I'm looking to buy a handheld gaming PC, preferably under $1000. What's the best option?
>>750596054No idea
>>750596054Get the 'eck, don't be a loser.
Depends what you want to play.Deck will probably be supported for at least another 3 years (2030 was the earlier track for steam deck 2), and most companies that DO aim for mobile compat are using deck as the template. For good reason, most of the other devices of that generation are similarly powered.I'd recommend the ROG Ally (Z1Extreme version). It should be VERY cheap for a simple reason: It obliterated SD cards. It still does so don't believe anyone saying it was "Fixed". But if you're okay not using SD cards for expanded storage (you can easily replace the SSD still, same as on a deck), you're fine, and it's far and away the cheapest device and has similar power to the deck off charge, and on charger slightly surpasses it.It doesn't have the usb-c PD for external GPUs the later models do (it uses a proprietary eGPU plug that they supported with like 3 different GPUs which they stopped selling after a couple months, and a promise enclosure you could load your own gpu into that they never pushed to market). But it's got a top tier VRR screen, runs windows (Also runs the steamOS image perfectly), okay speakers, and a nice little fingerprint sensor up, which I prefer to the deck pin system, but that's really nitpicky.I love my sdeck OLED but all decks are up in price, the ally is just a great machine you can get for cheap cause they had to RUSH to release a revision that didn't cost them millions in replacement hardware and accessories lmao. Those ones you have listed are really the only ones you're gonna find for under 1k nowadays. You may be able to find an ally X for under 1k, but it's a really marginal improvement (8gb more ram, no change to chipset or anything else really).Go for the original ally, Z1 Extreme. $350 on ebay and you'll be able to play anything the deck can, at similar speeds.
>>750597414oh yeah the ally X does have a larger battery, if you're really concerned about battery life (all the handheld devices last like 4h tops playing anything remotely demanding, even with 80wh battery).
>>750596626Even if you want to run Steam OS, the Deck is nowhere near worth its current asking price. It's the worst possible choice right now.I'd say Lenovo Legion S (z1 extreme or z2) or what >>750597414 said.
>>750596054>I'm looking to buy a handheld gaming PC
>>750596054Lenovo T480
>>750596054>He didn't buy a steam deck while they were practically giving them away to drive up interest You missed the boat, anon
>>750597508>I'd say Lenovo Legion S (z1 extreme or z2)Z2 in the Go S afaik is the shit variant, not the Extreme variant the Rog Ally X uses, so avoid.Get the Legion Go S Z1 Extreme.
something with the intel arc b390
Refurbished OLED deck is the best option, MSRP is a ripoff.Xbox Ally X is the only still $1000 dollars, Lenovo Legion Go has shit battery. All of these handhelds are underpowered compared to those with the Intel arc g3.
>>750596054Want to give 100% of proceedings to Gabe, with two touchpads and official SteamOS support from Valve but underpowered hardware? Get the Deck.Want to get a powerful handheld with SteamOS out of the box and also supported by Valve, but with one touch pad? Get a Lenovo Legion Go S.Want to get a powerful handheld with Windows 11 and supported by Microsoft? Get an Asus Xbox Rog Ally X.Ignore every other model until Lenovo or Asus release new hardware with either official SteamOS or Xbox support.
>>750596054You missed the window of opportunity. Best bet is a steam deck, but the 1st Legion Go was pretty great, but is no longer available. Snagged both for like $600 a peice.
>>750596054>all these steamies shilling an underpowered and overpriced devicemay as well be nintendo fans at that point holy shit
>>750599209A fan of a company that treats its customers as scum, no thanks.
>>750596054Legion Go is way too clunky. At that point, just buy a tablet and a controllerSteam Deck or Rog Ally are good choices. Steam Deck is probably not going to be available new for a long time, unless they aren't sold out in your region, but it is overall the better experience. Rog Ally is really good also.Price between them is irrelevant really, ~$100 plus or minus is nothing
>>750599304are you talking about nintendo or valve? im confused as that sentence could apply to either
>>750596054I'll never understand 'ecks and alike. Is playing in bed from time to time really worth buying basically a second pc for? Just use remote play or w/e
I got a used ROG Ally this time last year for £200. I use it as my main PC - I'm using it right now, docked in a docking station. I love this little thing. I've got Linux on mine and I think it's only going to get better with that new "Lite" version of FSR4.
>>750599616>Just use remote playOh yeah, i love waiting a quarter of a second before any button i press takes effect even when both client and host are in the same network.
>>750596054I have 7inches you can buy for 100 dollars anon
>>750599852ASUS fucking it up so royally was really a joy for me, I returned mine like 3 times cause the SD reader kept burning out, ended up with 9 months of game pass ultimate, and then ended up getting a refund on the thing after, then bought a used one a month later for $200 usd, still use it to this day.Windows though cause I'm not a homo.
>>750599616what if I want to play pc on the train?
>>750596054Either get a second hand first gen legion go or Rog Ally and get a battery upgrade for them. Steam Decks are in high demand right now and not worth it and the legion go and Ally have better performance
>>750596054Whatever you can find used locally. Plenty of remorseful buyers trying to offload them.
>>750596054Get a time machne.
>>750599958>t.
>>750602382You just sit there and don't refund shit when it's broken? That sounds like something cattle would say.
>>750602467No, it was your windows comment because you're brown lol.
>>750596054They're all pretty underpowered at this point. It's a really bad time to buy hardware.
