to fit with the lore of dark souls. dark souls 2 and 3 already get quite bombastic and large scale in terms of power-scaling, if thats what you mean?
>>
>>750627084
Yes that's what I mean, to make DS2 into Bloodborne it would take longer to release this game, and Bandai would've never allowed it.
>>
>>750627354
its just too anime-high fantasy where as dark souls is survival horror fantasy.
>>
>>750627169
Delusional, you can ask for things to be different or you can ask for more of the same. Hindsight is 20-20 but 2 tried to be really different, got stuck in development hell, got patched up and then shipped, but even the differneces that stayed were enough to cause a lot of backlash. Risks and changes dont always work out how you expect them to and thats just life.
Also if 2 was BB it would have been devicive, not being ties to the main series is a strenght not a weakness, since people were not going into BB expecting DS2 or 3
>>
>>750606997
Dark Souls 3 lacks contrast, and no, I'm not talking about the colours. Every area is that kind of grimdark kegare type.

Demon's Souls wasn't hard. Just punishing when a lot of the games at the time were too handholdy to say the least. Exploration, observation, skill and resource management were needed to succeed instead of being optional. You had infinite grasses, etc.
Dark Souls 1 had some moments but nothing crazy. Then the DLC came and the Anime bullshit started with Artorias Manus and the Sanctuary guardian and they never looked back. In DS3 Iudex Gundyr was MANDATORY to start the actual game and he alone is harder than all of DS1 bosses except Manus and that's a Maybe. Elden Ring is the Hardest one by far while also being the easiest if you use every tool they give you. Peak difficulty slider design imho. Baby mode 2 summons with spirit ashes overleveled and overgeared af and hardcore mode lvl 1 wretch naked with a club. Sekiro is peak because summonfags get fucked if you don't git gud you will not finish the game. You can't overleveled, you can't overgear. You improve and succeed or you don't and you ragequit. I think Sekiro is the one From game with the least amount of player beating the final boss iirc.
>>
>>750606997
DS3 has the best bosses and best OST.
DS3 is only "harder" because they nerfed shields and poise so you cant just draintank everything while chugging estus through boss attacks, you actually have to learn and engage with the bosses attack patterns.
>>
Sekiro is the greatest video game ever made.
>>
>>750617821
The Dreg Heap where you can actually see the entire world imploding and eating itself up really conveys how fucked things are. It's a world beyond saving, seeing the remnants of the Firelink shrine in the Demon princes Arena. Hell even the Lord Of Cinder fight tells you straight up, that everyone that linked the flame including Gwyn just delayed the inevitable. And even if you do link the flame it's a weak fire, nothing that compares to the explosion of DS1 where you see the pillars of stone melted in the Kiln of the first flame.
>>
>>750620154
Well in DS1 poise actually mattered so you could literally bonk every boss to death without even moving and chug on their face if you had the right gear. Bosses were slower too.

i just demolished demon's souls for the first time yesterday evening. you have so many options for building your character that as long as you use your brain with your gear and leveling up, you should be able to find a playstyle that carries you through the game. after those gay ass maneaters on the narrow ledge i just started poisoning anyone who was causing me too much trouble. the hardest part is after you finish the game when they immediately make you rush all the way through the first boss while carrying +150,000 souls before you can level up and offload them.

None of the Souls games are hard. Play real games.

Difficulty isn't everything. Bloodborne is so much better than DaS3 but it's undeniably easier.
>>
1 has better world design while 3 is a tube run and not in the good way like Demon's Souls' level centric design. 1 also has that DeS energy where every boss needs you to figure out a way to approach the fight while in 3 every boss is "simon says roll".

>>PTDE - 90%
>>DSR - 91%
Ignoring the fact that you're using a retarded metric to gauge general sentiment, the PC ports of DaS1 suffer from being either turbo dogshit or having mutilated lighting. Neither is playable without mods and thus warrant a lower score than they otherwise deserve.

>retarded metric
As opposed to no metric.

Elden mid holds that title

A misleading metric is worse than no metric at all. The general sentiment is that 1 is better than 3.

The interconnected areas in DS1 are nice, but they really do have an issue of making the world feel incredibly small since pretty much every major landmark needs to be in walking distance of each other. DS3 at least has the excuse of the world literally collapsing in on itself, and most of the areas are wider than the narrow pathways of the older games.
>>
Sorry, I don't buy the bosses excuse, they are all the fucking same. DLC ups the ante by forcing you to use your brain or at least your patience, but they're a complete breeze with a half-decent DEX or STR build.
The only possible saving grace of this idiotic i-frame centric combat is making every enemy have attack delays, and guess what, people see it as a design flaw/forced difficulty.
>noo not the press O to roll gameplay
>what do you mean i cant spam roll anymore :(
^your brain on video essays.

>there's a giant archer you can befriend and he helps or hinders you in areas near a white birch tree
>there's a bridge you can destroy to kill a whole bunch of skeletons that are after you, and it turns into a bridge
>you can bait skeletons and a mimic into killing a demon
>there's a giant crossbow, you can use it to break open a shortcut, reveal an item, and kill a worm
>there's enemies that reduce your max hp, but you can distract them with throwing knives, use a ring that silences your footsteps, a branch that transforms you into an object and spells that let you sneak past and get the drop on them
>there's a dangerous enemy you can run past though a magic barrier, but it'll jump down and attack you later
>a giant boss you need to destroy fragile weak spots on its body
>a boss that generates many weak clones, which clever players can kill with throwing knives
>a boss that's fighting itself
>a boss that travels from one mob to another mob in a crowd
>a boss you can kick the shield and guardbreak
>a boss you need to break 3 bracelets to win, or you can also beat normally
>a boss you need to plunging attack to win, or you can also beat normally
>a spellcaster boss which is helpless if you mute with a miracle
>a boss you beat with a special weapon art, and if you free an NPC he'll use the weapon art with you
>a boss that is on the back of another boss, so you are rewarded for hitting the rear
Wtf DS3 had more creative levels and bosses than DS2...

>a boss that's fighting itself
We all are...
>a boss you need to plunging attack to win, or you can also beat normally
The soapstones that lead you to the elevation are so fucking bizarre, the entire level is a straight line and they still felt the need to hold your hand.
