Do I need to play Dark Cloud 1 first?
>>
>>750607018
No, they aren't connected in any meaningful way.
>>
How are Rogue Galaxy and White Knight Chronicles? I've seen both often compared as a sort-of Dark Cloud 3. I never played either.
>>750607018
No. I go back and forth on which one I like more.

>>750606760
character swap slop
>>
>>750606760
It was neat and had a lot of ambition, sad they overcomplicated the city building though. If they wanted there to be so much customization then they shouldn't have made it such a pain to get resources.
Both Dark Cloud games have the issue of just being 'ok' at their main gameplay but they were good at instilling a feeling of adventure and they had all sorts of extra stuff to mess around with.
Weird to think the closest modern equivalent would be the Yakuza series
>>
>>750606760
Im sad that the custom city building stuff never really took off. I am a weirdo who loves balance valley

No it's not. It gets rated fairly highly on a consistent basis. Solid 8/10 game.

The first one has dark clouds
And the second is supposed to be 'Dark Chronicle' depending on the market, but there's not exactly one of those on the cover either
>>
>>750607604
Rogue Galaxy made me realize jarpigs need an X-factor to kerp me hooked.
>>
>>750607018
in japanese it's just called dark chronicle
amerimutts changed it to dark cloud 2 to bait people into buying the other game too

i'm still mad at how worthless the monster transformation is, despite it being way grindier than any other character advancement in the game

dark cloud 2 is pretty niche but it absolutely gets tons of love
>>
>>750606760
Just pray it stays niche so Level 5 isn't tempted to make an AI remake of it.
>>
>>750606760
I played dark could 1. Thought it was okay but not terribly impressed. But have been tempted to try it again or 2 now that I’m less retarded.
Weapon durability felt really annoying. To be trying to clear a level and only having one or two monsters left but not having the durability
>>
>>750614101
isn't there a mod/hacked version of the game that fixed monster transformation or was that a dream
>>
Despite 2 feeling like it has 20x the production value, I still prefer 1's gameplay loop and "feel" despite it being clunkier. Having multiple party members was cool, even though some of them get perma benched it was preferable to only having 2 for the entire adventure.
>>
I remember playing it earlier this year and was blown away by the first couple hours (I played it when it was new way back when and forgot a lot of it).

I stopped after a bit because I'm a completionlist and there was just so much shit to do. Like playing golf in the levels? Jesus.

>forget to get auto repair powder

>>750607018
Dont lol
>>
>>750606760
Should I emulate it? I played it long ago but I cannot remember much of it. I did not beat it but it seemed like a fun interesting game from my vague memory of it.
>>
>>750614656
DC2 fixed the durability. It is made less annoying and upgrading your weapons makes the DP(Durability Points) drain slower each hit. Late game you don't have to worry about repairing weapons anymore. Best part if your weapons break, they are not gone for good, you won't do any damage to enemies till you repair it. Both characters have 2 weapons on them which 1 is for close range and the other for long range.
>>
>>750606760
I played this and my cousin deleted my save. I was up to the volcano area. I never replayed it. I even did the golf minigame on every stage

>Most underrated PlayStation game of all time
It's definitely not. It could have been the best of them, but no game this obnoxiously repetitive and lacking in actual handcrafted design deserves that title.
>>
>>750616094
Drain a lake and ask claude to decompile and mod the game.
>>
>>750606760
I love the game, but I don't know why I keep dropping it when I reach the final area Lunar something something.

God I love fishing and breeding them for races and fights.
>>
>>750606760
I played DS2 after hearing for years about how it's so much better than DS1 in every possible way and, color me surprised, it was worse in almost every way other than the combat.
The sudden voice acting is awful, the story got too kiddified, the villain is completely unremarkable, and the actual good stuff from these games (which is building towns) got turned into a chore.
I guess 20 years of hearing that DS2 > DS1 raised my expectations to a ridiculous degree.
>>
>>750618376
>DS
Meant DC, lmao.
>>
niggas will post "most underrated game of all time" and its the game that appears in every youtube video on retro games ever made
>>
>>750607604
>White Knight Chronicles
Abysmal. Unironically one of the worst jrpgs I've ever played
>>
>>750607604
Rogue Galaxy is alright, later combat gets pretty boring because of the abundance of screen clearing cinematic moves. White Knight chronicles I haven't played much so I can't really say, it's more of an offline MMO than anything though. I imagine it was fun when online was active though
>>
>>750618405
alternate timeline where dark cloud was super successful and they started calling it buildslop
>>
I liked spheda.
>>
>>750607018
No but you should, they're both very very good games, but I personally like the first more
>>
>>750606760
I never cared for 1. Didnt play 2. Hows the gameplay change from the first?
>>
>>750607018
no, but you should. It's a unique experience
>>
>>750620537
It was a good minigame. Except in balance valley. Fuck that place.
>>
>>750621446
It's pretty funny that the area it is first introduced in is the one it is most annoying in.
>>
>>750618376
maybe. i played DC2 when it released and I had previously played DC1 and significantly prefer DC2.
>>
>>750621156
Max is a combo of Toan and Osmond, Monica is a combo of Toan and Ruby. They both have a melee weapon and a ranged attack. There's no more weapon breaking, Thirst is now a status ailment rather than a bar you need to manage, Max gets a mech and Monica can transform into monsters, you can invent things by taking pictures, there's a more robust city building system but you need to grind for materials, you can recruit villagers, etc.
>>
>>750621850
>you can recruit villagers
I completely forgot that you technically had a "third" party member that was a villager but all they did was give you a passive ability. Cute concept but terribly dull in execution. Having all your niggas on the train was kind of neat.
>>
>>750622247
some are great as they give good bonuses. really easy money trick early game is recruiting ed and using his skill to make improved bombs to sell them.
>>
>>750622298
Yep I remember that and I'm also now remembering that if you wanted to minmax your gear, you needed a specific villager on your team. One for Max's melee weapons, One for his gun (I think it was his dad), One for Monica's melee and One for Monica's ranged. They gave you like a 10% increase to stats every time your weapon leveled up. And Monica's ranged weapon tutor can only be used for a limited time before she's permabricked for story reasons. Fucking BULLSHIT
>>
I love Monica, she is so cute and dependable.
>>
>>750616542

I can get that, I prefer DC2 overall but it does have a lot of side bullshit going on. You don't have to 100% engage in them but you feel like you're missing out on a bunch of rewards if you don't. It is very funny to me the game even has bullshit like fish racing. They absolutely just threw everything they could in.
DC1 is just "go to dungeon, kill shit, grind, fish if you want, repeat" and it's very good at doing that and it's refreshing in that it doesn't really waste too much time getting into those loops. Helps that DC1 ran at 60FPS for the time whereas DC2 ran at 30FPS, so DC2 felt a bit more sluggish imo
>>
i remember whacking it to that slutty circus girl in the beginning. then i talked to her later and she said it was a side gig or something and she sold weapons for a living iirc. sick.
>>
>>750606760
It's like the highest rated lmao.
Which doesn't make it overrated. It's good. Lot of completely undeveloped mechanics but that goes for both quests. Never seen a game fuck up fishing as much as the Dark Cloud series.

>>750607018
I played both for the first time recently and honestly Dark Cloud 1 is a little better, IMO. Dark Cloud 2 switches the balancing up to heavily prefer melee, and has a lot of general mapgen improvements - the most powerful thing in Dark Cloud 1 is a 4 foot catgirl with a slingshot that may as well be a fucking M4A1 which just rips through the game.
But a character specific fast-forward button solves a lot of the pacing problems that era of jrpgs tended to have.
>>
>>750622391
>>750622298
>>750622247
That's nothing. Once you recruit Mayor Sneed, he gives you name change tickets, that essentially give you unlimited access to any endgame weapon of your choice. Minmaxing essentially stops being an issue after that.
>>
>>750623663
it's not really unlimited when it costs medals which are limited. And they're useable for costumes instead, and personally I think it's more important to get a bikini for monica than easy end game weapons.
>>
>>750606760
I just really dislike the art style of the second game and think the atmosphere of 1 is much better
>>
>>750620537
I like the idea of it but boy are the dungeons not actually designed for it
>>
TITANS, GO!
>>
>>750624408
It's really not that bad overall. Generally you get 1 shot for every corner you have to turn, occasionally getting a little more if it's really far or occasionally less. So all you have to do is learn how to hit the ball to land it in the hallway corner without it rolling away from you and you can beat it pretty reliably.
Balance valley is the main one that sucks because the stages require much longer shots which makes it much harder to stop the ball from rolling into the pit. The mines can be tricky too since even though it doesn't have pitfalls it likes to give you 1 less shot than you should need so you do have to try and cut corners sometimes.
>>
>>750624408
I found a good way to make it easier is to have half backspin when hitting so it stops right where it lands. I also only ever used the starter club.
>>
>>750624319
I agree with this, i think 1 is the better game. 2 has much better gameplay though and that's like 90% of the game
>>
>>750607604
White Knight Chronicles is dogshit through and through. Everyone was lied to by the trailers. In the game they literally cock tease you with "Princess is in another castle" bullshit for not one but two games then by the second game the princess ends up being a megabitch.

Rogue Galaxy starts cool but limps towards the end after a 20 hour massive fetchquest with no plot.
>>
>>750610978
That's why Dark Chronicle is the superior title.
>>
>>750606760
I thought it started really strong, but by the end just kinda eh
The beach was the peak of the game then it goes down slowly from there. The last area not having an actual city to build + the cool locomotive being replace with a shitty looking futuristic train kills it for me.
>>
>>750627647
Putting the garden together from abstract instructions was quite the filter.
>>
a fucking rabbit
>>
The end of both games is bad, i don't want to build a robot or a garden. I will climb 100 levels to fight my (alleged) dad
>>
>>750627759
My problem was following the photos was boring. I had fun making the towns in my own way, suddenly being railroaded sucks.
>>
>>750606760
Now that it got recomped, I hope it gets modded so that monster transformation isn't complete ass anymore.
>>
>>750617182
If you're going to look up guides/walkthroughs, don't bother. Half of the fun is just fucking around and trying to figure shit out by taking pictures and crafting.

Dark Cloud 2 on rails is pointless. It's a grindy game too. If you want all crafted weapons/monster transformations you've got 200 hours of work ahead of you. I mean in this day and age, we have thousands of games to pick from so grinding isn't as appealing as 2003 when you paid $49.99 for a new game and had to rely on it to entertain you for maybe six months or a year. Which DC2 could do.

I would say if you missed in in the PS2 era, there's no real reason to play it now, especially if you spoil it first. Newer games do what DC2 did but better.

I really need more RPGs with town building elements
Preferably town building elements with some depth
