This one's gonna be a bit different this time around, because unlike our other entries, the darkness within this game is an entirely different beast. The past dark moments in gaming were focused on horror, dread, and raw, primal fear. Don't get me wrong, DOOM 3 has plenty of those things, as it's basically a horror game set in DOOM's universe, with stuff like gore, demons, and loads of disturbing imagery. That being said, this game's darkness is not just figurative, but also incredibly literal. Seriously, take a look at the screenshot I grabbed online, you can barely see anything, outside of what the flashlight is pointing at! It's like when a storm kills your electricity and you have to feel around the house just to go to the bathroom! I know this all done just to show off the game's dynamic lighting engine, but guess what, you only appreciate for like, 2 seconds, and then after that, it becomes more of an annoyance than anything, especially since you can't hold a gun and the flashlight at the same time! It's easy to see why Half-life 2 just completely embarrassed it all day every day, because that game's main selling point is physics, and wouldn't you know it, throwing around a bunch of objects and using your environment as a weapon is fun. Having to constantly rotate between your light source and your weapons, is not fun, at all, especially when the demons hit like trucks, and your guns hit like spitballs! Let this be the only entry where the darkness is one that is physical, and not metaphorical, because THE WHOLE GAME IS A DARK MOMENT!
